New Strava app for Apple Watch to support Series 2+

We are excited to release an updated Strava app which supports standalone recording using the built-in GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2+.

Please note: To support the GPS in the Apple Watch Series 2+, we redesigned the app to work separately from the phone. Even if your watch still connects to the GPS from your phone, the app functions independently on the watch.

If you're experiencing technical troubles installing, recording, or syncing Apple Watch activities, please contact us directly by submitting a ticket at the bottom of this post.

  • Having major issues with AW1. If why it is not recording is because I am supposed to wait for gps signal or something (or some other user issue), please make that clearer.

  • Wow - what a steaming pile of garbage.  I can't believe someone got paid to produce this.  You should be ashamed.  Seriously.

I'm a runner with 1st gen Apple Watch, who always runs with my phone for music/podcasts/etc.  The first version of the watch app "mostly worked" - and now, since the new "Series 2" update - the watch app is completely useless to me.   My distance is off by 10-20%, no more voice announcements, haptics, constant "upload failed" messages on the phone

  • Having trouble with Apple Watch app. Have app open with Start button showing but nothing happens when that big orange button is pushed. GPS seems to be working on the phone since I'm able to see location on Maps. Tried reinstalling app on phone and on watch with no luck.

One of the reasons I got the watch is to use Strava running Help!

  • Please reverse the last update.  I am now back to using my iPhone for running.  I was so happy with my AW2 before you "improved" Strava".  Now I cannot use it. I would rather be tethered to my iPhone.  I hear there is a work around by downloading the gpx files and uploading them as new activities.  Please share the procedure so we can use it until you fix this mess.  And please acknowledge that you hear us.

  • I scanned through the last few pages but didn't see any official reply. Sorry if I missed it.

Does Strava have plans to let the apple watch function as a remote for the app, as it did prior to the stand alone update?

I always run when my phone and I loved having the audio cues. Now when I start with my watch I do not get audio and if I start via my phone I don't get status glances on mileage or time.

Is it time to switch and cancel my premium account?

  • Seems to be broken here too. Can't press the start button. Us currently useless. Not good enough as a premium user!!

  • I like the app. Yet, I feel there could be further improvements.

    1) km and 1/2 km pace updates via Taptic or audio feedback (when using headphones).

Being able to set pace updates would help with training without checking watch.

    2) Improve reliability. Twice last week, once during a race, I pressed the start button and nothing happened. I was especially disappointed on the race day as I wanted to see pace data and percentage of run that was tempo and threshold pace. Is this problem that has previously been noted? I know my problem has had the same problem a couple of times.

    Thanks!

  • The new update has caused the watch to substantially underestimate distance. On two recent runs, it was .4 miles short on a 4mi run and .6 mi short on an 8mi run. These are loops I have run many times with my Garmin and have checked by measuring via google maps/ Strava mapping tool.

    Problems that remain:

    1. Auto-pause is much too sensitive- looking at the watch causes it to pause. This may be contributing to under measuring distance. I will probably turn off auto-pause once the weather gets nicer and my watch isn't potentially buried under several layers of clothing, but for now I need it because I have multiple street crossings to contend with before I get to the running path.

    2. Lack of haptic/audio feedback for lap markers

    3. Lack of manual lap ability- needed for interval training

    4. Very slow screen refresh

    5. Lack of 1/100th display- I think most runners want to see distance down to the hundredth.

  • On version 5.12 by starting from Apple Watch the app used to:

    *Start properly
    *Vibrate at every 0.5K
*Give audible updates of splits and current KM
*Display meaningful data without any lag
    *End properly

None of this happens with any of the latest releases. How is this progress?!?

To stand at the start of a run and not know whether or not the Start button is actually going to do anything is not a great feeling and certainly not something I expect as a paying premium member.

Trying to pace a friend to a PB today was an absolute joke, I might as well have just run with a kitchen timer. It left me trying to preempt where splits were so that I could raise my watch in time for the display to come on, catch up and show me the time, and then work out pace needed to get my friend home in a new fastest time. As someone else has already mentioned, the lag time is just an accident waiting to happen, someone is going to hurt themselves endlessly staring at their watch waiting for the info to appear.

Another earlier comment was around rereleasing 5.12 for AW1 users even if it meant  we had to pay for that too. As it stands my paid up subscription is useless, at the start of my latest half marathon the app wouldn't start so my PB on that course hasn't been recorded. I received none of the little trophies that are so addictive and my achievements don't reflect my improved results. I've paid for something that used to fulfil it's purpose and no longer does. The only other option seems to be to buy an AW2, what's a few more hundred bucks aye? But the irony is that the app doesn't even seem to work that well on that either thus defeating the purpose of changing the thing in the first place! People with AW2 seem to also be talking about it not starting properly and distances being way out.

