Duplicate Cycling Segments for Ebike Segments

Hi,

a lot of people with ebike are still registering their activities as nomral bike because no segments exists in the ebike section.

Most of them do that because they don't know (or they don't want to spend the time) to create new segment in Ebike categorie.

I think it will be awesome if all the bikes segments could be duplicate in eBikes categories.

This way, the ebikes owner are gona record their activities in the ebike section because they will be able to see the existing segments.

Of course, keep the leaderboard seperate, just duplicate the segments.

Thanks.

  • Hi Jeff.

As you can see, many people want this. Would be soo good if you guys take time to consider it and make it happend :)

  • Totally agree. It's so annoying not having an e bike segment. Would love to see this happen please

  • this is crazy, constantly having to create segments for ebikes when they are already available for normal bikes....just copy them across please strava for the ebike sector....apart from anything, strava restricts how many segments can be created within a certain time bizarrely????

  • Also... being able to have EBike ride as default would be great and would address the issue of registering times in non ebike category

  • I agree..... this is seriously pissing me off. I've emailed Strava who refuse to see this as an issue, as "ebike segments haven't been riden before"!!?.
Trying a few times to explain that an ebike is actually a bike... and we're ridding the same MTB segments that have been set up over years is falling on deaf ears.
I fail to comprehend how it would be difficult to copy the GPS data points for 'ride segments across to 'ebike' so we can ride and compare the same trials.... what STRAVA say we have to do is re-record all the segments if we want then.... bloody ridiculous that more or less for me now makes Starva pointless and will just use my Garmin records from now on

  • We have KOM and QOM ,why not just add EKOM and EQOM ?

Sounds like a pretty easy fix to me.

  • I do have a question about making new segments in the ebike category. If I create a segment from a ride that was set to ebike, will it show up as an overlapping segment for someone set to ride?  Are segments specific to the activity or to the location?

  • Tom, ebike segments will be shown for ebike rides only.

  • Have to agree with this. Getting an e-mtb soon and really want to ride the same segments and compare progress. With the growing number of e-mtb users I feel this should be added to (and moved up) your "to do" list!

  • Please allow the duplicate normal ride segments on ebike saves me upsetting the locals 😂

  • Same segments for both bikes and ebikes is an easy and fast solution. We have filters for age, weight, why not a filter for bike and ebikes?
Many e-bikers will register correctly their activity if we have same segments.
Please share this thread with you colleagues, with need more votes yo increase attention from Strava.

  • eBike support is bad. Apart from the lack of segments until enough people create them from their rides:

Did you guys get "live segments" audio notification and the live tracking screen when you start/finish a favorite segment with your eBike? I don't

Did you get your eBike rides synced into Google Fit? I don't

  • Segments are the only reason to use Strava and not something else. After starting to ride an electric bike I quit riding regular MTB.

If I want to track my own results in the segments that are popular and available I need to go somewhere and hide or unhide something?!

If Strava ignores our needs for easy segment access for ebikes, users like me will ignore Strava.

  • I've submitted a request for duplicate segments and more or less had an argument by email about what ebike riders want and expect....
I've stopped using Strava and just use my Garmin..... what's the point of Strava if suddenly all the routes I've ridden for years are no longer available..... ridiculous

  • This is a serious issue - I am not an ebiker but because ebikers are (quite fairly) wanting to see how they perform on downhill segments, they are not tagging rides - this is spoiling competitive climb segments amongst non-e-bikers. This means I have to flag rides to "clean" the leaderboard and potentially discourages the ebiker from riding at all - not good. By not having a parallel system it encourages ebikers to NOT flag rides - and this kills the platform. Please fix - I'm tired of flagging rides and this also drives antagonism between e and non-e riders.

  • +10000000 JD.  I ride all kinds of bikes - 'cross, gravel, fatbike, XC/enduro, and eMTB.  I like to segment my rides to track them separately, but eMTB is the one that really causes me grief, because no segments exist.  I end up deleting my eMTB ride after I check my times on DH segments, but as you suggest, it's just silly that I need to do so.

STRAVA, THIS IS A RIDICULOUSLY EASY UPDATE FOR YOU TO MAKE!  JUST DO IT!!!

  • That E-Bikes claiming a lot of KOMs recently is a problem here (Austria) too. I always thought this was an issue with unfair (or simply unaware) bikers. But now I must learn that E-Bikers do not have any of the existing segments. This is of course a huge reason to keep the rides as normal bike rides.

I would strongly suggest other (sub-)categories in addition to KOM/QOM like already suggested: eKOM/eQOM and oKOM/oQOM (o == old-school (name only for illustration)). Best with some sort of symbol (e-bike with some green flash symbol or something and the old-school/unsupported with a lower leg or something) instead of a prefix.

Just a matter of fact: As the issue seems to be a growing problem and the leaderboards are 'destroyed' for a normal bike rider, for me personally the reason to use Strava vanishes.

A big issue are of course all the auto-synced rides from other services, maybe it would be necessary in the future to mark rides per default as E-Bike-Rides and needs to be changed in the settings. Because it is worse if e-bike rides show up as normal rides, than normal rides as e-bike rides.

  • In the absence of Strava doing something on their own to fix this, I've written a little javascript user script to automate the process. I'm a programmer but not a javascript expert, so sorry for any bugs - it works for me, at least! Don't panic too much if the script accidentally create a segment you didn't want - as long as it's yours, you can delete it, or change it from private to public (but NOT the other way). Also keep in mind that Strava limits you to creating 10 new segments a day.

Anyway, to use it, all you need to do is:

    1. Download tampermonkey (https://www.tampermonkey.net/) or another userscript manager

    2. Open this link (https://github.com/nickbeeton/garminstuff/raw/master/Convert%20bike%20segments%20to%20ebike%20segments%20on%20Strava.user.js)

On tampermonkey at least, it will automatically ask you to install the script, so just click "Install"

    3. Open any ebike ride on Strava - it should show you a couple new buttons titled "Copy Bike Segments to PUBLIC Ebike Segments" and "Copy Bike Segments to PRIVATE Ebike Segments". If you press one of these buttons, the script will briefly change your ebike ride to a bike ride, look at the list of bike segments on your ride, then change your ride back to ebike and try to create ebike segments with the same names and locations as the bike ride segments. You can open the developer console (Ctrl-Shift-I) to see if it failed for any reason - it will refuse to create an ebike segment that's too similar to one that exists already.

Let me know if it works for you, and what you think!

  • Hey Nick - I like where you're going with this, but it didn't work for me. Crashed with an invalid reference of some kind.  I'm on Chrome 76.  Any thoughts?

  • Thanks for picking up on that bug Rick! I've implemented your fix, hopefully that will be fine now. Let me know if you have any further issues.

Also I'm not 100% sure but it looks like any segments that the script fails to create due to the 10-per-day limit are put in a queue by Strava and automatically created the next day... if anyone else can confirm that, I'll remove the bit in the code that stops the script when it detects the "You have created too many segments" alert.

  • Rick, this is great, I´m testing it with my rides on my 2 mountain bike parks here in Costa Rica, seems it´s working perfectly fine, will let you know if it is not.

    Thanks a lot

  • For what I see, seems there is no such thing as "segments in queue" after the limit has been reached, it just stops accepting them.

  • I’ve been manually creating ebike segments as I ride, but it a hassle and lots of existing segments do not match the current criteria for minimum length.
