  • Monday is the first day of the week!

God created the world, and on the 7th day (i.e., SUNDAY) he rested.

You should be resting as well on Sunday.

Ready to start the week afresh.

    On MONDAY!

  • Sunday is not the 7th day of the week.  It never has been until the papacy openly changed it.  So if you're quoting the Bible, you might want to get that one right :)

  • @andreejs g

Okay, so I looked it up.  Pope Sylvester I (314-335AD), decrees the transfer of Sabbath rest to Sunday.

Foolish me, living in the 21st century, yes, let's set Strava according to the 4th century rest day.

  • Starting the week on Monday is totally ridiculous.  If you want to give people that as an option, fine.  But the default should be SUNDAY - like the entire rest of the world.

  • I thought it interesting that in the "From Earth to Saturn - 2013 Strava Milestones" email we all received on January 1st, under the heading "Activities throughout the week", both graphs used "Sunday to Saturday" as the horizontal axis :)

Someone at Strava obviously agrees with this thread!

It is a shame that no-one at Strava will talk about it.  Just a simple message saying  "our internal technical design stops us", or "all the reporting is had coded", or "we do it this way so you must too" would do the trick.

  • Start of week depends on standards used as with miles/kilometers etc. etc

Personally I prefer Monday but would be good to have an option as we do for Date Format, Units and Measurements.

Here in NZ we changed from imperial to metric measurement in 1969. Around 95% of the world population adhere to metric units. Burma, Liberia, Somalia, United States I think are the exception

US versus ISO rules (International Organization for Standardization)

In the United States, the traditional week starts on Sunday. In other countries, especially in Europe, the beginning of the week starts on Monday. In most European countries the week numbering is based on the ISO standard which also applies the first day of the week to Monday. Although this difference seems to set the two standards clearly apart, the differences in week numbering between the American and European systems are more likely to appear when week numbers fall across the end or beginning of a year.

The ISO week numbering standard are based on these rules:

    • An ISO week will always have seven days that can contain days from the current month as well as the next month. This is true of days that overlap from the last and first months of the year.

    • A week cannot be broken; there are no partial weeks that contain only four or five days.

    • The ISO week always starts on Monday and ends on Sunday.

  • Thanks for sharing, Derek.  Very helpful information.  Unfortunately, what is not helpful is the complete silence from Strava on this topic or numerous others. I came one click away from signing up for a paid membership but with memories of having been burned by MotionBased still fresh in my mind, I decided to hold off.  Given that Strava does not understand the basics of communication with customers, I have decided to move on and am trying to like RideWithGPS.  Not a great app - but they at least seem to listen to their customers.

  • Need to click on the "Like this" thumbs up at the top of the page, to climb the members priority ladder and carry more weight to get strava to look at change/new features, currently only 40 likes

  • I'm signed paying member on a month to month basis, not yearly. Tried and currently use a number of other sites, this is the only one I pay for. Pays to shop around for one you find most useful for your needs

  • @Bill F

"But the default should be SUNDAY - like the entire rest of the world."

If by "the entire rest of the world" you mean the USA, then yes.  But if by "the entire rest of the world" you mean, er, everywhere that is not USA, then no.

  • From the beginning, the request has been for an option, not to replace the current start day with Sunday. In the same way that everyone does not subscribe to the USA calendar, everyone does not subscribe to papal dicta concerning appropriate activities for Sunday. Sunday is usually race day in the USA, not exactly a day of rest.

I was guilty of USA-centric bias in this forum five months ago, which I humbly corrected. Please stand down from non-USA-centric bias. Neither position is helpful to the discussion, which should not be about the "correct" start day for the week, but for the option to choose. Allow me to reiterate what I believe are the two salient points:

    1. Start day of the week should be an option (at least Sunday or Monday, but why not any day?), in the same way that units-of-measure (statute or metric) and date-format are options. No one, including Pope Sylvester, would be inconvenienced by the option.

    2. Strava should at least offer a response to this issue, which is now nearly two years old. Sample responses:

        (a) We're working on it now. It will be included in the [date] release.

        (b) It is on the roadmap, scheduled for the [date] release.

        (c) Our design does not allow it. (This seems unlikely, but if it's the truth, at least it's a response.)

        (d) The number of premium menbers interested in this issue is relatively small. When a significant proportion of the premium membership revolts, we'll reconsider.

