Remove "Suggested Follows" from the feed

Please take "Suggested Athletes" out of the Activity Feed.

This was irritating even when it lived on the right hand side of the screen.  Suggesting local 'pros' who I've never heard of before.  Now suggesting people like my old fraternity brother's daughter and others that I'd never want to connect with, etc. but taking up valuable space in the Activity feed every time I visit the page.

Please please please remove.  It's like an advertisement that has nothing to do with my workouts or those of my community.

Or at least remove for premium users.

Thanks

Mike

Removing Suggested Follows from the feed is not an option at this time.

We will continue to monitor feedback and to make improvements to this feature.

  • Please could you at least provide the option to switch "suggested ahtletes" off.

  • totally agree.  stop sending my name and info out to others, too.  if i wanted to join a matchmaker site i'd do that.  i clicked on the "total privacy" button for a reason.

strava would be better off working on its weaknesses:  maps, editing, cut and paste, autocorrect, customer service, gps signal strength, interface with WhatsApp, interface with iPhone health, duplicate entries, etc.

  • I'm in total agreement.  Especially insofar as the app is concerned.  With the suggested athletes taking up the full width of the screen, scrolling down to see older activities means it's far too easy to accidentally tap "follow" on a member you did not intend to.  I speak from personal experience!

Furthermore, and this is slightly o.t, I don't think it's proper the system permits you to follow someone without first viewing their profile.  Needs to be a 2-step process... view then follow.

  • This is irritating.  I don't want to have extra crap in my "Activity" feed.  Help out a premium user!

  • I agree. It's annoying. I've been a paying member for years and not once have I ever followed someone strava suggested.

  • I would also like the suggested athletes option removed but more importantly, and for safety and privacy reasons I want to be able to remove myself as someone who can be suggested to others. I know who I want to know on Strava and don’t need to be “suggested” to be added by others, especially on such a sensitive app that tracks your location and activities. There is a level of vulnerability as a woman to know that your name is being suggested to strangers out there just because of a degree of separation. I don’t need that extra threat to my safety. I’m here to track my rides with the friends I have. I don’t need this app to help me find new ones or attract weirdos.

  • Agree with all of the above.  Its very annoying.

Strava please make this function optional.  Preferably with default OFF.

  • Like the others in this post I find the Suggested Athletes on the Android app a constant annoyance.  It serves no purpose for me, I already know who I want to follow.  Why on earth isn't there an option to just turn this irritation off.  Any form of constant badgering like this can only lose Strava users, please let us turn it off.

  • Adding my voice to this also, please let us opt out of this feature.  I'm premium and I hate the hundreds of suggestions constantly showing up in my timeline.

It's even worse that Strava will use your private contacts to also make suggestions if you enable the "Beacon" feature.  Presumably you're granting access to your contacts for that feature but then they go and crawl those connections for their marketing purposes.

Don't become Facebook / Twitter / Instagram please.

  • This feature is one of the most annoying things I have ever come across. If I want to follow an athlete, I will decide myself who that will be. I use strava as a training tool. Please do not turn strava into yet another pointless social networking site. This is not what I joined strava for.

  • HI Micky.  I have an iPhone and set the Strava "privacy-o-meter" to "high."  This didn't stop the suggestions.  Strava's not using my contacts, but they are trolling my followers/following list to find people in common.

Hey I just found out from Strava Customer Service that the "This Year" on the user homepage is for Premium members only and only if you have a yearly goal. WTF?  "This Week" is free.  Oh, I could get This Year distance on my iPhone Health app, but Strava still has not figured out how to eliminate the duplicated data sent to this app.

I believe this is called "circling the drain."

  • Can't disable it as far as I can tell on IOS.  I keep hitting X beside suggested athletes and they keep coming in.  It bothers me every time I open Strava now.  I primarily keep a strata Premium membership to support a service I like not for the extra features. I've turned off the auto-renew on my subscription so can re-evaluate when it comes up in August.  I don't want to use a support a services that's bugging me...

  • I agree. Please remove, strava. I've declined many suggested athletes and now I keep getting even more obscure suggestions. Really annoying

  • Hear hear! Please remove this Instagram style nonsense. Also, if the suggestions were any good it might help improve my feed. But none of the people in the suggestions I even remotely know. Now, I know that you want to increase the interaction with your app, but make the app better instead of just more connections with people we don't know.

Please remove it or give us the option to hide it.

