Tag a friend and add them to an Activity

I have only been using Strava for a couple of weeks, so this is a beginner question. A friend and I are following each other on Strava already. We ran this afternoon, but only he recorded it in Strava. I am trying to find out if it is possible to "tag" me in that run so it will be a part of my profile and stats?

  • This feature is a must... The only thing that is keeping me from using this as my dedicated app.

  • Ron Gauthier wrote on October 30: Turns out this feature already exists. Go to the ride you want to duplicate in activities, on the left hand side you will see a wrench that says Actions, go to "export GPX". Download the gpx file of your ride and send it to the person who was on the ride. They can then upload the GPX file and the ride will be theirs. Simple.
You will need a premium account to use this feature. Why won't Strava respond to this if so many want this feature?

  • I disagree Sjoerd V. Duplicating a GPX is not tagging. This is simple feature that shouldn't demand any GPX handling.

We just want Strava to keep it simple and allow tagging.

  • Thanks for all the great feedback.

I've posted some tips on how to share an activity with a friend on Strava.

We are working on some sort of mention tagging on Strava, but at this time it's not clear if it will include the sharing of activities across multiple accounts.

In the meantime, please keep the feedback coming.

  • if they implement this. Less people would buy a bikecomputer... A market that's currently exploding. (thanks to $TRAVA)

  • Elle, add my voice to your developing idea.  This happened to me yesterday.  What I need is to take my riding buddy's route data and have the option to adjust some of the other criteria like how long it took, then perhaps have your excellent engine reerse-engineer some approximation of my power and calories as a function of what Strava knows about me already.  Or something.  Really I need the accurate route and accurate distance for my longer-term log.  Thanks in advance.

  • I'm a bit late to the party on this so it may have been mentioned and answered before, but if you tag someone on a ride which I assume means uses all of your ride data, wont they then also have matching segment times, KoM's/ QoM's, PB's etc? Unless they ride right next to you for the entire journey both uphill and down, there is no way the segment data will be the same. The start and stop time of the ride might be the same, but everything else in between will usually be different.

  • Quick reminder: There are essentially two issues being discussed / touted here.

    1) a simple 'tag' to say "me too" / "I was there" / "A was there but didn't record the ride/device failed", very much like the current system that shows "+1" when the system determines another rider was with you, but instead adding that other rider manually but without any stats.  This would then show in your/their profile and, more importantly, linked with the other rider/riders (otherwise you could just add a manual entry)

    2) copy the stats from the other ride - this is already possible (export.import GPX) but gives you the same stats as that other rider (Q/Kom / etc) which, IMO, is completely pointless as that wasn't your ride and the main reason 1) is more useful.  There's some variation on this (which is probably why it keeps popping up) as it would be useful to copy over _general_ details about the ride such as length/duration/elevation gain without specific gpx detail - this would be useful while still linking to the other rider(s).

  • Working in a company where we do group runs all the time, but only one person or two have gps watches, I can't say how much we need this feature. We were using Runkeeper where this was possible very easily, so we were quite disappointed that it wasn't possible in Strava. It would definitely make my task of convincing the other colleagues to join much easier! Thanks for the hard work and a great product :-)

  • Laura - they don't need a GPS watch etc, just about everyone these days has an iDevice of some type that they can use the Strava app on if that is all that is required to get someone out for a run.

  • Oh yes, I know, but it's easier if they don't need to carry anything on them, smartphones these days are quite big (that's another advantage of having a proper watch)...

  • This needs to happen. I went out with a friend this morning and the auto-group tagging didn't work (again)... Please please please fix...

  • Yes, would very much like to be able to tag riding partners after a ride.

I use Fitbit to load my data to Strava. My normal riding buddy uses his Garmin watch. Since neither of us use the app directly, it never appears as if we've been riding together.

Not ideal, but I lose the HR monitor feature if I use Fitbit directly, at least until I get a compatible HR monitor.

Still, since the route data all gets loaded, it would be nice to be able to tag other users, regardless of whether they use Strava ap directly to log their miles.

  • Yes please, we need this functionality. Come on Strava, are you all out for a very very very long ride, or why haven't you answered since 2013?

  • This is a perfect 'pay for it' function, you know only available to users that have paid accounts. Seems foolish to not be able to do this. To be clear I'm not talking about sharing all the segment stats it wouldn't make sense, only some high level overall stats; distance, time, speed. I can hear the purest developers now; but it's not 'your' time! Yeah well some folks aren't that pure, those that are always bring their own equipment. I for one have a paid account not because I'm some crazed trainer but rather because I just like a nice product and am willing to speak with my Dosh, yet today I'm sitting here with 60 some fewer miles on my board for last week because I cannot tag (or whatever language) myself into a ride.

  • I'm guessing the issue is that Strava knows about a person's presence on a route through their ride/run data, i.e. the relationship between person A and person B having shared an activity is derived indirectly by matching closely their recordings. If Strava adds direct linking of A to B via A's activity X, that can potentially introduce a number of nontrivial edge cases. Suppose B uploads the shared activity later on; should the explicit "B rode with A" relationship be removed? What if the route-matching system matches A's and B's recordings? What if it doesn't? In either of those cases, what happens if A later untags B from their ride?

It is a simple thing to ask for, but sometimes it is exactly the simplest user-facing functionality that takes weeks or months of detailed work to productize properly. And it may already be on Strava's backlog or roadmap; so, let's keep adding plusses here and up the priority of this feature request ;)