Your support pages seem to just say "yep, we know this doesn't work and that doesn't work etc but we're looking in to it" but there's no time scale, and worse, the language used seems to imply that we're all a bit of an inconvenience as we'd like an app that actually works.

Can't stress my disappointment enough, you've ruined what was thee best ruining app out there for Apple Watch.

  • Ok... latest update seems better regarding distance and pace measurements (as compared to my Garmin.)

However, the stupid "Moving Time" use when the run is set as a 'run' type (go figure!) makes the distance, time and pace less than what it really was. I did a 2.55 mile run this morning with no stopping which Garmin showed a 9.49 pace for 25 minutes. Strava lists the same run as only being 2.4 miles at a 9.45 pace but only for 24.14 time duration. So the paces matched just be chance, but the duration and mileage are wide apart. If I change the Strava type to 'race', then the elapsed time is used which also corrects the mileage and then matches the Garmin almost exactly.

It's silly that moving time is used without any way of turning it off other than to list every run as a race. I see this has gotten a ton of coverage in other threads for almost 3 years! This simply cannot be that hard to make optional. If Strava isn't interested in listening to their users, then I won't re-new my premium membership (expensive anyway at $59 a year) once it expires.

Very disappointed in the lack of customer satisfaction interest. There are other options out there that seem to listen..

  • All of these comments sure do real like an open beta forum. Hmm.

Would love it if Strava even seemed remotely concerned about how poorly this is all going for so many of us.

  • I just went for a run (Apple Watch 2 without my phone) but when I open the app the "Upload Complete" bar just flashes over and over and my run doesn't show up on my account. In fact, the app now seems to be stuck with this constant "Upload Complete" bar flashing constantly. Any ideas?

  • Mind the DTMF mixed quality BADLY affects your communications. I have a real story for you; I'm calling one of my banks, they Rep is transferring me to a robot to enter my pin #... I'm entering it, and the robot can't understand the pin. The robot says to enter again... after 3 tries it gives up. ...., and it does not understand your commands due to the line in not DTMF. You must troubleshoot DTMF problems with your VoIP connection through route-test com. They offer a free testing credits. You can find the solution quickly. #VoIP https://route-test.com/voip-quality-delay-jitter-measurement/

  • Hi

I have an AW1 and am also getting the issue where all I see on the watch is a big orange start button which no amount of pressing activates. I have uninstalled & reinstalled the aps, I have unauthorized & re-authorized the various connections between apps, I installed the new IOS updates but still the same issue.

I have continued to use the app on the phone but then that doesn't pick up any heart rate data from the app.

Very dissapointed to be paying for something that seems to get less user friendly and worse with each update

  • You've killed what was a great app for AW1 users who started/stopped runs & took heart rate with AW and utilised their phone & headphones for music and audio cues. Cancelling my premium subscription and looking at alternatives, plenty of them out there.

  • To be honest I don't like at all the following:
    1. The app on the phone is no longer connected to the watch. First time I was confuesed. I started either on the watch and on the phone and at the end I got 2 events recorded. I always carry the phone to see the map and before I was able to record also heart rate. Now to do it I will not be able to have heart rate, or viceversa (I will record heart rate but I cannot see the map).
    2. You cannot use beacon function with app watch
    3. You cannot have live segment with app watch
    4. You cannot have miles summary with app watch

All this was available with the previous version because the watch and the phone were connected and phased in recording the same session

  • Two things:

    1) MIRROR PHONE & WATCH: It would be really nice to mirror the activity on the watch and iPhone. I mount my iPhone to monitor speed, cadence, etc during the ride and it's not idea to keep checking my wrist for speed, etc.

    2) HEART RATE SYNCING: Right now, if I use my mounted iphone to track an activity, there's no way to use the watch heart monitor :/

  • I am having a lot of trouble with my strava app on my Apple Watch series 2. It is not counting my first 1-2 miles of my run after uploading it on the app. When I'm running, it counts it and it'll say I ran 7 miles, but then when I upload it onto the app it says I only ran 5.5 when I'm 100% positive I ran 7.

  • Reasonable happy with app and mileage is more accurate than before. Still have trouble with auto pause being too easy to turn due to a wet sleeve brushing the display or something, I finish a run or ride and find auto pause turned on and stopped recording mileage mid run. Maybe lock the auto pause setting when an activity is started so if it's set off it stays off for the duration of the activity.

