New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • Hiya,

I had an issue on my latest runs which saw my distance and thus splits were way off

Upon inspection of the map, (post run) it showed the 'line' was exceptionally squiggly - as though the watch thought I was running in a very, very non-straight line (this was not the case, I was taking part in a speed session last night using a straight road for intervals)

I was surprised to see I had run 7miles, when actually it's more like 4! Comparison against other runners in the same session further highlighted the discrepancies.

Is there something I can do to aid calibration and improve accuracy for my next run?

    Thanks

  • So I think the general conclusion for AW1 users is this is a step backwards. However if you switch over to Runkeeper they have a great AW & App combo and if you use Tapiriik you can sync acrosss to Strava and it works very well - splits seem a bit out is all. I am sure Strava will re-connect the watch and app for those that want it (Runkeeper does this so please note Strava) but as with all software changes it will take time. If Strava post an update to say the disconnection was a mistake and it will be fixed it would immediatly stop the winging (me included!)

  • It just feels like there needs to be different apps or modes of one app for different purposes. Exploring on my mountain bike and laps while running make me want to use different sets of features and interaction.

  • Hi,

I found this new update excellent for running without my phone.  However whilst cycling I carry my phone on the handlebars and use it as my main display for speed/cadence etc.  I now seem unable to use both my phone and watch.  If I start the recording on my watch it gather HR data but no display on my phone and no speed/cadence.  If I start the workout on my phone then I get the display I want but it wont record the HR from my watch?  As hinted at in other posts there needs to be a way to tether your watch to your phone if required.

    Thanks

    Alan

  • Please bring back the ability to start recording from the iOS phone app, and then use the Apple Watch 1 as the HR monitor & a tethered screen for real time stats. Everything was fine with version 5.12. It's not common a product would break existing functionality without any warnings. Unless there's any workarounds, the watch app is currently useless to me.

    On version 5.12, I could:
    1. Start recording from iOS phone app
    2. the WatchOS App would automatically start recording too, and show real time data like pace + distance, as well as record my heart rate during a ride.
    3. I can stop the ride on either my watch or my phone, all the data is compiled into a single ride.

    Since version 5.13:
The phone and watch app no longer talks to each other until the end of a ride, this means it no longer records my heart rate unless I kick off the recording with my apple watch.

However, if I record with my apple watch 1, since there's no GPS signal, the pace and distance on the watch is practically useless, it will only try and somehow calculate everything after I finish recording on my watch and wait for it to sync to my phone app.

  • Today I am a very happy camper. I was trawling through my laptop backups and found an old version of the ipa. I'm now once again the happy user of version 5.10.0. Oh the joy of regaining that functionality. To the strava devs (and managers making the stupid decisions), you'll make a lot of people happy if you allow them to "dual screen" their watches and phones.

Note that I create backups using an app called "SupaDupa" which results in bootable usb disks - a must have. I'm not sure whether the time machine backups will be as helpful to others, but if you have regular backups, you might have an old copy of the app.

  • I agree with another user; this update makes the app useless for gen 1 Apple Watch. I used to start the app on the phone, put it in my pocket then use the app on my watch during my workout so I'd get heart rate info. Then I'd stop the workout on my phone so I could switch it to a hike; my main type of workout. Incidentally, this isn't even an option on the watch to choose a hike... another suck thing but overcome by being able to change it when I stopped the workout on the phone. Please restore the ability to use the watch tethered to the phone app. It's useless to me as it is now. I was just starting to enjoy Strava, now I'll just use the Apple Watch built in workout app.

  • A month since release and no movement on the open issues. With no Km audio and no live segment working i do not see the point in paying the premium subscription anymore. I came from Runkeeper and looks like i will be going back, its a real shame as i loved Strava for those features.

  • My first experiences are pretty mediocre. The start button doesn't react for the first ten pushes. Was the GPS Signal to weak for starting a run?

  • Good to have finaly the update but many issues....

I done two rides and never get any heart rate information.

Wonder if all this is as well as bad in the Android Gear version?

  • Hi, thanks for the update.

I had the pleasure to Run and bike with my AW2.

It's does the recording job even if the precision can be discussed. (but t's more a hardware problem I think as I'm not sure that the GPS from the watch is as precise as on a Garmin one). I did not yet tested it in mountain, under forest, where signal could be lost, weak or whatsoever conditions affecting the signal.

To make the application quit more usefule / Friendly,  it would be nice if we could customize the screen depending on what we want to follow while running / Biking.

It would be nice if we could set up time lap previously, ( Distance / time) or by touching the screen.

Also it could be nice if for exemple we could set up a training session (interval training...) within strava application on the IPHONE / Computer and synchronize it with the AW2.

It will be funny to have our Ghost to follow (Using segment for exemple).

It will be nice to have a screen with which we could have a see to the track just to check where we are from the beginning even without map, just to give an indication of our position from our start point.

