Run Gear Improvements - Shoes

How could we make the Gear section of Strava better for Runners? What additional features would you like to see around tracking your shoes?

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us!

  • +1 for adding shoes with existing mileage. (BTW, same issue on adding a bike).  Silly to think everyone will start running, sign up with Strava, and add their new shoes immediately... some of us have been running for a bit before Strava :-)

  • +1 for extending run gear functionalities. It is clearly a big miss in Strava.

Example of how much it is wrong :

I received today an email saying that I run many kilometers. Great.
"You ran 555 kilometers with your Mizuno shoes" > Wrong. I ran 309 kilometers with it. It is just that I couldn't enter a starting mileage when I created te shoes in Strava.
"General recommendation is to replace your shoes every 300 to 500 miles" > Bad. It mixes miles and kilometers.

Please Strava, tell us you work on that !

  • Hi Cédric - Thanks for your feedback, I know that adding the ability to enter a starting mileage for shoes is a popular request! Also, I think that is a bug with the units in miles. Are you seeing this from the mobile app only? I checked the website, and we list the units correctly.

    Thanks!

  • +1 to Steven V's comment.

Add an ability to filter activities for given shoes. This would be a great verification tool for making sure that we have the shoes assigned correctly to activities.

  • Dear Strava Support,

So what's the state of the "adding a initial milage" or editing a milage on a pair of shoes feature request? Looks like many people want it and it also looks like it was acknowledged from your side but on the other side it has been discussed for several months now without being attacked. Is there an estimate by when we can expect it?

    Thx a lot

    Dan

  • Yes, this would be great!

The ability to go back and view all activities with a certain shoe would also be extremely useful.

  • Agree with allowing us to add mileage to shoes without adding a workout (treadmill runs, initial mileage for new users, etc).  Also a feature to sort runs by gear (i.e. click a specific shoe or bike and see all runs/rides done with that piece of gear)

  • Dear Elle and Strava team,

my suggestions in order of importance (to me) are:

    1. Allow different shoes for one activity (very important to me personally):

Many times I run to the track in my everyday trainers, put on fast shoes for intervals, and run back again in "slow shoes". Or I do a run in the woods and take of my shoes altogether for some strides or a short lap on forest soil. I could make that three different activities, but they are not - it is all just ONE run, and it would be very annoying to see my stats of the day distorted by that.

    2. On Profile, allow to sort gear alphabetically or by mileage:

It is just random now, and that bothers me a lot. Takes unnecessarily long to find a specific shoe.

    3. Allow to set a starting mileage:

Would be nice as well. Enough written about this by others.

Thanks for reaching out to the users, I hope to find (some of) these features implemented soon!

  • The shoe gear section now contains pick lists for brand and model of shoe.  If you run in two or more different pairs of the same brand and model, there is no way now to differentiate each pair.  Previously, one could add a nickname.  That seems to have been removed (even for Premium clients).

  • Yes, please; another vote for adding mileage to shoes. I just started using Strava but my shoes already have plenty of miles on them.

  • Same as much of the other comments, but another voice on this: please add the option to specify a starting mileage for shoes.  I'm pretty new with Strava and all my shoes have existing mileage.

  • Dear Strava team,

this was asked in February by one of you and is getting a lot of response. How can it take so long to implement those improvements?

Thanks, and looking forward to the new features!

  • No one is leaving Strava because of lack of gear tracking. The number of people waiting to pay are not enough to make up for the development cost.

There's no RoI, so gear enhancements are that bottom of the queue task.

Elle's Anderson's created this to separate out running gear from cycling gear.  Her OP on the cycling thread implied that this is just a collection of ideas, without a defined plan for implementation.

    (Cycling link is https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21453463 )

I'm not saying it won't happen, just that it's most likely low priority.

  • "No one is leaving Strava because of lack of gear tracking." - Not so sure about that. There are a lot of great options out there and some have an edge on Strava in one or another area. People are going to go to the platform that they like most (cost of migration is not too large), and gear can be one factor in that decision.

