Splits and Interval training with Cycling Audio Announcements

Hey Guys I love the app and UI but it would great if you could at voice coached interval training similar to what runkeeper has.. even if it is a paid add on.  I prefer Strava to Runkeeper but for intervals i have to turn to Runkeeper. I would rather have only one app to deal with.

  • I wonder if they'll pay more attention on here if we start swearing... STRAVA, WHY ARE YOU NOT TREATING THE PEOPLE WHO ARE COMMENTING HERE AS THE PEOPLE YOU ARE ABOUT TO LOSE AS VALUED CUSTOMERS???!

  • :-( .. I thought there was a problem with my phone, spent hours trying to fix it..

I just changed from runkeeper to strava premium hoping somehow this feature would become available. too bad..

Guys, seriously, make it CLEAR that strava does not support announcements when cycling. If i knew it, I would not giving up on runkeeper premium.
*******One year later and no update?********

Honestly, the feature list is misleading. Let the route plan give the impression of support to (turn by turn) navigation and is not clear that it lacks such a basic feature as cycling announcements.

Getting back to the quest on finding a better cycling app.

  • Hello Strava,

I can't stress enough how valuable voice feedback during runs/rides are!!!  With mapmyrun or mapmyride you can choose the interval (# of miles or # of km) for receiving the voice updates for the following options, but I want to use Strava exclusively, can we throw these in the app?

    -Total Distance
    -Total Time
    -Average Pace/Speed
    -Current Pace/Speed
    -Split Pace/Speed
    -Heart Rate
    -Time of Day

And volume control for the voice feedback.

I've tried running/recording rides using both Strava and MapMyRide (so I can get the best of both worlds), but with the GPS, Strava will lose me and end up generating a straight path here and there once it finds me again, making for a throwaway record of my ride.

    Thank you in advance!

(PS how will we ever know if they plan on implementing this Voice Feedback feature???)

  • @David,

Unfortunately this is a thread without involvement from Strava. Nobody at strava has responded or considered any of the listed and desired features. Sad!

  • @milo pryzz - What's awesome, is that after I submitted this feature request with Strava through Support's 'Submit a Request' they sent me here... :(  Very disappointing Milo, very disappointing.

  • Map my ride - free - announcements

Strava - free - no announcements - premium - no announcements

It didn't work for me under the free part of the app so upgraded to premium to fix this issue because the app clearly states "Real-time segment announcements - premium only". What an absolute load of BS!

  • Strava has informed me that they currently have NO plans on adding real time voice feedback/segment announcements, it's crazy to me that they don't want to add this feature so many of us want.  Spread the word, ask others to request this feature, if enough of us rally behind it, then maybe they will choose to start developing/integrating this into the app.

  • I primarily use Wahoo app when cycling for the audio announcement.  The most useful for me is change in HR zone - I have it set up so each time my HR changes zones, it announces the new Zone.  I also have it announce my average HR every 2 minutes and have different data sets for double up volume and double down volume related to ride/interval statistics.  It's all very easy to set up and use in the Wahoo app.

  • Based on Carl Voss's comment, have tried Wahoo App for first time today, and absolutely love the customisable audio announcements!!!  It also uploads the ride back to Strava, so I only need the Strava app on my phone now to view my segments after the ride.

If Starva ever get their finger out wrt split announcements, then I may switch back to their app - but I can't see them doing a better job than Wahoo.

  • What a shite app. No split time announcements for cyclists. But it's ok to have them as a runner. I like the segments, but won't pay to go premium just to get announcements. Map My Ride, and Endemondo offer them for free. I use their apps now. Pull your finger out Strava, and keep up with the competition at least.

  • I was coming from mapmyride as well, hoping that the premium version of Strava would give me the mile splits. Pretty disappointing that feature is not there.

  • Not sure it makes sense why it would be in for running and not cycling.. seems like a major oversight.  I used cyclemeter before and prefer Strava for the community.. even though I can sync.. This should be a simple change...

  • adding another voice to this request.

i've been so impressed with your app in so many ways.  this, to me, is the only lacking feature.  i'm just starting to get into cycling and having audio cues every half mile to inform me on my pace would be extremely useful.  i get caught up in the excitement of riding and forget to maintain my desired pace.  it would be a huge help if strava had just some basic cues every mile or half mile for cycling.

