Xbox-style achievements/milestones for notable Strava activity

I submitted this to the ticketing system (which is the starting point for formal feature requests). The response was appreciative but they said it was a direction they weren't looking to go right now. They suggested I post in the general forums to gauge interest. So that's what I'm doing here.

KOMs / segments are terrific, but it would be cool to implement xbox-like achievements and accrue "strava points" or something like that. This is separate from KOMs / segments and would be per-individual.

Examples:

  • "'Monthly 1,000' - Ride 1,000 miles (or km) in a month" (40 points)
  • "'Century' - Complete a ride of at least 100 miles." (25 points)
  • "'Polka Dot' - Complete a category 4 [or 3, 2, 1, HC] climb" (5 points)
  • "'Usurper' - Oust someone's KOM/QOM on a segment with at least 10 competitors" (5 points)
  • "'Wall Climber' - Complete a categorized climb with at least 13% grade" (10 points)
  • "'Eww, Roads' - Complete a ride with at least 1 segment without touching a road." (5 points)
  • "'Eww, Mud' - Complete a ride with at least 1 segment without going off road." (5 points)
  • "'Mile High Club' - Climb at least 5,280 feet on a ride." (10 points)
  • "'Time Trialer' - Average at least 20mph on a ride >10 [or whatever] miles." (10 points)
I think this would make Strava even more competitive and add a fun, new dynamic to its already competitive nature (and possibly make it even more addictive than it already is, if that's possible).

Thoughts?

  • Hello all, I was just about to post this very suggestion in the Request for Assistance section. As an avid PC/console gamer I'm wired to relish the challenge of achievements and was surprised and delighted to see the level of interest here. I think the ideas posted above are fantastic and would be a really nice way for us to push ourselves to do a little more than we really wanted to each time we went for a ride.

I sincerely hope Strava give this some serious thought. Cheers.

  • Great idea. Similar to Epic Mix for skiing / snowboard @ Vail Resorts.

  • Good idea:

"Globe Trekker" - log Strava activities on X number of continents.

  • Please please please Strava, consider adding this into your development schedule.

I blogged about this sort of thing a while back, and came up with some new ideas to extend the concept.

    http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/2012/12/strava-give-us-more-achievements/

There is definitely a shelf life with just KOM's, and this would massively extend people's interest.

You have only to look at Xbox games like Battlefield to see how long term accumulator style achievements can really extend people's involvement with the product. It''s an additional layer of motivation.

Also, a badge for each state you've rode or ran in would be nice.

  • And out of a sudden not clear to me why this feature isn't there since ever ... STRAVA DO IT! (I said "please")

  • And another one where I'm confused there hasn't been a comment from Strava. This feature easily could grab in new users to the platform. Easy free PR.

  • After reading the Ironman Challenge idea (https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/23169994-Ironman-Challenge-for-t...) I think this of x-box style achievements is great. Segments are great but they are very one dimensional.  (because lets be honest after a while chasing segments gets a little boring). Cycling is such a colourful sport and strava should reflect that variety. Think of it more like a physical game with different goals that you can complete at anytime in your cycling lifetime. This is some of my ideas.

You could have overall lifetime badges.

    a. Ride 100km's, 500km, 1000km, 2500km, 5000km, 10,000km, 25,000km, 50,000km, 100,000km, etc
    b. Climb 1000m, 2500m, etc
    c. Spend 10hour on your bike, 50hours, 100hours, 1000hours, etc.

Then you could do a similar things that are based on length of time.

    a. Ride 50km, 100km, 500km in a week. (and similarly for a day or month or year lengths with obviously different distances)
    b. Climbing 500m, 1000m, 10000m in a week (and again for a day or month or year)
    c. Time spent in a saddle. (again for day, week, and month, year lengths)

Then you could do badges based on consistency.

    a. Ride every day of a week for a whole week.

    b. Ride every week in a month.

    c. Ride every day in a month.

    d. Ride every month in the year. (which in cold countries this could be a real challenge)

    e. Ride every week in a year.

    f. Then you could add distance and/or climbing as other options. (ie. bike 100km's every day for 3 days in a row).

Then you could do badges based on special things.

    a. Bike 30km at 30km/h solo, or 100km at 30km/h

    b. Ride 100km with three friends.

    c. Climb the height of Everest in a day or a week.

    d. Cycling the distance around the world. (what would be cool is if it should a virtual map of the world and showed you were you would be if you actually did cycle around the world)

    e. Then you could take the Ironman idea mentioned above, and have other options. (ie. do any three sports in a day), complete a triathlon.

The idea would be that there would be hundreds if not thousands of different badges that you could earn and showcase in your trophy case. Some would be very easy, and some would take a lifetime of awesome biking. I'm sure other people could come up with some other interesting combinations that would be fun. It would add an element of fun to Strava.

  • Hi,

I agree with what has been said in the previous post, it would be really cool to have many hidden achievements to unlock through your Strava life without the need to join a specific challenge, which would still remain and be another concept. The idea is very similar to what Foursquare used to do in their previous version with the concept of badges.

And don't forget to make achievements for any type of activities, not only riding.

  • With Strava's recent capital raising this should be high on the 'To Do' list.  Would prefer it was not a premium item though.....

It would be especially good since as I get older the ability to improve on segments is deminishing so another way to get achievements would be a good incentive to keep using Strava.

  • I came here to post this as my own original idea.  Too late!

    I thought:

Globetrotter - record activities in x number of different countries

Streak - Record x amount of days in a row

I'm sure there would be thousands of different ones.
