Edit Distance for an Activity

Can we please have an edit mileage feature.  I use a garmin watch when running but it often does not pick up at the start of the run, sometimes for quite some time, and therefore despite me running 10 miles, it only logs 4!!! Can we have the ability to manually edit the mileage.  And then show on the logs that mileage was edited.

It would also be good to edit the course, and plot the actual route taken to check the distance run.

Many thanks

  • The easiest way I have found is as Adomas suggests export the activity from Garmin Connect as TCX, and then edit it changing the first and last value of

<DistanceMeters>0.0</DistanceMeters>  to the value that you want.

This retains the HRM data and sets the distance as required. Can't understand why the App / Website doesn't allow this though.

  • I don't see how a company like Strava can claim to be a professional technology company when you don't even realize that GPS reported distances aren't 100% correct.

I got into this thread the day I ran my very first 1/2 Marathon but wasn't given credit for it because your company is so effing competitive that you think that I lied about it.  I guess I was supposed to keep running past the finish line, through the parking lot and do laps around the pavilion just in case?  I USED YOUR TECHNOLOGY to help train for that run for months, and yet, you screwed me out of my accomplishment.

Look at this...8 pages of requests for the same feature and you still won't listen.  Maybe it's time for a blog post somewhere and I'll use this thread as an example when you won't implement a completely reasonable feature.  I will also recommend new runners who are trying to achieve life-time goals to NOT use Strava as they most likely won't give you credit for when you reach them.

  • The lack of such a basic feature is both a huge annoyance and the main reason I have to use another app/service as my 'official' mileage/training log. Come on Strava, just add the ability to edit mileage/time but then exclude any edited activities from segment records and leaderboard. It's not bloody rocket science!

  • When I am running in a gym, my Garmin watch, even if GPS is turned off, is trying to estimate distance :-( Whatever it shows, for such case I trust more the devices in gym rather than some assumption of the watch... in Garmin Connect I can edit the distance, but not in Strava app :-( it would be very, very helpful.

  • After reading this post i have given up that Strava is going to fix this. But is there a better alternative app out there?

The last training was 10,4 km on a threadmill  on strava it shows 14 km, and its impossible to edit.

  • I ran my FIRST full marathon yesterday and had my Garmin die at 24.33 miles. I realize Strava is not responsible for this but I'm really disappointed that I cannot come back and edit the time and distance here is Strava like I can in Garmin Connect.

This is not the first time I have wanted this feature but this IS my first marathon and an OFFICIAL race that I want reflected in my Strava account. Is it possible that I could send you the link to the results page and YOU could edit it for me?

Feeling very cheated in the reflection of this significant event in my Strava feed :-(

  • I'm surprised that Strava doesn't allow for user editing of distance and time.
So I think I'll stick with SmashRun for that reason.

  • Is there an update on this?  Strava often stops recording my rides without me knowing, and I need to be able to update. Otherwise, Strava's ride recording feature is pretty useless to me.  I rode 65 miles today, and Strava stopped recording at mile 23.

  • Wow, I just came here to find out how to do this, and after asking for 4 years they still don't have this feature? I thought Strava was the premium app ???

  • Has there been any update on this issues yet? I went on a ride yesterday and found that the Strava app on my iPhone had only recoded half of it. I edited the ride to add the missing section but don't seem to be able to add this to my activity. I exported it as a GPX file but then it was rejected when I tried to upload this again as it didn't contain any time information.

    Thanks

  • Well, if I can understand why we cannot edit an activity uploaded from the watch, now I am confused why I cannot edit an activity that I created manually.

I ran a race a month ago. 80km race, 10 hours event. A big file on my watch. I tried to upload it, something went wrong and I could not do it. I ended up creating a manual entry for 80km run.

Yesterday I worked with Suunto tech support and fixed the issue on my watch. We managed to upload my run. Now I have 2 events, 80km each on the same day. I do not want to delete the manual one as it has tons of comments and kudos, but I want to change distance from 80km to zero or 0.1. Something like that. But it does not let me do that.

Can anyone from Strava team do this for me? Here is the activity: https://www.strava.com/activities/1599409609

  • Please do add this functionality, preferably on both the mobile app and through the browser interface.

I've recently worked (unsuccessfully - boo!) with Strava Support for several weeks trying to troubleshoot my Android app as the app (or the GPS on my phone?) suddenly wasn't able to smoothly interpolate between GPS points, resulting in a very jagged GPS track and overstated miles. Being able to edit the total mileage would let me continue to use my phone for tracking AND have accurate mileage totals.

In addition, the data I collect via Strava app is being synced (I think?) to the National Bike Challenge, so it is also incorrect there now.

  • Not sure what all the issues are behind this, but this is another reason I am hesitant to pay for premium.

There are many times I found that Strava did not log my entire route - either the start point or losing track somewhere in the middle of my route. I tend to believe that even though I am within city limits, have a solid 4GLTE signal, etc., I attribute this to be a problem with the GPS on my LG G5 phone.

What's frustrating is not being able to modify the start point, or way points in the middle of my route to correct the error. There has to be a simple way to give users the ability to add/modify routes to get the mileage without affecting the original GPS recording. All I'm interested in is getting the mileage down.

Users can game the system by using electric bikes, mopeds, or handing their device to a friend who runs faster. There will always be users that do this. It's unfair to the rest of us, but the large majority are not going to the trouble of submitting manual routes to get the #1 segment.