  • Started using strava for cycling after years of using RunKeeper. If it had the audio cue versatility that RunKeeper has, I would switch over 100% for running as well, but my robot coach is too important to me. I can't go it alone.

  • Well, Elle Anderson asked what features we want 2 years ago, and I see none of them in Strava now. So I have little hope they will come in the future. I use Strava for MTB, and I absolutely can not have my phone on my handlebars to visually check on anything. I purchased a HR monitor and a premium membership this season hoping all the "coaching" that came with the premium membership would include some way to do some HR zone training, with time cues to change zones and audio cues to let you know when you enter or leave prescribed HR zones. But alas, the "coaching" is completely useless for me.

Strava nailed it with the segments and social aspects of the app, but they are missing the boat as far as an athletic development app. Will cancel membership unless they significantly update the app. The premium features are essentially worthless.

  • Love the Screen, BIG Speed display.

Beyond Stupid NOT to have the Audio Cue's Biking, where somebody could have an external PowerPack to power all the GPS/Audio etc...

They collect all sorts of data for Indoor Virtual Bike Trainers.

I'd pay for an app that compared my best ride WHILE I was riding.

No motivation looking at the comparison AFTER the ride.

Customer Support says they are a small company and the extra code it would take is too much.  ????

    Yes, they think very small.

Off to try endomondo...   Bye Strava.

  • I agree with what most people are saying here. I'm currently using RunKeeper because I love their audio cues (for cycling and running - mostly cycling), and just exporting my rides to Strava. Please add audio cues for

    - time

    - distance

    - pace

for cycling. Looks like there is a lot of interest, and it shouldn't be a hard feature to add. Once these are added I can finally exclusively use strava!

  • Hi, recently downloaded Strava and was disappointed to find out splits are not an available. Always enjoyed knowing my split times with Runkeeper to understand which miles I'm weakest on. Would be a great add on feature for Strava!

  • First off, I love the strava app and the web interface. The development team has produced a solid product. Thanks!
I am gonna concur with the folks in this thread about a desired upgrade:
    * having audio cues from your app on when to speed up, slow down, etc is critical to effective interval training: having to look at your phone is distracting.
    * this is the biggest feature I miss from your competitor runkeeper and is so important, that of all things, it is most likely to be the feature that sends me back to them.

  • this is a response from Strava to Audio Cues FOR Running but NOT FOR Biking.  But seems like it took MORE programing to turn it OFF !  .....

One idea for you. You could select "run" when recording, then have access to audio announcements, then when you're finished you could save the activity as a ride. I think it would just take an extra step or two.

Perhaps I can't explain why we don't have this feature for cyclists, but I do know that when we researched the topic of audio cues we found that most cyclist don't consider them a necessity. So, we de-prioritized this project due to this finding. I know this doesn't apply to everyone, and I do apologize. Please understand that we're still a small company with limited resources for development, so we have to carefully consider our projects.

  • @markbarron, this is the first response i have seen from strava in this feed in almost 2 years. Needless to say that everyone in this feed is not to happy about not finding intervall options in your cycling mode.

I understand the part about being a small company, but this is an absolute key feature for every cyclist training for any race, so please, please with sugar on top, finally enable that same feature you already have in running mode into the cycling mode. All else is great, just that :)

here is the response from strava to this thread to which i am responding to:

  • Would love to know how they took a survey to determine Voice Cues for Biking was something that was not wanted.  Clearly, Nobody at Strava views this thread.

  •  I am glad to see people still post to get them to listen.  I would be happy to add this if they want to open their apps for forking ;-)  I think everyone has summed this up great, the audio cues are there for running, we are simply asking for this when cycling .. I work for a company and we build apps for the web and mobile and completely understand the long list of improvements that you get and prioritization.  I used Cyclemeter for years before switching. There app has TONS of features I wish were in Strava.. but here is the thing..  Strava wins on community, period.  Your community is letting you know that there is a big gap here, for the core of what strava was built for.. cycling.

You could also do what we do, get an intern to do it to cut their teeth on your code base. ;-)

Can't understand why Strava doesn't have it. Would pay good money to get them on Strava!!!
