Dirt Bike, Enduro, or Motocross Activity Type

There needs to be this option to clearly separate MTB users from dirt bikers.

There are cycling KOMs in my area which have been obtained by people who clearly state they are using dirt bikes. Meaning that its impossible for a cyclist to get to the top of the leaderboard, which is very annoying.

I also imagine it would be beneficial for those who cycle and ride dirt bikes, allowing them to separate their rides and get more beneficial leaderboards.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Adding an activity option for motocross, motorcycle rides, or other types of motor-sports is not under consideration at Strava. I hope we can consider this request at a future time.

Motorized equipment is allowed on Strava, but we have Segment Leaderboard Guidelines that specify how this data should be categorized to preserve cycling and running segment leaderboards.

Please be sure to use the "Hide from Segment Leaderboards" option when uploading a motor-assisted ride activity. With this option enabled, your segment efforts will still appear under "My Results" for analysis. You can select this privacy setting on an individual activity, or you can go to your account settings to hide your segment times by default on all new uploads.  It is the activity owner's responsibility to correctly upload their data according to our Segment Leaderboard Guidelines. Thanks.

  • Yes, we also need private group segments. Many people have trails on their own, private property. If these segments are able to be viewed by everyone then trespassing becomes a problem. Segments on private property should have an option for private group segments.

  • My vote (here and in the other poll) is that Strava removes everything bar cycling, swimming and running.

  • Jamie, motorized vehicles are not permitted on Strava. If you know that somebody made KOM by using motorized help or motorized vehicle, flag the activity.

  • Whoever rides a dirtbike should not use Strava... It would be also smart to have the possibility to filter the results depending on what type of bike they are using. It is frustrating never being able to be KOM with my enduro bike because of the road bikes.

  • I did not realise i could flag activities so i have since done it. However i do still feel that they should have a vehicle/ mx option for people who wish to ride enduro

  • Sad to see Strava is not considering adding an MX or Enduro selection to acitivity type. I ride mountain bike, road bike and motocross/endure bikes. It seems odd to have a field for eBikes and all manner of activity but to exclude motocross. Give us a field and we will use it and be out of your hair. I understand it has a motor and people think it's not a workout. I suggest to those people that they try to keep up with me for 45 minutes. First you will need the technical skills to do so, second you will need to be in good physical condition. It's a different workout from any other riding... Motocross uses most every muscle in you body. If you have the technical skill to ride fast there is no better muscle workout. I will say it is biased to technical skill and strength and less on cardio.              That said, I will not renew my Premium membership without the addition of this field. I see no reason to pay for a service that does not consider the needs of its customers.              If the reasons are based on legal liability then Strava should be honest and state so.

  • I ride mainly road bike,  occasionally MTB and Cyclocross and I have a dirt bike for green lanes. I record several rides a week on Strava and have done for years.  Decided to take my Garmin out with me today to record my ride on the green lanes so i can share with my friends.  When i came to upload I discovered there is no dirt bike option.  So i haven't uploaded it because i don't want to spoil anyone's KOM etc.  I cannot believe that Strava is not considering an option for off road motorcycles.  It is a sport,  it is legal and it is a workout!

  • Strava should just add Dirt-biking.

It is a huge workout, in many ways more so than any other activity! Anyone that rides knows riding kicks your butt.

And having that category will separate it out so we don't have to listen to all the whiners about KOM.

We share the road with bikers, runners, hikers in my neck of the woods, AND I'd bet most of the offroad trails that runners, mtn bikers and hikers use, were originally made by off road vehicles and dirt bikers.

They have E-bike riding for crying out loud...  or perhaps this is a just against fossil fuel-ers?

  • Please add a MX (motocross) and Enduro option! We ride on closed tracks but we still want to keep record.

As it is for now we are mixed up with MTB's since we need to use that setting when we want to record.

  • This is extremely close-minded (and very unwise in a business sense) and concerning that Strava would state that "Adding an activity option for motocross, motorcycle rides, or other types of motor-sports is not under consideration at Strava." Strava is an amazing app. Why would you refrain - on purpose - from providing this feature to obviously your user base who requests it? I ride a motorcycle on the street. Many other here ride them off-road and in both situations, it would be beneficial to be able to track a route for those days when we just want to ride and get lost on purpose, but then later know where we had traveled.

This makes me consider not renewing my membership. That is very unwise to straight-up declare you won't add such a requested feature. I run, inline skate, bike, and ride motorcycles. How stupid not to include another form of travel.

    Bad move Strava... bad move.

  • I have now upgraded my Garmin Fenix with MotorSports+ so that part is fixed and I love it. Now it's time for Strava to shape up.
I fully agree with Ryan Cleary.

  • Well,... Here we are almost 2 years after your official response that " Adding an activity option for motocross, motorcycle rides, or other types of motor-sports is not under consideration at Strava".

The community asks that you strongly reconsider.

You have added E-bike as a new sport. It’s not a big jump to add Enduro.

Please add Enduro as a “sport” type and eliminate 99% of all flagged rides.

The Strava Platform is fantastic and already has the framework for this category.