        (e) Something else that explains the lack of an option or acknowledgment of the issue.

Five months ago, in this forum, it was suggested that Strava poll the user base to gauge interest. Since a significant proportion of the Strava population is in the USA, I think the results would suggest that a Sunday option is a popular idea.

Personally, I may not renew my annual premium membership in August 2014 if this feature is not in place. For me, none of the myriad features introduced in the last year outweighs this lack. Vote with your feet.

  • Thanks Richard M., well summarised. Garmin, Sporttracks, Runkeeper, 2Peaks - I am sure there are many others have the option.  It is merely an option requested, not a change of default. I suspect it is a basic design issue, but it would be good for Strava to come clean.

I, like you, will not be renewing my premium without it. The premium content is largely cycling related, so this little issue of starting my week on a Sunday is enough to not make it worthwhile.

I decided to go with a Sunday start some 30 years ago as I found it very motivational to have 30% of my week done after day 1 (Sunday long runs). Very easy then to get the weekly target. Leaving my long run to the last day of the week puts the pressure on, and there is no need for that! So, no papal encyclical, no biblical driver, no USA calendar phobia, just plain old "works for me".

Thanks again for the summary, but I suspect Strava is not particularly responsive.

  • Hello Strava Users!

We love hearing what our users want to see on Strava in the future, but be sure to remember that none of the ideas and requests listed here are guaranteed to be implemented. This is only a fun feature on our Support site to gauge user input on various ideas. We so appreciate your feedback, and the more comments and votes on this particular request the better.

I don't have more specific information to pass along at this time, but we regularly share the activity on these forums with the Product team, so please keep the feedback coming.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Elle. When is the next scheduled Support-Product sharing session? Please post the results of the discussion of this issue.

Very few people follow these forums. If Strava really wants comments and votes from the membership on this issue, please post on FB a note explaining the issue and requesting feedback, with a link to this forum. (I did so, but of course it disappeared immediately, since only the page owner is permitted to generate a new thread. I imagine that it was captured by the FB moderator, if you want to use it as a template.)

  • Appreciate your thoughts on gaining more feedback in these forums, Richard. I'm not sure if we have considered using our Facebook page in this way. We have an awful lot of feature suggestions! However, I will pass this idea along to our social media team.

We will be sharing insights about feature suggestions with the product team this month. Thanks!

  • +1, I personally don't understand why Garmin only allows three selections (Sat/Sun/Mon), I really think it should be any day based on individual preference.  By the time you implement 2 days a week, or 3 like Garmin now has, might as well do them all for those people with *odd* work schedules (I used to have 2 days in the middle of the week off, so I started my routines on Thursday as I like to *end* my week with my long workout, I could then do that on my days off.)  Just my .02 if this is going to ever really happen, do it better than Garmin has for a selling point.

  • Agreed - The entirity of Europe works on a Monday as the start of the week, with saturday/sunday as the weekend (clue in the name), however the functionality to select which day of the week you wish your personal training week to start on would be beneficial.

  • Strava Support,

It's been two months since the promised sharing session with the product team. Please update the status of this issue.

I just downgraded my account, which will take effect at the end of my current paid subscription. I will renew my Premium account when I have the option to start my training week, monthly calendar display, and any other calendar-based features, on Sunday.

  • Mine just downgraded as well, and no plans to upgrade until Sunday/Monday start of the week is an option.  Thanks!

  • There is no reason to lobby, however emphatically, for a Monday start; that opportunity already exists. Some of the rest of us would like the option to start our training schedules on Sunday (or some other day), or at least display the calendar as is customary in our culture. That would do those of you who like to start on Monday no harm, but would be of some benefit to the rest. "There is no reason to change because I already have what I want" will come home to roost when the shoe is on the other foot. I would like to think that we would be gracious enough to lobby for the option that you would want, should the opportunity present itself. The operative word here is "option."

Meanwhile, no response from Strava. :(

  • Yes, please allow Sunday week starts.  All my long runs in my entire 20 yr history of running have occurred on Sundays.  Every training log I've ever kept, be it hardware or software (yes, Excel has been used) it was easy to set up the week to start on a Sunday.  Having a low mileage all week, but knowing the last day of the week will add a bunch, is a bit disconcerting, and a significant annoyance.  I've quit other versions of training logs for less.  Please!
