Better Multisport/Triathlon support and features

Please leave us your comments, ideas, and feedback here regarding better support of multi-sport activities on Strava.

As things currently stand, some multisport devices will segment out the different activity types in to separate pages (swim/bike/run) when uploaded to Strava. Sometimes, however, an entire multisport file will upload as one activity page - presenting problems with choosing an activity type, achievements, and training stats. We currently don't have many features specifically designed for triathletes, but would love to hear your ideas. What multisport features and functions would you love to see on Strava in the future?

Thanks!

  • That's really disappointing that 6 years later there's still no support for multisport.

I think this was already brought in discussion but anyway. I would suggest idea of so called "superactivity" which is indeed a container for several activities. Besides multisport this can be easily used, for example, for grouping multi-day hiking/backpacking, etc. Basically for anything user wants to group for some reason.

There are some points to consider:

    1. How to create?

Both automatic way when exporting from device (fit/tcx) and manual way should be supported. If doing manually an empty activity is created. User should be able to add or remove activities from superactivity. Removing does not delete activity itself but rather makes it "standalone" usual activity.

    2. How to display in feed?

Again I would suggest to display superactivity only to not spam the feed with its children activities. Map in the feed should display tracks all all activities merged. Total distance is sum of all distances, same for time.

    3. How to view activity.

When user gets into activity he/she sees somewhat what's currently in Lap view mode, except these are not laps but activities. When you click on certain activity you can open it as usual.

Glad if this helps or useful.

  • It is a total joke that this thread has been going on for this long and Strava just doesn't make any effort to implement these changes. Multi-sport is an absolute must and if Strava wants to be a serious cycling and running and triathlon platform, rather than just a segments competition platform they really need to get around to do this and hear their user base.

  • In 2012 you asked about input. And five (!!!) years later there is still no valid multi-sport support in Strava.

    Really?

Close this thread and just admit, that it's either not paying off (because users buy Strava accounts anyway), or you just dont't manage to come up with a proper solutions.

For my part: going back to regular account. No more money from me.

  • I recently started doing Swimrun and I have bought a Garmin Fenix 5 to log my activities.  During one activity I may switch between running and swimming up to 20 times or more. The watch has a feature to log everything in one activity but unfortunately Strava logs all the 20 parts as separate activities. Swimrun is growing fast as a sport and I see lots of people with Garmin watches, that probably have the same issue. Please add support for multisport and cooperate with Garmin to make this work!

  • YES. We wanted multisport support 5 years ago and we still want it now. Just get on with it!

  • Wow, original post from 2012 and still not done! It looks like Strava is not developping at all.

  • I'd just like to add my wish for Strava to accept 'multsport' files as intended from Garmin devices.

Right now, I upload to Garmin Connect and everything is nicely contained within one activity (bike, run and transitions) with the relevant data for each (power for bike, pace for run etc.) but then Strava takes the file and splits it. Tonight, I did a brick training session; 4x 1k runs, 4x 4k bike and instead of one neat file that I get on Garmin - I get 11 separate activities on Strava (4x run, 4x ride and 3x transition)!

Big fan of Strava but this is one of the few areas where Garmin Connect is way ahead.

I raised a ticket and was told to simply use one activity (e.g. bike) but then I lose the ability to gain meaningful data from my training - power and none bike related metrics etc.

  • I imagine that for each upload, I could click a "multisport" button, then a "+" button until it has the right number of activities/segments, then use a slider (similar to the one in segment creation) to select which part of the activity was each activity, and finally a possibility to select activity type for each part of the activity (i.e. ride, ice skate, ride for the three parts of my activity last night).

This would be quite simple to make and simple to use; better than today when we usually have to edit the GPX file manually or use 10 seconds to manually push stop, reset and start for every transition.

They could show up as linked activities in the dashboard, in a similar way to group rides today.

Maybe there could be a summary page for the common parts (time, distance, heart rate and so on) but that's certainly a lower priority than "split into several activites in a simple way" as described above.

  • I would give 2 options to the user. One to group activities together...by creating a multisport activity (triathlon, duathlon...) as a main activity in which I would be able to add individual activities that have been uploaded individually...aThe other option would be to change the sport of a main activity (from Run to Triathlon for example), and to associate a specific activity to the different lap of the main activity (Lap 1 would be changed from Run to Swim, Lap 2 would be changed from Run to Transition 1, Lap 3 would be changed from Run to Bike, Lap 4, would be changed from Run to Bike....

    Hoping this make sense.

  • Mu suggestion would be the following :

    1. Create a new activity called "Multisport"

    2. Simply have tabs inside your activity, be it "Run, Bike Run" or "Swim, Bike, Run"....

This will avoid spamming your dashboard with multiple events. Most sports watches (Fenix 3 in my case) do have quick switch functions when doing a triathlon for instance, including transitions. So it is saved as a single event on the watch, simply split it like the watch does in separate tabs.

  • wow, this topic is from 4 years ago where strava asks for ideas and input and after all the feedback there is still nothing???

In any case, today I've done my first xduathlon so I can share my experience and what would help me.