The easy way to avoid this is to keep achievements pure and only rank those that do not have manual adjustments.

Unfortunately, because the errors are happening so often, whether it's my phone or not, I will probably start searching for another app so I can get my full mileage recorded. It's unfortunate, because I generally like Strava and its ease of use.

  • Desperately needed feature! Yesterday I accidentally left Strava running on my phone while my ride was recording on my Wahoo (I switched bikes); the end result is that I duplicated 20 miles.

I have to copy Strava results into a spreadsheet for tracking actual mileage because I can't rely on Strava; if you make a mistake, it's there forever. I have no interest in being a part of any competition or KOMs; I just want to record my rides.

  • This feature does exist. Strava decided to disable it. It's not really clear why, althou some claims that cheating in segment competition is the reason. This however seems unlikly to me as you can simply cheat by using bike or car.

I too would very much like to opt-out from segment competition and be able to adjust my mesurment to reflect real numbers. After all I do it for myself not for others.

  • Let me edit distance and time!!! The whole point for me is to track my results accurately. My very first experience using this app, I ran around a pond, checked the stats half way around with my phone and it showed the route going directly across the water, and the time was wrong as well. Now I cannot edit. Terrible experience. May uninstall and find an app that allows edits.

  • That is why I use SmashRun. I often edit my distances, especially if I have mapped them carefully in another program.

I upload my Garmin FIT files to both Strava & SmashRun. SmashRun just recently added a 'Social Beta' which I joined, so I can comment on other people's runs.

  • It's annoying. Strava should allow edit and then exclude from segment comp, But threatening to uninstall... You would just do that if serious.

  • I fully understand the point. However, it is a pity for activities like spinning if you don't have the right accessories. No distance is recorded here. That would be nice if this could be changed.

  • When swimming breaststroke with GPS watch your arms are under water and doesn't detect the GPS signal well. The recording of dostance gets way too low. E.g. last Saturday I swam 650 m, but my Garmin 920xt recorded 78 m. In Garmin Connect I can manually edit the distance to 650 m. But not in Strava and since I have automatic upload to Strava the activity is uploaded immediately with 78 m. Even if I manually change it to 650 m i Garmin Connect later it will not be uploaded to Strava. Would be nice if I could manually edit it in Strava.

  • swimming is another case where the distance is almost always wrong and editing it would be great.

  • Over 4 years of customers requesting this feature ON THIS THREAD ALONE yet Strava continue to ignore us!!!! This weekend I ran an officially measured Half Marathon but because of 1) GPS inaccuracy, and 2) Strava rounding distance down, instead of up, the race did not register as a half marathon. Both Garmin Connect, and MapMyRun show the distance as 21.1km and even allow editing if required, yet Strava still refuse to sort out this most basic of problems. STOP INTRODUCING USELESS FEATURES TO YOUR PLATFORM (we're overwhelmed with challenges and the like), AND DEVELOP WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE ASKING AND PAYING FOR!!!!!

  • I just love SmashRun for my 'true' stats. Almost always editing my distance, as I run only accurately mapped routes.
I upload direct (manually) from my watch to the website. I don't bother with Garmin Connect.

  • I came across this thread whilst trying to figure something out. I did a pretty epic ride in the alps recently. Someone I follow on Strava claims to have done the same ride and has the activity up to show this. However there are a few things which are rather confusing. The ride consists of 3 ascents. The guys 1st ascent has different numbers to mine and his segment times are significantly slower. The following decent also has different numbers. This is where it gets interesting! His segment times are then EXACTLY the same as mine for the following 2 ascents/descents. The last section of the last ascent is the same as the 1st ascent, yet he completes this massively quicker than his 1st ascent, again in exactly the same time as me! The gps map is also exactly the same as mine, he even appeared to stop to buy a drink from the same cafe! His HRM stops completely when the data starts to mirror mine. I don’t use a HRM!
So you have to admit it looks fishy, but how?

  • Same issue here.  My Fitbit Ionic died at mile 37 of a 45 mile ride.  I thought it would be really simple to edit it, but couldn't find where.  Found this thread and can't believe Strava doesn't allow us to edit.  Right, I don't care about the leaderboards.  I just want to keep track of my training for an upcoming triathlon.  I've cropped hikes and rides before when I forgot to stop the app on my phone - not because someone reported it but because I wanted my activities to reflect my training.

  • I have a PB run for 5km at 23.26 however on strava (apple watch 2) it recorded 4.97km... Therefore this effort doesn't show on my estimated PB!/fastest times... Some sort of work-around would be great.

  • This is crazy.  Simple feature request that they just seem to be ignoring.  Ran a 5K today and my watch measured 3.03, but the race officials say it was definitely 3.1, but I can't fix it.  Why?

  • This is a standard feature that other running apps offer, such as RunKeeper. In most cases the adjustments are tiny, like Jeff's example above. e.g., a few hundred meters. Sometimes Strava does not match the GPS info from the Garmin, which does not make sense to begin with. The fact that I can't make changes is pretty crap. Also if you want to put in the official race time instead.

Not giving us this option due to data quality or cleanliness is a crap excuse. It should be up to the user to decide what's most important to them. Especially as someone that's paying, I am pretty peeved about this.

    Can you please fix this?