  • Dear Strava

In relation to my previous post I have copied the definition of Data protection and the recent update re GDPR.

I would ask for your comment on the below and how you propose to deal with this Act on behalf of all European users of Strava and the use of my personal details you like to share?

I would respectfully request a reply and you current thoughts on the Act so I can make an informed decision.

The summary guide to GDPR compliance in the UK. Europe is now covered by the world's strongest data protection rules. The mutually agreed General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on May 25, 2018, and was designed to modernise laws that 'protect the personal information of individuals.'

    Regards

    Lou

  • How sad to see that this thread is still active and nothing has changed after more than a year.

It confirms to me that my decision to cancel my premium subscription was a good one.

I can't say I've missed the features. I took the initial decision to pay for preimum more as a gesture of appreciation and support for strava than because I wanted any of the extra bits.

But this strive to become another social media player, despite such a lot of heartfelt protests from paying members has used up any enthusiasm and goodwill I had for the company.

    No regrets here...

  • I'm a premium member of Strava and 'suggested athletes' in my feed is neither wanted nor appreciated. Strava please desist from this activity! If I want to follow an athlete (ONLY people I know) I will search for them myself.

  • Reading this and other threads like it has made me less inclined to use Strava in the long term, and definitely has disinclined me to ever pay for it. Frankly I care almost not at all about the social aspects of this app, and if their development is geared toward driving this folderol I can't see myself as a long-term user.

  • Hey Elle .... How about suggesting to your Overlords that we Premium paying members be given the option to turn off all the shit ideas currently being forced down our throats such as non-chrono, stupid PR awards simply because we rode a segment for the first time, and on, and on, and on? I cancelled my Premium recently because I am getting near Zero return on my investment, and being given no options to shape my own feed is part of that estimation. I have seldom seen a corporation/organization that so actively ignores its user and/or gives no value to those paying for extra value. FWIW ...

  • This needs to go or an option added to turn it off.  It serves no useful purpose and clutters up the feed.  As a premium subscriber I find this extremely annoying.  Hard to believe that anyone would even come up with such a poor idea and even harder to believe that whoever makes decisions would agree.  It's terrible.

  • I have created a support ticket 3 months ago and nothing has been changed. They said that you can get rid of it when you remove access to address book and facebook, but it doesn't work for me. I really give up, because I don't have a feeling that they want to have satisfied users and they care about their premium users. This is the reason why I have canceled my subscription after 5 years...

  • I am not happy with this level of intrusion.  I don't care people I may know have joined.  I have a limited amount of people that I want to let know that I am exercising.  This isn't facebook and shouldn't act like it.  There's an anti-connected social media revolution coming and Strava isn't part of that.  So for that reason, as a paying Premium member since May 2016, I'm out.  Well done for ruining it.

  • I'm so completely annoyed by this feature and more so by Strava's ignoring our requests to turn off this feature and BS-ing us about "testing" the feature.   Maybe they're testing how many of us don't renew, who know.  I've been a member since 2012 and I've decided that I will not renew my premium membership when it comes up.  Good job Strava with ruining what was once a great site.

  • I see this post has been open for some time so I'll also add my request:

Please get rid of suggested athletes or allow us to turn it off!!

I've joined Summit today in the hope that paid customers would not have to see this feature, but alas it's still there.

  • Can this feature get more annoying?  I just unfollowed someone and guess who shows up in my "Suggested Friends"?? You got it, the person I just unfollowed 1 click before.  Just an incredibly stupid feature, please, again, let us remove this!

  • Now that Mark Gainey and Michael Horvath have "re-discovered" the purpose of Strava:  "Our answers to those questions have only gotten clearer in the past few months, and we’re now leading the company with a single purpose: rededicating Strava to our community."

Instead of bragging endlessly about reinstating the chronological timeline, how about removing this Suggested Athletes, Suggested Follow feature or at least make it optional for subscribing members!

There are hundreds of members that want this turned off for 3 years now,  Do the right thing!

  • Putting my name on this petition...it can't be that difficult to put an opt-out toggle in the settings for the activity feed.  I would remove the Suggested Athletes and any other ad looking thing in a heartbeat.  Really annoying when viewing from the app on my android.  It takes up nearly the whole screen!

Also, would be nice to prevent the "new feature" ads from taking up space in the feed if I've already set them up (like Beacon).

This should be implemented for everyone...especially the premium members.
