Walk Activity Suggestions for Strava

1. Create a new setting in the Run app so the default activity can be changed to something other than Run (e.g., Walk).

2. Create a new setting to allow a user to turn off the new annoying lock on the record button. That's not necessary for me since I already have a screen lock on my phone.

3. What happened to my ability to see my recorded walks tallied with my runs on both the website and in the app? It's great that 'runs' now only include 'runs' but I'd also like to be able to see how much hiking, walking, etc. I'm doing.

Thanks.

In general, we are working towards better support for walk activities!

In the past, Strava has focused it's features and functionality on only swim, bike and run activities. However, we know that our community is growing and uploading many other activities outside of these categories.

Walks on Strava will be included in planned development to offer other activity types when recording, and also to include more activities in your profile stats and goals.

    Stay tuned.

  • i agree i would like to still see my walking totals, also when doing a walk now you don't know what your time per mile is. if you use the cycling app you can set the activity to walk once you have finished the activity

    can this please be addressed?

  • Sorry, forgot mention a fourth feature I'd like to see added, which is the ability to change the default screen which appears when you first open the app.

For example, when I open the app I'd like to go immediate to record a run (or ride or walk, whatever my preference is).

  • i would agree with having exercise walks included. i dont run for joint health reasons but i walk - 5-8kmh. need to be able to separate walk data from others

  • I agree with the above and would like 2 types of walking to be added. 1. Walking, 2. Race Walking. As I am a competitive racewalker who also runs I would like to be able to differentiate my training between both activities. Also I would like to be able to select and record the shoes I am wearing aginst the racewalking activity type.

  • Thanks for the great feedback around our walk activity type! We realize this is also a very popular activity type in addition to just running and cycling. While we don't have any plans in the works to develop our walk activity features and functionality, but it's still useful to have this feedback and please know the Product team is aware of it.

  • Its great the product team is aware of the request - will they ever produce anything?   Or is there enough of a separation to have a different strava app for walking?

  • It's disappointing that you "don't have any plans in the works to develop our walk activity features and functionality," even though you get customers wanting it.  Interesting response.  I'm trying Premium and proper provision for walkers would encourage my continuation. In addition to that, I'd like the walking/running speed to be reported in distance per unit time, instead of time per unit distance.  Why is it so?  Odd.  I mean kmph or mph and not minutes per km or mile.  Or at least have an option to see it that way.

  • Hi Strava support,

It is clear there are a significant number of your users that are very interested in incorporating various walk type activities into you software. I'm sure the community agrees that any training program will include both high intensity and recovery activities of which walking may well play a part. Walking is often used as a low impact way of progressing / recovering from injury and is for many a stepping stone towards more challenging activities. Please consier again adding this as an activity type and allow a broader range of users/activites into your community - I'm sure this is a win/win scenario for all,

    Thanks, Ian

  • Besides running I also enjoy walking as an activity. But I cannot select "walk" and know it will be recorded. All my walks, no matter how brisk, are nowhere to be found in my weekly progress. Nor are they recorded as part of multi-activity. I feel like my many hours and miles of walking are lost as far as my recording goes. Is it possible to add this feature, which I believe is also a legitimate exercise activity?

  • I'd like "hiking" to be a default; so that I can select the shoe on my phone for running, and have it show up as hikes (at least on the website).

  • Still no ability to have my Strava default to 'walk' as my activity of choice? Actually it's my activity of necessity since I can't run or bicycle. I can't be the only one. With the aging population of the United States, I would think this would be something you should have added a long time ago.

I know I can manually change my activity to 'Walk' after the fact, but it seems so '5 years ago' to have to do this manually every day.

Having said that, thank you for your great app.

  • I was disappointed in 2014, more thantwo years ago, that whilst strive was aware of customers requirement for better walk functionality in the app, and I'm still disappointed. We can't set walk as a default, at the record screen you can choose run or ride but not walk, we can't choose different footwear for different activities on foot, and speed he still mysteriously quoted in Time per unit distance with no alternative.

