Can anyone provide an explanation as to why Strava does not include users walk/hike data to totals?

If I do a 30k walk/hike why does that not get added to total weekly/yearly distance travelled?

It forces users to list walks/hikes as runs and thus corrupts everyones overall user data. It also makes Strava's assumptions and calculations on uses personal fitness way off.

To me this is inexplicable considering every other major app does this. However, I understand there must be a reason, many people on these boards have discussed and asked for it. Can anyone provide an explanation as to why Strava refuse to add this?

It is the single reason I will not pay for pro.

    Hi Folks,

I passed this along to our Product Managers. They're placing more attention on walkers and this community post helps them in their prioritization. Unfortunately, I don't have an ETA for when this will be implemented. Once I do have a solid update, I'll let everyone know.

  • Hi Jason, we are working on better support for all our activity types this year, which includes more inclusive profile stats. Please stay tuned.

  • Can you also include Weight Training etc in the Weekly totals so you can get a total overview of all your training?

  • I add my vote to this. I love Strava for cycling, but also walk regularly and would like to be able to see walk totals and stats too. Hope these features can be added soon.

  • I agree, walks/hikes should be included on Strava. Walks & hikes should be combined as one, along with running & cycling.

  • Is there any update on when other activities totals, such as Walking, will be added. Can't believe it takes so long. I have seen requests for this going back to 2014!!!!!!

  • Ditto that.  I'm forced to showing my "walk" miles as "run" miles.

Is there any update that you (Strava) can offer?

  • Veloviewer.com allows users to generate custom totals, selecting whichever activity types wanted. I strongly recommend checking it out and paying the modest "pro" fee. I find it indespensible.

  • As an aside, I view hikes as worthy of recording, but walking is a normal daily activity for which stats worluld be fairly meaningless without a Fitbit type of continuous monitoring, which isn't the strava model. But that's just my preference.

  • I guess i could use the Map My Walk ap instead of using Strava for walking stats but prefer to have my cycling, running, and walking stats all in one place.

Any updates on having a walking feature?

  • Just cancelled my premium subscription as my walks don't get included in the totals.  I'm moving to something more suitable to my needs

  • Ugh.  Just moved all of my info over to Strava from Endomondo....but I am a hiker not a runner.  I labeled all of my hikes "hikes" only to realize that now I have zero miles for the year.  ANNOYING.

  • Shame on you strava ! Give the people who support your company what they want. Listen to your customers

  • Seems silly to me. So many people asking. Think I’ll switch to using another app.

  • Walking used to be an option 3 or 4 years ago. I haven't used the app for a few years and just noticed that only cycling / running were available as recording options

    • A hiking option is needed. All segments should be available across all activities (to avoid duplication) with the option to filter by activity. This would avoid one segment for fell running and a 2nd for hiking. Just have one segment with the option to filter the results by activity.

To be honest, I'll probably cancel the pro after this trip away until there are better features for hiking, mountaineering type activities.

  • Just switched to Strava and do walking as well cycling so would like to see stats for both. Looking at thread there seems to beca demand for this but Strava have done nothing about it for nearly a year now - very disappointing. Could they least provide update as to if they are ever going to address this?

  • GGood morning, my Strava is not registering activities in the challenges, I already had 4 activities this month, including a 103 km activity, but none of them were registered in any of the challenges, please check what the problem is.

  • Guess Strava is thumbing their noses (could've used a metaphor about fingers) on poor walkers and hikers because they don't belong to a sizeable marketing audience like that of runners or cyclists.  And also Strava assumes all of them are just tooling around and don't care about intervals or personal bests. *SMH*

For me, this feature is going to be helpful because I want to slice-and-dice my recorded walks apart from my runs and rides.  I also wanted to know through Strava what shoes I am using more for walking or for running and when it's time for me to replace it.  I also use my office shoes when I do walks at work.  Since everything's bunched together in the Runs it's hard to keep track things.  My point of view.

  • The thing is, it's nearly been a year since the "Official Comment". It doesn't look like a change will happen any time soon.

We spend a lot of time in the mountains and travel at pace and like to record progress etc but the lack of segment creation, features and challenges for anything other than running or cycling is, as Ricky said, giving the finger to all lessor sports. I do cycle as well but our main activity is mountaineering so I've just cancelled premium as it doesn't represent good value for that.

  • Can anyone from Strava please reply to this, we've been waiting a year now, stayed tuned as advised but still nothing, no replies to queries or updates.

  • Agree 100% with those asking politely for walking/hiking to be included in stats. Screams discrimination and walkers/hikers are second class athletes. I didn’t feel second class climbing Kilimanjaro!

  • I'm with them! Would really love for hike/walk totals to be added to total mileage. The Strava platform, from my perspective, looks a bit stagnant. Is there a published roadmap we could look at?

  • It looks like they aren’t going to add it. I’ve been logging my hikes as runs which is a bummer. Is there a better app that does cycling, running, and hiking?

  • Well, I just started using Strava and am a hiker and biker.  I just finished climbing Mt Fuji 2 days ago and today I look on my page and see under Stats that there is no miles and then I notice that there is no "hiking" option.  WTH.  Then I find this thread and I see the official response was "stay tuned" over a year ago.  What a joke.

  • Another vote. I mostly walk and hike. Want to keep using Strava but you all are making it tough. We are just talking stats here, shouldn't be hard.

  • Another vote. I'm shocked it does not track hikes in my training hours. What have other people been using? I love Strava, but this is a deal breaker for me as I train for an upcoming 24 hour race.