  • Well I am now top of the leaderboard for ride... dont blame me- blame strava... I have a bike, albeit a motocross bike but its still a bike and i still ride it because it definately doesnt come under stair-stepper, snowshoe, hand cycle or anything else but still after years of people asking and a simple 'add' to the category list, you still have not added MX, motocross, enduro bikes, dirtbikes etc

We just want a category to select so it doesnt mess with other sport data... really, its just a simple add and done.

  • I did not review my “premium” subscription because of this. It’s silly of Strava to not listen to their customers. They won’t be getting any more $ from me.

  • @IvanH. ... Strava does have a category for ‘motorized vehicles’ .... go look and you will see an e-bike category.

  • @Chris P: Back then when I made the comment I don't think there was an e-bike category. Also, I don't think that motocross bikes (motorcycles) fit under e-bike.

@Chris Douglas: You really shouldn't be doing that. If you're riding a motorcycle, you don't belong on the leaderboards. By insisting on that you're going against Strava's Segment Leaderboard Guidelines (https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216919507-Segment-Leaderboard-Guidelines) and that can potentially earn you a ban. If Strava hasn't made a category for motorcycles that doesn't make it OK for you to disrupt other people's experience.

  • Yes i saw the e-bike category, but still not really the same is it! there should definitely be more bike options... moto, enduro, mx etc... i mean come on there are 3 ski categories, a walk and hike... yeah i can see they are different, but why still only one bike- they arent the same. should be MTB, track bike, road bike etc!

  • well I always use RIDE when riding a motorcycle ... make a stupid category for enduro/mx motorcycles!

so what if strava bans a user? free users are free to make, free to use the bike ride with another motorcycle ride :))))

  • You have no clue of what you are talking about, at least if you mean what I guess you do.

If you RIDE your enduro/mx on pavement or on the grass in your back yard and don't get sweat I understand why you don't understand, but that's up to you. All we other who excercise or race on our bikes need a category.

I guess you are one of those who risks to be banned. Why do you use Strava at all?

well I always use RIDE when riding a motorcycle ... PLEASE make a stupid category for enduro/mx motorcycles!

I use my enduro for thousands of calories per day (when I go ride, not every day unfortunately).
I guess you got it wrong: I like bike, e-bikes, love motorcycles (not on the street much, just offroad).
I do not understand what is the big deal to make a stupid category! There is e-bike! Well, My ktm-e freeride is fully electric, I can go and destroy all those times on e-bikes! But that is not the point! What is that hard to make another category? I suppose it s free for them to add on the server another Word!

I already asked/submitted the request for offroad motorcycles!

I do not care much for strava, they can ban me whenever, I do not have my hobby (motorcycles) here so no problem canceling my montly 5bucks or whatever to them! Wow what a big huge request for stupid strava!

Strava doesn t care much about their customers, paying customers!

  • This post is put of 2017, 2 Years and a half!

    Just Make that category already....

I mean there are so many other categories already, for stuff that doesn t make sense to me! But maybe I do not get it.

Motorcycles on the offroad or cross track can burn about 1000 calories Per hour. If that is not effort, please watch a YouTube video with any good Rider, you will see how tired is him after a real race!

  • This is the reason I don't pay for a premium membership. I ride both MTB and Off-road/dirt bikes. Can't track my miles separately, etc... not worth it until there is a dirt bike option.

  • Some of my favorite quotes from the founders:

"Our mission is to connect athletes to what motivates them and help them find their personal best. We mean it now more than ever."

"We are not yet a profitable company and need to become one in order to serve you better. And we have to go about it the right way – honest, transparent and respectful to our athletes."

"we’ll invest the most in the athletes who have invested in us"

"We simply want to make a product so good that you’re happy to pay for it."

Hey guys, add a dirt bike/enduro option and viola! You revenue bumps. It shows you care about all athletes instead of acting like the skiers vs snowboarders back in the day and gatekeeping what counts as exercise or not. You have a good product that we want to pay for, just waiting until you decide to be inclusive to ALL athletes. If you don't think its proper exercise, I personally invite you to ride with me on some local trails.

  • I ride out in the desert and didn’t know about the guidelines and leader boards. No one other than people on enduro/MX bikes ride the tracks I do but my rides still get flagged.

I’ve never felt the need to pay for premium but if there was a mx/enduro option I definitely would. I know MapMyRide has the MX option...

  • Just keeping this going. Pretty ridiculous that this still hasn't been implemented. I ride a ton of MTB, road, gravel, park, etc, and find Strava very useful in all sorts of different ways. I also ride enduro motorcycles, and would love to benefit on that front as well. Being able to see my distance traveled, elevation gained, elapsed time would be such a help when planning future routes in the mountains. I'd be able to more accurately know my fuel range, physical ability, etc. And as you all know, it's quite enjoyable seeing your time on a segment versus everyone else's, and I'd love to be able to do this with my moto as well.

The divide between cyclists and moto riders is dumb, and shouldn't be perpetuated by Strava. Strava, you send me notifications to "start an activity", but unfortunately I can't do that with all of my activities. Unfortunately I can only do activities that to align with your agenda.