Having some activity statistics within the watch.

    That's all for the moment....

I hope that a mix of all the  feedback from the forum will be useful to update the application in the way to place STRAVA as a reference !

    Keep going guys !

  • I just started and stopped, then saved a ride on the Apple Watch 2 Strava app and it didn't sync to my feed -- just went to a blackhole. That sucks.

  • Hi Strava, Dev guys and other users!

I really like to see where this is going. I recently switched from the nice Apple Watch 2 Workout App to the terrible NRC App and now to your Strava App.

I really liked the Workout App but missed the nice statistics and overviews. Nike is not really able to create a reliable AW2 App and the NRC iPhone App is far from usable.

Your iPhone App is the best I could find. The Watch App is much more reliable than the others.

I'd wish to see some improvements for the future.

    - Customizable Watch faces (pace, distance, etc)
    - an option to lock the App on my watch (rain, water, sweat)
    - Taptic info on custom splits (200m, 400m, 500m, 1km..) so i don't always need to check the watch by myself
    - audio feedback would be great as well

And I recognized that my first km isn't always tracked correctly. I pass the first km in 5 minutes, strava shows a recent pace of 4:29min/km. I think this is because it takes a while to get a good gps signal. The apple workout App is able to track it directly from the start. But this could be because of a weak gps signal at my location, too. The next kms are track perfectly fine.

  • This update sux no average speed on Apple Watch series one and two. This must be reintroduced and in a hurry. Secondly uploads take hours now to the app. Why have you ruined this app? I'm a premium user too

  • I don't have a Series 2 watch, and I don't like the loss of the audio cues.

With this update, you're telling me I have to go back to only using the iPhone app only, not the watch version if I want audio cues? Fumbling to get my phone out of my belt when I need to pause is a pain. This is NOT an improvement.

  • I would be grateful if

A lap function can be added - like in the activity app - for example with a double Tap

    The average pace

A display always on function. for example as a competition mode

  • Well, the Garmin of my wife says 18,3 km and AW2 with Strava says 19,8 km. We ran the same way together.

This difference is not acceptable. I will keep on testing

  • I've used the watch version twice now.  First time, it worked like a charm.  But today, all appeared well, but the activity itself seemed to disappear from the watch and the phone with no upload to Strava site.  I see the exercise and steps and activity level in the iOS activity app, but no recorded workout activity anywhere.

  • Thanks for the update. Would like to add my vote for having option to keep AW tethered to iPhone. I really like being able to use the AW alone for runs but like using my iPhone with AW as 2nd display for rides due to better battery life. Also would love to add watch face complication, thanks!

  • What a fail for biking. I agree with all the guys, that commented here that used to start their strava workouts from the watch app. I tried to do this and couldn't believe there's no way to start a recording on the phone from the watch anymore (using the Watch, i got a series 2, as a HR monitor).

Also the tracking and auto-pause on the watch recording is way to insensitive, i ended up with a 2,5 hr MTB ride with a 700m climb that only recorded 57 minutes or so.

I don't know who did the standalone Watch app refresh design, but it was nobody that likes to ride bikes.

  • Hi there,

I have found that my pace is unaccurately showing faster than previous release. It seems like it's due to GPS issues?

I run in intervals and have no way of having my Apple Watch work with Strava and any other interval app. Would love to have built in intervals please!

  • Thank you for keeping the dark display motif!!

Really surprised it's missing a few basic things. Like the ability for a split/lap function, and swim as a sport. AW2 is waterproof and touted as great for swimming, but I guess if you want to do a triathlon with Strava, you'll just have to start it after your swim leg. SMH.

Without something as simple as a lap function, this is completely useless for any runner other than a hobby jogger. My Timex from 1990 has a split/lap function, My 6 year old Garmin has a split/lap function, and Apple's native workout app has a split/lap option as well as current and average pace displayed.

I'm not a coder, but I have to assume these are fairly rudimentary things to be included in a workout app.

  • Elle,

I really like the new watch app, but I've found the GPS recording to be terribly inaccurate. For example, yesterday I ran a 10 mile race, but Strava said I ran 11.5 miles!! I checked the map, and it seemed spot on until I zoomed in closely and it looked like I was zigzagging all over the place on the street. It's as if it's taking too many GPS snapshots and it's not smoothing them out enough. I don't think I ever had this much of an issue when I was using the phone for GPS.

Any work coming on fixing this? Thanks!

  • Hi,

I have used the app numerous times now while running with friends using garmins. The app consistently records longer and faster than it should. Not by marginal amounts either.

Looking at the map afterwards you can see how the positioning is not accurate and seem to suggest I was staggering along the route from side to side like a drunkard!

This was particularly frustrating in a recent 15k when I thought I was flying but then had to run another 1.5k to complete it.

Are you aware of this and will it be fixed. For me to have to revert back to my garmin would be a retrograde step that I really want to avoid.