  • ROI on something like this is pretty difficult to determine, and this seems like a fundamental feature. There are a lot of people here wanting it, and those that actually post are a fraction of those that think it.

As a developer too - I gotta say, this doesn't look like such a big deal to add.

  • Andrew, sure, not a huge deal, but it's paid developers.  The changes would require schema changes, backend coding, frontend coding, data conversion, testing, support, etc.  The cost of that on a paid (not volunteer) basis is probably worth at least 1000 paid annual memberships.  We have what, 13 likes on this one, and 58 on the other?  If we want any real attention for this, we'd need many more people showing interest.

Alex, maybe "no one" was too strong.  I doubt they are losing enough business to justify prioritizing this over any other enhancements.  The map building was a direct pull against MapMyRide.  That was big.  Equipment tracking is pretty low demand comparatively.

  • 13 likes and about 50 people commenting. Wish it didn't have to be a popularity contest, but could be based on what features would truly make a great improvement. Biased as I am, trying to both run and cycle, I'd like one program that does BOTH well. Being pushed to go back to other options

  • hm, I don't get it: in february it was asked "What additional features would you like to see around tracking your shoes? " - as much as I try I cannot think of anything more obvious than having an initial milage and being able to edit the milage or adding milage without a tracked worked. Many ppl asked for it but still nothing happened. I'm convinced people will leave because of that.

Why ask if one is not willing to invest. And yes, development would take some time of paid devs but from my background in opensource development I can tell that adding features might easily attract more unpaid users and if those like it some of them will switch to the payed version. Win-win, no? As for me I first wanted to test the free version and if I like it upgrade to the payed one. Following this discussion I'll not follow this plan now. I'm looking for alternatives...

  • I currently have about 5k miles running in MMR (didn't know if it was appropriate to fully list it the name) and the changes to their gear section has made me look to jump ship.  Josh, you're probably correct on the effort to that type of change, the price estimate may be a little high, but considering the abundance of features you have, it would be great if this could be included.  Even if there was a way to 'add mileage' to a piece of gear rather than a full blown redesign might be an option.  This is a great sight and I am in the process of weening my self off MMR.

  • I really do agree that it would be a nice, low-cost concession for them to allow adding a starting mileage to gear.  I have so many items listed that have long comments with this info.

Unless we have a champion inside Strava who wanted the same enhancements, the only way to make it a priority is to have a bigger voice, which really means a financial impact.  There are 75 of us, vs 100k premiums, a few million unpaids, and a few tens of millions of total accounts.  Strava is 85 people managing 93 million hours per week of new data.  My guess is they're buried enough that only things with a positive RoI get attention (ie: Metro).

  • The only reason I don't use shoe tracking feature on Strava is because I already have 10+ pairs of shoes with various mileages. Allow me to enter pre-existing mileage or add an extra mileage not tracked by an activity and I'll start using this feature.

  • I just signed up tonight because someone told me this feature existed. Since it doesn't there is no need for me to stay!

  • I see that this topic is still in discussion for almost a year. I can't think that it is quite difficult for your programers to allow an initial milage value for shoes. This is just a new field on the input screen and an easy calculation in the background. Why is this taking that long??? Please make a lot of people happier with Strava by adding this strongly requested feature to the site. And by the way, what about the option to choose the used pair of shoes in the mobile app when saving the activity?

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us!"

Yeah, and thanks for nothing! I can't believe that something so obvious as a edible mileage for shoes isn't implemented to start with, and even is not added after months and almost anyboday who comments asking! I'm a paying customer, but not for much longer.

  • Add mileage manually to shoes. I actually spent 15 minutes or so looking for this feature because I assumed it was there. This seems like low hanging fruit.

  • I would love to be able to add existing shoes with mileage already on them! It's so confusing when shoes already in rotation have zero distance on them

  • Since it seems pretty clear they have no desire to add the ability to add shoes with mileage already on them... does anyone have any suggestions for a good app that does?!
