Enable Satellite view for iOS Maps

You should be able to change the type of map that is displayed on iPhone, as when doing mountain biking you don't ride a road that is on a map and with satellite mapping the map would be more meaningful and easier to identify different segments.

  • Dear Elle Anderson, um.... So you "decided not to" incorporate satellite view into real time.

    May one ask why?

  • In other words the recording function is still Useless if you're a cyclist trying to follow new segments/routes in the forests?

The record screen is what we follow when riding! Do you guys actually ride and use the product?

or have I misread your comment?

  • Elle, Firstly thank you for replying- responding promptly is appreciated by your customers, even (especially) if the message is not what we want to hear. I guess that I finally realise that Strava is not the tool that I was hoping for and I will invest in Viewranger and have to import into Strava - if I can be bothered; which half the time I cannot. So the whole Strava concept falls apart for me as ride time and goals are fragmented across two cycling apps. I guess that until Strava actually employs individuals who ride off road in unfamiliar territory, and understand the issues first hand, nothing will change. It would be good to understand why Strava have decided this as perhaps there would be a better understanding for your customers. However as I said earlier, thanks for updating us.

  • Hi Elle,

What is the reason behind your decision?

  • Yes, the decision to hold-off on satellite for the record screen and route navigation screen is due to the need to work on the designs. Yes, I know, I am not a designer either and can't speak to the specifics! What I gather from the internal conversation is that we want to support satellite in these areas but we just need more time to bring the design/functionality of those screens up to standard. I'll keep you all posted, for sure.

Does one of you wish to start a new request specifically for satellite on iOS during the recording experience? That may help bring additionally visibility to this topic, and is something I can share with the design team. Thanks.

  • Elle,

"...Does one of you wish to start a new request specifically for satellite on iOS during the recording experience?..."  Well actually, it was requested in October 2014, with a link to this thread.

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208843297-Satellite-Contour-map-while-recording-an-activity

Comments on this thread are here because it is the place with the most focus, comments and input from your customers on this request.  So excuse the pun here, but we are going around in circles.  Just like me using strava off-road ;-)

May I suggest that rather than annoy people even more by doing this whole thread / post thing once again, you climb the ivory tower where the developers sit, look atop the pedestal upon which they seem to reside in Strava-land and get them to actually engage with the inputs from real live human beings (a.k.a. customers), get them in the real world and READ this thread.  It's more efficient for one developer to read this thread than for hundreds more duplicate posts to be generated. What more evidence do you require?? It's obvious to everyone here.  Posting on a 'new' thread sounds like 'stalling for time' to me.

Screen designs? Really?  My  suggestion is to replace the cream coloured area on the attached image with a satellite image....and a toggle button to change back to the default map type.  Zoom using +/- button on screen as 2 finger pinch zooming is hard whilst riding. Cache maps option also.

  • I think the conversation is beyond the type of map, but the map source, in my case i'm in Colombia and the apple maps suck (Satellite, standard or hybrid). I've reported several times to apple the bug. As seen in the screenshot, they don't even have the labels in the right place.

The useful solution would be to have google maps or Open Street Maps.

If other apps like cyclemeter or runtastic have this feature, is this really hard for you guys???

Thanks to listen, and waiting for this feature to go premium.
