Manually add Training Load to activities for Fitness & Freshness graph

It would be very helpful to be able to add manual TSS estimates to rides. I live in a pretty brutal winter climate and don't risk bringing my crank-mounted power meter on some of the more snow-ridden, submerged, occasionally airborne training rides I do in the winter, so when I return from a 5 hour frostbitten epic I don't really have a good assessment of what the effect on my fatigue/fitness would be. It'd be handy to be able to punch in some kind of guess so I can better keep track of my fitness curves. Just a thought.

Thanks!

  • +1.

Once in a blue moon, I lose training data from my Garmin.  It would be nice to estimate my TSS - I usually know my ride average power, length, mileage, which should be enough to get in the ballpark for a long ride.  I lost 100 miles of hard training rides this weekend - they would have bumped my fitness (and fatigue) up substantially.

  • +1. While you're at it, please provide an option to see weekly total training load (like you have for distance or time) so we don't have to keep adding it up manually. Would be very easy I'm sure. From a training point of view it's much more important to see cumulative training stress than raw distance/time. Tony

  • Hi Elle,

That's great, and it is very helpful.  I can already see that my F&F graph is more like I expect, with the missing numbers (from when my PM was stolen) filled in.

I don't mean to nitpick - however what we're asking for in this particular thread is the ability to override Training Load manually (whether we override PM derived score, or HR derived score).  There are a few good reasons to want to do this: First, I don't use my HR or PM when I race, but they are substantial efforts that I'd like to have tracked in F&F.  Second, there can be rides where either HRM or PM might fail or give bogus data, and a manually overridden value might be closer to the truth.  Finally - I am a little suspect of the Training Load values that are coming out of the HR estimates, and I believe I can do better with my own estimate in some cases*.  Again, I'm not being negative on the ability to use HR to estimate Training Load, that's great and it'll do for my bulk of rides without PM data.  But we also see it as essential, if the F&F feature is to be useful and held up against TrainPeaks, that we have to ability to override inputs into the F&F data.

    * Here are 2 rides that were similar in time, distance, nature, effort, intensity, average speed, and average HR.  One was done before I recovered my PM, and one was done after.  They are separated by 2 weeks in time.  The Training Load estimated in the non-PM ride (http://www.strava.com/activities/195402636/overview) is 90 (note that the estimated Training Load doesn't show up on the activity's page, you have to go to F&F to see it; it would be nice to have a field for Estimated Training Load on the activity page) and the Suffer Score is 76.  The Training Load (from PM) for the PM ride (http://www.strava.com/activities/201551969/overview) is 141, and the Suffer score is 84.  So while the Suffer Score says that the PM ride was approx. 10% "harder", the Training Load is approx 56% higher for the PM ride.  Again, this is no big deal, I appreciate that there is a lot of inference that has to go into estimating TSS from HR.  However, this is an example where I'd like to override the estimated Training Load, to get better representation in the F&F graph.

    Thanks,

    Rich

  • I agree with Rich Greieve.  Although this is a step in the right direction, it is not what we asked for.

Let's say I go out of town and sit on a spin bike for an hour and do some intervals. I don;t have any heart rate or other data to download.  Or, as happened to me recently, my Garmin crapped out and was replaced under warranty, causing me to lose data for five workouts including a hard century and a long race.  Not only are these workouts lost, but the F and F is not accurate going forward. for weeks to come. What we really want is to be able to estimate the training load and just plug it in as a method of last resort, either instead of or in addition to the latest solution..

in any event,. thanks for listening to your customers.

  • Another vote for manual TSS/Sufferscore entry.

Signed up for premium based on access to the F&F graph and Sufferfest videos.
We no longer have Sufferfest, and the F&F graph is somewhat flawed without ability to estimate training load for workouts where we don't have access to the data.

  • This is really basic functionality for Fitness and Freshness to be useful. Not every workout is going to have HR or Power available and without every workout entered, Fitness and Freshness is wildly inaccurate to how fatigued your body really is.

  • totally agree, the chart is of little use if you can't record all your training

  • Yes please, just did a 2 days race and on the second day my heartrate monitor did not work and now it looks like I have had a rest day. It has effected my fitness bu about 5%. It should have gone up but went down.

