  • And now for something completely outside the box... How about any day of the week or even THE LAST SEVEN DAYS. What a concept. I can't believe someone actually spent a lot of time and money building a database with reports and never considered this. What were they thinking?

  • I guess they weren't thinking and now won't admit it. So we went from stupidity to stubbornness.

  • +1 for option to start my calendar on Sunday.

I'm with @Richard M, the lack of response here is head-scratchingly bizarre; does Strava have no program managers or customer advocates on board at all?

A simple "this request is #1099 out of 2030, it is projected to be completed in 2017" would suffice, even if just a wild-ass guess generated by rolling dice.

I tweeted @strava directly let's see if that gets a response.

  • Well they do have a customer advocate here, her name is Elle (there are a few others but she seems to be the most active). However it seems her role is to write affirming nondescript statements rather than relay direct feedback between user and development team. So rather than helping, it creates the environment that we were all directed to this forum with our ideas to be dumped into a quaint repository with a groomer on the side to make us feel good, though nothing is truly happening. While I am sure this is not exactly correct, it is how it feels after a while on simple issues like this one. Rather than a pleasant affirming response, I am sure we would all much rather a true response as Quentin mentioned: "this will never happen, sorry guys". Or, " this made the list but is xxx out of xxxxx, so it's going to be a long wait."

  • @Elle: Now that you have offered a slightly more substantive response in the Manually Add a Photo to an Activity thread, perhaps you could do the same in this thread. It would be appreciated.

My Premium membership expires in a week, and as noted above, I do not intend to renew it until there is some action on this issue. I will miss lists filtered by age group. I will not miss heat maps (a meaningless red spider web centered on my house), effort comparisons (meaningless for training rides and commutes, and I already know who has better sprint power than I in races and sustained power in TTs), or the myriad of other cool features that the Product Team has deemed more essential than the basic functionality that competitors offer as routine.

Why has no Product Team manager ever offered comment in the support forums? From the outside, it appears that Strava views them as meaningless gripe sinks. Success does not lie in that direction.

  • @Elle, any updates on your end?

  • Yes, I have some updates for the thread here:

We're are working on some very exciting new features and improvements, but the feature enhancement here isn't among them. We appreciate your feedback, but please understand that we simply do not have the bandwidth to incorporate each and every user suggestion into our product. Ideas like this will still exist in the "product backlog" where they can be prioritized at some later time when development allows.

  • Thank you for the honest and non-patronizing, informative reply. This is the kind of information sharing from the development team that actually makes us feel that we are heard and replied to, even if it is not the answer we want.

  • It's not worth my time and effort to keep my account and stats updated on an app or site that is not responsive to the customers needs, even if it is free. My time is valuable and I need to know that there will be growth and future support as the devices and my training needs change. I don't get that impression from Strava. As an example, I now have no doubt that Strava will be far behind others in adopting to Apple's IOS 8 healthkit. Other apps that I use already have adopted today with new versions. In order to get my business and possibly premium membership dues, a company needs to be ahead of me in development and support, not behind.

  • This is a major bummer, and as a software developer myself that works on stuff like this -- adding a preference to allow the user to view their week according to preference should be a very minor feature to add. It changes nothing in data structures, data collection, etc. It changes database queries and display. Sunday is the first day of the week, Saturday is the seventh day of the week. Virtually every other calendar I encounter adheres to this organization:

    - my computer (Mac OS X) calendar

    - project management

    - time and billing

    - diet tracking

    - finances

    - business

    - schools

etc. To just up and mandate in the system that a user tracks their exercise differently seems pretty ridiculous. If you are going to offer only one option, offer the standard, not the exception. Best answer -- let the user decide.

  • I live in US but I'd like to keep Monday as start of the week when calculating weekly mileage. Strava, if you decide to change this, make it an option please.
In general, Strava should offer to mix metric and imperial units the way user prefers. For example, I prefer imperial units for run distance, pace, and elevation and metric units for everything else.

  • I too would like to manipulate the calendar.  For instance I have started a 10 week program and the way the workouts fall and my work schedule it works best for me to start the workout week on Tuesday and end the following Monday.  You should be able to start your calendar week at any point it is still a 7 day week.

  • I was thinking about this a little more, and while it seems most people want to start their weeks on Sunday, like most of the human race has done since the beginning of time (including me), there's actually another reason why it makes sense to make it configurable. People who are training for competitive events, like century or double-century rides, or Ironman races, etc. may want to start their weeks by counting 7 days back from the day of the week on which the event occurs, so they have even, round weeks on which to plan their training and tapering down to the exact day of the race. As this is primarily a function of how a user wants to view their own, private data, and requires no changes whatsoever to writing data, this is basically a read-only reporting function, and shouldn't be that difficult to add.

  • Bradley O. - Most of the replies in this thread may want the week to start on Sunday but I would make two points in response to that. Firstly, this is an English-speaking forum and US views therefore predominate. Secondly, you're not likely to have much participation in this thread from people who are happy with the current default!

