Run Gear Improvements - Shoes

How could we make the Gear section of Strava better for Runners? What additional features would you like to see around tracking your shoes?

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us!

  • I'd like to be able to see the date of the first run I have a pair of shoes attached to. I mean, I want this for thirty seconds twice a year or something. But you asked. :D

  • I subscribed to this thread ages ago, and now every couple of weeks, I get a reminder of how little Strava cares about the one feature I want!

  • Allow gear to be removed from an activity (not deleted, removed).

  • Ironically the people who have been looking for this feature for a long time might not need it anymore as the shoes in question will have been retired and the new shoes will have been added from day 1. Can't believe Strava STILL haven't implemented such an easy change!

  • Please allow users to manually enter mileage for shoes.  I just started using the app and my shoes already have about 150 miles on each pair but they all say 0 miles.

  • Well...I guess I'll just request this feature again...along with a lot of other folks. Please consider adding the ability enter the starting mileage on shoes. Many of us transferred over from other applications and would like to be able to include actual mileage we put on shoes prior to picking up Strava. Thanks again for allowing me to make this request.

  • Still waiting for ability to edit shoe mileage. I want to go premium but won't till I can enter starting mileage.

  • +1

I cannot believe there is no way to add a field to modify the actual milage for the shoes.

This is the main reason I am not jumping ship from dailymile.com

  • +1 for editing mileage for running shoes. Any update when we can expect any of these?

  • PLEASE let us track mileage for walks and hikes!

  • I want to be able to alternate between between running shoes from the app. I would have thought this was a high demand item as many runners have more than one  pair on the go at any time.

Surely it's not hard to be able to toggle between two shoes.

    please advise

  • Mark Ross: I believe you can do that? There should be a drop down of all of the shoes you have active when you upload a new activity. I currently have three pairs in heavy rotation and two more in the drop-down that I just haven't gotten around to throwing away/retiring.

  • Adding starting mileage to shoes! Very important for people just moving over to Strava

  • On top of editing mileage, where's the mobile support? I got a new pair of shoes, and do all my stuff through my phone. Now I have to go tot he non-mobile friendly site and add it? I realize how #firstworld this is, but it's a seemingly simple feature.

After 3 years of this post and no change to the functionality per the requests of Strava's users, I suppose I shouldn't hold my breath.

  • One more for shoes getting tracked in hikes/walks along with runs!

  • Ability to not choose a shoe for a run, or an "Other" option for shoes.  Had to add my own "No name" shoes for when I use an old pair that I don't care about mileage on.

  • +1 to Justin's request above. Occasionally I run barefooted and Strava still insists on assigning miles to one of my shoes. Also if I edit a really old run that I did before I started tracking shoe mileage Strava wants to use one of current shoes.

The only workaround is to add a fake shoe, use it for the run that I don't want to be tracked, then delete that shoe. But that is a pain to do, especially that it can't be done on mobile.

  • Related: Because I recently retired a pair of shoes and added a new pair, I've noticed a glitch where old workouts that I'm manually syncing to Strava are added with the new shoes that are default--but those shoes didn't exist at the point in time that the workout was done. Would be nice to default to no shoes, or to the default that existed at that point in time, so that it doesn't mess up the miles on the new shoes...

Request: Don't default old workouts to a specific shoe. Preferable would be no shoes, and manually edit if desired/need be.

  • Stanislav-

There is a "shoe" option titled "Barefoot (No Shoes)", just for that use.

  • Phil-

Thanks! What about other situations like running in demo shoes or making a run in new shoes and then returning them because they didn't fit. This happened to me multiple times. Why invent a special "barefoot" shoe option if none selected is already a legitimate option on the server side. It is just the client side that can't support it and Strava has no desire to change that (just like a dozen of other small easy to fix annoyances).

Where they save in not spending time and money on issues like this they lose more in user loyalty and premium memberships.

  • When watching an older workout I would like to see how much milage my shoe had back then.

Overall mileage is only useful in the latest workout and in the Gear section.

  • OK, I'll waste my time and jump in as well.  Why not allow tracking of miles for walking and hiking on the shoes as well?  I use my running shoes when I go for a walk, ruck or hike.

I have the free version and after trying a few things and searching through these forums, I doubt I will ever pay.  It seems like there are straight forward requests, nothing ever done and there are other apps out there that are either more responsive or can already do simple stuff like combine my walk and run mileage.

  • Yes! let us edit the shoes km!

Fake activity is just a very bad idea!

  • Add option to include a pet (dog in my case) as a piece of gear to track mileage. Must be able to enter starting mileage though. Understand that some people ride with their dog as well, so this gear item should be accessible for runs and rides (probably for all activities while you're at it for hikes, XC ski, etc.).

  • 3 years later and you still haven't implemented the ability for other activities to track shoe mileage. Do the basics properly before you focus on the "innovative" stuff.