I can't avoid the understanding that Strava is just not interested in developing the app for walkers.

  • It's now 2017, and it appears that Strava are still willing to fall behind in supporting the non-riding and non-running exercise communities.

Strava do so much very well, it could be so much more.

PLEASE find a little bit of development funds to improve features for walking and other non-ride/run sports.

Would Strava please allow weekly, monthly, and annual totals be displayed for whatever you choose your sport might be. If you kayak and hike, these limitations renders Strava nearly  useless.

My wife struggles to understand why I pay for a premium subscription, while her free app displays steps, total distance, km/hr and more (everything I wish Strava would develop).

  • I like many of the folk above,  do a lot of walking on my days off work. My shortest being 4.4 miles up to 9 miles from Friday to Monday. I am not able to run. I am a premium member, but I cannot find a way to retrieve my total number of walks I have done. Please help us walkers.

  • Strava:

Missing the walking end is a big boon lost for you. Believe me when I say that most people are not athletes in a professional sense. Walking is certainly part of an active life style, and tho not athletic per say, can lead to higher levels of activity. The few are the athletes, the many are the masses of us that just want to stay healthy and active. Please get in touch with reality. I walk now, and have started run/walk sessions on the very low end with the goal of running again. But in this real world I stand a chance of blowing my knees out again if I progress to fast. Sure the app was created for athletes, however i see many more just striving to stay healthy and your app needs so very little work to become what it needs to be for the purpose of walking. We are talking changing some lingo and adjusting a few perimeters. Opportunity is knocking, and guess what??? others are looking for other solutions. So the question is where will they spend their time and money?? If not here, it will soon be somewhere else.

  • I agree with Dale above. I too am a walker. My knees & back do not allow me to run any more.I became a premium member, but now I will look for another site once my membership expires. Lets face it, Stravs does not cater for us walkers.

  • Again. Please add Hike as a full feature option. At lease show daily and monthly totals. Also moving time for a hike is much less helpful than elapsed time

  • I suspect that once in a blue moon -- when nobody at Strava has anything better to do -- someone will reluctantly glance through the comments and maybe take notes on any earth-shaking suggestions. Otherwise, the forums just seem to be for venting frustrations. I would certainly like to see some of the suggested walking enhancements, but I'm not going to hold my breath.  Most of my workouts are trail runs, but when I'm in a city with only sidewalks and roads available for working out, I resort to speed walking.  Often I walk faster on those hard flat surfaces than I run on my hilly, winding trails; so it would be nice to be able to keep track of the walks in greater detail -- for example, which shoes I was wearing. After all, walking fast on concrete will wear out shoes just as fast as running on dirt trails, so if the idea is to keep track of shoe wear in order to know when to replace the shoes, it makes no sense to record mileage on shoes from running but not from walking.  Anyway, as mentioned, the forums seem to be only for venting frustrations, so I don't expect anything to come of this particular rant.

  • I have recently had major surgery therefore I am reduced to walking for recovery. It is discouraging and disappointing to see that all the walks I have been logging on Strava are not added to my daily training log/weekly totals as an activity and that my shoes aren't acknowledged. I see your official note dated October 2, 2017 that you maybe addressing this?? Please hurry, for the sake of my motivation. Thank you

  • As I have expressed above, us walkers/hikers fail to be recognized. When it comes to setting up Strava for a morning hike, all we have to choose from are running / cycling. Why can't a third selection be added, such as walk or hike. I am a premium member, but I am not treated as one. I am sure that Strava could make a minor IT adjustment to make us walkers/hikers on even footing as the running/cycling folk.

  • Have just found some relief from my frustration, even if short-lived. For my last three walks I tried something new. After ending my walk, and BEFORE hitting "Save", I changed my activity from the default "Run" to "Walk". Only then did I "Save". To my surprise my walk was saved accurately. I will test this every time to be sure it wasn't just by chance. Would like to know if others have tried this. Did you have success over the long haul?

  • I have always changed mine from run to walk, than save. But it still does not give you an overall total as the runners.