  • So the fix for the start button not working is here https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000103390-Apple-watch-s2-start-button

You have to delete everything including health data when it asks. Reinstall and follow the steps in the official comment in the above link. You might see that strava doesn't appear in 'motion and fitness' but if you go to start a run on your watch after doing all the above it will ask you to turn this on. And bingo should now be fixed!

  • It appears that there is an answer to the "start button not working" issue. I eventually found this buried away in one of the help pages:

The start button no longer works

Navigate to Settings on your iPhone and select Privacy > Motion & Fitness. Make sure Strava is turned ON so the toggle is highlighted green. You may have to uninstall and reinstall the Strava app before doing so. While in the Privacy section of your Strava, make sure Location services and Health are enabled.

This worked for me - although I had to uninstall and reinstall the app on my phone and watch; and then open them on both devices, which resulted in various prompts to allow them to access Health etc.

Now that it is finally working again, I can see if the latest update has solved the accuracy issue.

  • As quite a few other have said one of the major things this new app breaks is the ability to use the watch for heart rate and then also have a bluetooth cadence sensor attached to the phone.

You now have the choice of

    • start the ride from the watch and get heart rate recorded but no cadence or visibility of the workout on the phone.

    or

    • start the ride on the phone and get cadence recorded but no heart rate or visibility of the workout on the watch.

This is a big loss of functionality when the previous version of the app let you start a workout on the watch and then gave you visibility of the workout on both the watch and phone and let you record heart rate and cadence at the same time.

The ability to ride or run with just the watch on its own is a really nice feature but especially for rides when I always have my phone in my bag there really needs to be a way to connect the workouts on the watch and phone back up again so you can see your current progress on either device and can make use of the watch for heart rate and phone for connected cadence sensors at the same time.

  • Hi All,

I'm using an AW2. Since the last update, I noticed that if the localisation service (within the phone confidentiality parameter) is disabled within the phone, Nothing happen while pushing on the Start Button.

So the localisation within the phone must be activated if we want to use the app properly on the AW2 even if we want to use it on stand alone !!!!!  May be something close to the use of the AW1 .... May be it is the same problem with the AW1.

So It will be really Nice if we could get at least notification about which GPS is in use, the Watch or the phone, or be able to notify that we want to use the GPS from the AW2 even if the localisation is deactivated on the phone.A screen with all the status around GPS set up would be really nice. For AW1, notify that the localisation service from the Phone is activated or not ....

It will be also really nice to be able to push a button or the screen to get Lap time (for interval training ...) !

    Hope this will help !

    Alex

  • To the management team at Strava, I can understand that it will be difficult to get all the new features into the app while keeping the old features (as they can sometimes be incompatible) and ignoring the fact that your competitors have been able to achieve this, perhaps a very smart thing you could do is release version 5.12.0 back into the app store as "Strava Classic". Target this specifically to those users who do not benefit (or perceive no benefit) to an untethered experience.

An example of this done well is "Sports Tracker", they had their existing application and renamed it to "Sports Tracker Classic", their new experimental app was released as "Sports Tracker". Looking at the store now, it is simply "Sports Tracker" and "Sports Tracker 2".

So why not just have "Strava Classic" and "Strava", or "Strava" and "Strava 2" (or perhaps "Strava AW edition")

If your company no longer has the source code to the 5.12.0 version, you need to fire your entire engineering team as they have failed your company completely.

It has been almost a quarter of a year since you released 5.14.0, that is a quarter of a year of pissing off customers. Noted that the percentage of upset customers would not be great, but no company can afford to throw away subscriptions and this is what your company appears to be doing.

May I finally suggest that this time you engage your users to ask them if they would like 5.12.0 to be released as "Strava Classic". In fact, to the users who read this and agree with it, reply with a +1.

  • Hi there,

First off all, i think you guys are doing a great job!

I've just started using Strava Premium for a reason: Live Segments and Beacon.

My iPhone is always in my backpack so Live Segments on the phone just don't work for me. I need them in my watch. And beacon... are you guys leaving security out (even if it only works when you take your iphone with you)

Here's an idea: sync to the watch the GPS data needed to know we're on a starred segment as well as our personal best 5 times or so. The watch should be able to do the rest.

Other +1: heart rate alarms - This is very important

Other +1: fatigue increase after a ride/run -> recovery days

Other +1: Live segments, again and again.

Please, these are the more important functions of premium.

    Regards and good work!