  • Dave -- I'm not sure I follow what your point is. What would be the point of trying to court and convince people who don't have the problem? I'm not looking to have a round-table discussion about the issue, I just try not to be a complainer, and with any shortcoming or issue give sensible support for the problem, and propose a solution which demonstrates to the Strava folks why this is a good idea.

  • Bradley - I fully agree that it should be configurable. I just disagree with your assertion that most people want their week to start on Sunday. It's a side issue really. If your assertion is based on the comments in this thread, I would argue that you are not seeing a very representative sample of "most people". This thread is (a) in English and (b) unlikely to be read by those who are happy with Monday. If Europeans and other Mondayites participated in this thread, the case for Sunday would be a lot less strong.

  • @ Dave and @Bradley,

Please read the entire thread, so that your comments don't rehash old misstatements and non-issues. The case is not for Sunday vs. Monday; it is to be able to choose the start day of one's own training calendar. It is clear that most non-North-Americas start their calendars on Monday. It is equally clear that most North Americans start their calendars on Sunday. Neither is correct, except in a local sense. Some commenters would like to start their calendars on days other than Sunday or Monday. The title of the thread starts with the word "Option." Option means the ability to make an alternative selection, not change the default behavior.

Having said that, it is clear from the time duration of this thread, and the lack of meaningful action or comment from Strava engineering or product management, that they are not concerned about this issue. Since it would be trivial to implement, as a X-feature if necessary, one is left to conclude that Strava management view more glitzy features (for example, heat maps and minifeeds) as more likely to lead to an exit than responding to customers. And while Elle is extremely friendly, the direction she is given makes it clear that non-response responses are acceptable to Strava management. So if you don't like it, vote with your feet, as many have done. I will re-establish my Premium membership when I have the option to set the start day of my calendar.

  • @Dave -- I made no assertions about what most people "want'; I made a statement based on what the first day of the week IS. The actual first calendar day of the week isn't preference -- since the beginning of the 7-day week, Sunday has always been the first day of the calendar week. Sure, others choose to run their businesses, or organizations, or finances otherwise, starting their week on a different day (just like organizations choose to observe a fiscal year different from the calendar year). But that only serves to make my point...make it configurable and completely up to the user....which is what @Richard in his attempt to tell me to re-read the thread somehow didn't apparently read that I had posted exactly what he was saying. Make it configurable, to any day. So if, for example, someone works an odd shift that puts their 2-day "weekend" on Wednesday and Thursday, and thus they base their training on a 7-day period starting on Friday, they can do that.

  • @Richard -- I neglected to answer one point you made: a few weeks ago, I did indeed downgrade my Premium Strava account back down to the free version, specifically because of:

    1. This issue of not being able to change the weekly period and display your activities accordingly.
    2. The inability to edit your activity mileage, which basically eliminates all mileage I put in during the winter or hot AZ summers on the treadmill, stationary bike, or wind trainer. It makes my "premium" Strava which has a fee less useful for tracking workouts than free Garmin. It also makes any monthly challenges pointless.

I highly prefer Strava. But until these features are added back, I won't be continuing with a premium Strava subscription.

  • I appreciate the periodic updates from the Community Support team.  Tough situation at times I'm sure.    Unfortunately until Strava lets its subscribers pick weeks to start on Sunday if they choose, this service can only be "just for fun" for me.  Some neat things, but I'll have to rely on my Garmin for training.   Weeks that start on Sunday are so prevalent in the running community that Strava missed a pivotal data point with its current Monday orientation.  Strava's community is good but looking past the bells and whistles - the business model seemed to be about data aggregation in a way that's usable.    I sure hope that the product development team has in its plans for 2015 something where the data fields Strava acquires are well aligned with the popular devices used by serious cyclists and runners.  Bottom line is that it's not aligned and should be.

  • Its very unfortunate that the Strava team is not listening to their members. This feature has been requested for a very long time now.  Strava, are you there?!  As a Premium Member, I would like to see this feature implemented, or at least listened to, neither of which has been the case here.

  • I noticed today a web gadget on the manual entry page, it has a calendar pop-up when entering dates which has <drumroll> weeks starting with Sunday:

  • Love Strava because its free and relatively simple to use but it does not make it perfect. I for one would prefer Strava's week to begin on a Sunday, but its not the end of the world if it starts on a Monday.

  • The option should be to select any day, not just Sunday or Monday, as the first day of the week. Your start day in some cases is a personal preference influenced by work schedule, training time, and family and other leisure activities. • A Monday start being the only option is pretty poor. Stava - please make it so we can set week start whenever we want, certainly A Saturday or Sunday as well as your current Monday.

  • Hard to believe that this still hasn't been addressed after all this time.  Just became  a Strava user after using mapmyride and not being able to designate the day the week starts on is a huge disappointment.

Submitted a request for this and was told to post here instead. They should at least acknowledge the request and explain why it hasn't been implemented.

  • I agree that the option to start on a Sunday would be great. I am going to have to re-write my half marathon training program to accommodate the Monday start.... ugh