  • It's daft people are having to do workaround by editing fit files. Other sites like TodaysPlan allow me to enter the TSS manually. How hard can it be?

  • Agreed, this seems so simple. It makes one of the featured premium features totally useless. I did a ride with my PM Friday and a spin class Saturday where Strava failed me on two levels: can't record indoor ride/HR on mobile app, and then can't manually enter TSS - there goes any somewhat accurate charting.. Love Strava but getting frustrated how many of the features I think are no brainers for premium members have been up here for years and almost all have "not on the list" responses.. What premium features ARE you working on would be my question...

  • +1 would like to add for cross training/rowing when garmin doesn't sync correctly, even if the HR data is captured.

  • Should be basic stuff to add this feature and as said previously would make the fitness data more accurate.

  • One should be able to add TSS/TrainingLoad/Power etc for a ride/activity not (able) to record with Strava. Without it no way to keep the Fitness and Freshness card accurate. FTP changes can't be linked to a date as well.  As mentioned above this should be included in the premium feature! Looking into Xert, Golden Cheetah and Trainingpeaks to spent my Strava-premium money after 4,5 years...

  • I have found a small "work-around" (but unfortunately not helpful for all cases mentioned here): I realized that I used in the past my Apple Watch to document my visits to the gym where I usually do 1h riding on a bike. The events are synced automatelly with Apples Health App. Unfortunately I cannot upload events from "Health" to "Strava". So far so good.

Now I found another App called HealthFit which allows me to do exactly that. HealthFit syncs with Health and I can upload my trainings from HealthFit to Strava. The calculated calories seem to be reasonable and the heart rate is transferred very well from the AppleWatch to Health to HealthFit and finally to Strava.

I am aware, that this is very specific. But it helped me to bring my old trainings into Strava and my visits to the gym. I don't know if there is a comparable application like HealthFit on Android which takes inputs from other fitness tracker. But it is perhaps worth looking for it.

  • Premium Member since 2012. Downgraded a few years back switching to Traingin Peaks for better TSS handling. Upgraded today, checked the F & F and downgraded again. Staying with Training Peaks ...

  • Agree with everyone here.

Please add this feature!! Manual TSS seems so obvious and so easy. Zwift stuffed up, I add the ride manually, but no TSS.

  • Hi

Is there an updated status on this?

I would like to enter training load for a manually created activity. I sometimes forget my computer or HR-monitor, but I still have a fairly good estimate as to the training load - and it would certainly be better than the "0" that is the option now.

  • It'd be great to have this feature. Living in the UK, the nights are dark and the weather is atrocious so I've opted to move my road bike inside and now ride it frequently on the indoor trainer. The only problem is that I see my fitness graph has plumetted. I still track my distance, speed, power etc indoors and would love to see how this fairs against my overall fitness / freshness

  • Not going to lie. I'm pissed this isn't a feature. I also subscribe to Sporttracks as their F&F variant is a little different and I like to compare the two. But tonight was the first time I had to enter this data in manually and I couldn't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is literally worth canceling my subscription over. It's only been 4 years. Get on it or I'm done.

  • Is this being revisited?  I really don't want to buy a polar watch for my swim.  I get TRIMP scores from Golden Chetah from my swim using my Garmin Fenix 3HR and Garmin swim HRM.  I don't understand why Garmin swim HR is still not supported if it is in a free open source app like Golden Chetah.

  • I've downgraded from Premium/Summit/whatever they're calling it now. I'm still uploading my workouts but I'm actually putting my data into Sporttracks and using that as of official log. Strava is nothing more than facebook to me now, something I check out once in a while to see what friends are doing.

  • I have to say the lack of this feature is making me seriously consider whether I want to continue using Strava. One major activity that isn't recorded can really damage the utility of fitness and freshness. My last gran fondo wasn't recorded and now the chart is fairly inaccurate, saying that my fitness is languishing and that I am fully recovered, neither of which is true.

  • Yep, looks like they've put the functionality in the app at long last.  From initial looks, seems like a good job, but not had a need to test yet.   Shame they didn't keep people informed along the way.