I used one device to record the whole event so I ended up with one track.  I wanted to press the lap button but in the heat of the moment forgot about it :(

Now that I have my activity in strava, wouldn't it be the easiest if you could just point out on the track where you switched from one activity into the other?  Thats all, you then indicate what activity the first one is and what the next one is etc..

With this indication, strava can deal with each activity type as if it was a completely separate activity.  As a user you choose wich activity you want to look at and then you get all your stats data about it.

Seems pretty simple and a good first start.  Sorry if it was already suggested, I didn't go and read through the many posts.

  • I agree with what many people on here think. I think the way Strava handles multisport activities from my Garmin is poorly done. Often times, I do brick workouts where I switch back and forth from my bike to a run 5 or 6 times. This means that upwards of 10 different activities are added to my feed and this spams both mine and my followers feeds. Consolidating a multisport activity into one activity and then being able to look at each individual leg inside of that would be a WAY better way to do things. This is how it is organized on Garmin Connect. Its simpler and I don't spam my followers feeds with 11 workouts in 2 hours.

  • This thread is frustrating.. I've posted on a similar thread for Apple Watch 2 Support for Swimming. Yes!!! Please add multi sport features including swimming!!!!

Multi-sport is what got me on the bike in the first place and I love cycling, I love Strava, but it is so frustrating that my data can't all be properly accounted for on one platform. I'm super close to just closing my premium membership and starting up with Training Peaks.

How much feedback do you need?

  • I got Swimrun and triathlon and Brick sesions working on my Garmin but when its moved over to Strava its all separat activites. Would love to see the session as one with the total map...and at second level dive in to the details.

Garmin got it...would love to have the same in Strava...what I do now is I set all my Swimrun as Running.

  • I see that we can add the activity manually which is great but we still cannot upload it from the 910.  Can we expect this feature soon?

  • Dear Strava Team

This is just a bit of friendly feedback on the great work that you guys are doing

I was a premium member for a month but I have just downgraded my membership

I take part in Triathlons and swimming events as well as running an cycling ones

I would like to leave here my suggestion for future development to include stats for swimming in the dashboard

It would be also nice if Strava had the Triathlon as an activity category

    That was my feedback

All in all well done Strava Team and thank you for your support

    Regards
    Andre

  • Is possible to add a Multisport / Triathlon / duathlon metrics on strava? With the aim to see the sectors times and transitions...

    Thanks:

  • I think the key would be to allow for activities to be grouped. That way you could see the individual activities from a triathlon but also look at it as a whole.

This grouping could also be useful for bike rides and other actives where you might have done a longer pause / stop but then want to combine it as a whole.

  • I've asked the Strava team about this before and got an unsatisfactory response. Obviously strava needs to be able to hold the multipart data as individual event types (swim, bike, run) but I don't understand why they can't put a container around this data so that it appears on the feed as a single entry with multiple sports, including transitions.

If the reason for not doing this is due to the interface with the likes of Garmin etc then work with these people and sort it out.

Disappointingly training peaks has the same problem but that doesn't excuse it.

  • This is a must soon , its nice if triathlons would be one workout and worse is swimrun , now i have friends that posts 20+ activities / day since strava cant handle the multisport ..

To be honest, its a joke that Strava havent implemented this yet, i wont return to premium until they fix this and when they fix som a swim can be a race

  • They just don't care. Sadly. I've just cancelled my pro membership that I had since 2013. I thought it was a nice project and deserved support, but it seems they just don't care about what the community wants. Once they add the features that have been requested for more than half a decade (or at least tell us why they won't) I might reconsider.

  • Please work on the multisport activities. When you have such a great platform for Swimmers, bikers and runners and dont support triathlon its a little bit shame. One Race splitted into 5 activities will mess with dashboard. Also brick workouts will do the same. Swimrun is on the rise so its more then necessary to support it.

Thank you in advance for all triathletes and swimrunners.

  • @lucian and @andy. Strava doesn't really care for our input. All we get is their lousy: "we need to be selective and balance our priorities" canned response, which is a shame.

  • Wow.  Impressive.  Delete *honest* feedback that relfects your own responses to the community.  That's amazing.  Lets see -- Introduce a subscription, make it a 'reasonable' price,  and then ambush the entire community by trying to gouge on that by splitting it into 'separate feature packs'....Avoid feedback about what the community actually *needs* from the product....Tell them 'it's on our map, but it's not something we know when we will care about'  This sounds eerily familiar... Oh right, it's very similar to what Evernote did... and how did that work out for them?  Oh right... they have been struggling ever since and have been downsizing as a result.  Hmmm... notice that most of us are sick and tired of you guys beating around the bush, and *very* sick of the copy paste responses?  Thankfully, I have already started looking into your competitors that are starting to rise up.  Good job, Strava.  You started as #1, and you're slowly knocking yourself down :)  Brava.

  • Until we wait for the real multi-sport implementation, it would be nice if we can already at least select e.g. Triathlon as an activity. Now, we have to label them as either Run, Swim, or Ride (when recording the entire race as one activity). The ability to label those entire races as 'Triathlon' would already be an improvement.
