Year KOM vs All time KOM

I would like to the main focus of KOMs on yearly KOM over all time KOM. Definitly keep both. With Annual KOMs reset every year, people have to defend their title. Also, it wouldn't be as big of a deal when pros come around and destroy the local leader boards.

Cheers.

  • It's been tried before, it was terrible then, it is no different now.

If you want the KOM then go out and earn it. Fastest time is fastest time, simple as that.

  • I'm all for improvements, but this exact thing was tried in 2015.  And the user community gave it a hugely negative response... see this thread:

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208861157-Feedback-for-Annual-Achievement-Awards

The bulk of posters in the thread, myself included, felt it cluttered up the activity page with a lot of meaningless awards.  Especially in the first few months of the year when even a leisurely ride would garner an untold amount of "yearly kom awards" on less-traveled segments.  Also, holders of true KOM's felt they were being belittled, and their achievements diluted by the year awards.

I'm sure the office staff felt their efforts would be well-received, but they were forced to relent and discontinue the awards under heavy criticism.  I do agree that our year-by-year progress over segments can be difficult to calculate since (I at least) haven't been able to figure out a way to see my results for a previous year.   --

  • Here's an idea... how about "Past 12 months KOM."  This way they won't automatically reset on 1 Jan, but you'd need to re-certify your KOM annually.  I'm a fan of all-time KOMs remaining primary, but this might be a nice option.

  • This.  Could be by month as well.

Or just a filterable leader board (sort by month, week, mileage this month, etc.)

I mean, one of the KOMs in my area is by a pro tour rider done 5 years ago, and he doesn't live in this area.  That's not useful of a marker.

  • I guess if they tried and it didn’t fly, it didn’t fly. That was before my time. My thinking was simply that Mohamed Ali isn’t the champ right now and Greg Lemond didn’t just win the tour. If you want a title, you have to prove it year after year. You can lose your title but you can still be the greatest or hold the record.

  • Dear all, I personally agree with Alex. Obviuosly the absolute KOM have to be manteined, but to make STRAVA more challenging, it could make sense also to estabilish the YEAR KOM and trophies (till maybe 10th?).
Furthermore it could make sense also to distinguish the cyclist cathegory (pro, ebike, etc.).
    What do you think?

  • If you want to see who the fastest person is on a segment for the current year, you can just sort the leaderboard by "This Year".  It is all there already.  You don't need a whole new set of KOM crowns cluttering the feeds.  I was around when they tried that and it was really annoying.
