Enter Elevation data for a Manual Activity entry

I run on the treadmill and I typically run on an incline. I like to record my ascent for week, it wold be nice to add the miles on the treadmill to the total.

  • I ran an official race this week-end. The record of my activity failed, thus I entered it manually in Strava. I was able to set the distance, the duration, but not the elevation, though I have the exact value, provided by the organization of the race. It would really be great if I can set it too.

  • I too would like to see this enhancement.
It looks like people have been asking for this for years now.

I am a software developer and honestly don't see what should be so difficult about implementing this feature. Makes me reconsider whether I want to continue paying for premium membership.

  • I don't care about miles as much as elevation as I am mostly a mtn biker.  I'd like to see weekly goals based on elevation, as well as the ability to manually add an activity with elevation.  ONce in a while the GPS freezes and I hate it when I loose that climbing in my yearly, monthly and weekly totals.

  • Ditto. Is there any update on this from strava support?

Dear Stava SW-Developers , it would be definitly nice to have it when for some reason the synch. bw. Garmin and Strava fail.

  • I couldn't agree more. I have a Bryton computer, so have to enter everything manually. I'm training for a 1 month Pyrenees/Alps/Apennines trip, so all I do is cycle up and down hills, but I can't enter the altitude. C'mon, Strava!

  • I'd like to see this feature too, please. My phone has conked out twice this week and I've done the two biggest climbs of my life!

  • I would like to physically locate one of Strava's developers and hold his head in front of my screen to read these comments :-). I guess my odds of finding one is pretty slim.

For now I have given up on this. I bought a Garmin GPS watch to avoid a Strava app crash in the middle of a ride. Then I can sync all the data to Strava after.  Problem solved. LOL.

  • Add elevation manually to a Manually Entered Activity.

  • People have been asking for this feature, literally, for years now, and it really can't be all that hard to implement.

It reminds me of the way Strava has similarly ignored the request, voiced many times over the years, for the ability to upload photos from one's computer. Again, how hard could that be to implement ?.
On other, unrelated matters, I have sent emails to Strava's customer support several times over the years, requesting assistance, and never got any reply whatsoever.
My conclusion: Strava doesn't give a sh!t about its customers
I certainly have no intention of continuing to pay for premium service, once my current subscription expires, if this is the way they treat their loyal customers

  • I think the underlying issue is likely that Strava does not get a lot of revenue from generating features. Or they just don't care. Anyway - I posted this back awhile - the work around is to just by-pass Strava. Get a Garmin watch etc and then just upload your data to Garmin Connect (Garmin's Web Based Exercise and Fitness App). This has the features that you are requesting, changing elevation manually etc. Then just have your Garmin account linked to your Strava account. Then the data will just update there. I think you can attach pics and do all that other stuff there as well.

  • @John Melville: that's all very well if you want to splash out on a new Garmin watch. But when you've got a perfectly good Bryton bike computer and no wish to fork out however much for a Garmin watch, there's no easy way around this.

  • I have my photos automatically synced from phone to PC.  I can also copy photos from my PC to my phone and add to a ride (tested with the app)..
How to add photos to a ride =>> In the phone app you can edit a ride.  Edit includes adding photos.  After the photos have been added you can add captions.  You can do it any time without the hassle of the Instagram time slot.

  • @Ben Kane - You don't need to own a Garmin device to sign up for a Garmin Connect Account - they have an APP and a Cloud Based website where you can enter your data. You can 'manually' enter activities and you can modify them. Then you link that account to Strava. Then your elevation loss and gain is added etc.

    https://connect.garmin.com/en-US/

I am not sure if Garmin Connect supports SUUNTO etc or other devices like Strava - I would expect that it would not.

  • How come when you post to Facebook it doesn't show the elevation gain? I wish the new version had that. I know showe on Strava. But a nice suggestion.

  • Spending a lot of time on the Tacx machine. Most of the time with incline, shorter trips, to get the most of it when time is limited.

It would be great to have that option :)

This incline/ elevation should only be available if choosing Taxc machine or treadmill.

Easy fix!!!  greta for us spending time on these machines.

  • +1, this would be a great feature.

    But there's an alternative solution:

  • I also use the 'gotoes' utility for Strava - but seriously, what a run around.

Strava : Cmon - this is likely small configuration change (maybe half day effort for Dev, half day test for testing?) - how much does that cost? Compare that to the vast #'s of users that are leaving (including on bad terms) your 'Premium' Service...just does not make any sense from a Business perspective

I would strongly urge anybody who follows this thread to either 'relike' this post, repost or reissue their original.

Maybe with a flood of posting on a singular issue, it may register for Strava??

  • @Alistair

I left the premium service as I consider the customer service to be the absolute worst.

Regarding elevation on manual entries, when I was a premium member I raised a ticket for this issue and was told categorically it would never happen. When pressed further they said it was due to integrity issues??

  • Folks, I'm doing my best to make this feature request happen for you. We simply have a very full lineup of other projects at the moment, and adding elevation to a manual entry is not a priority for us. We know this feature is important to our users however.

@Alistair, part of the response you received from our support team was in regard to treadmill elevation counting towards challenge totals. This is the same for indoor cycling as well, our challenges only include outdoor data, not indoor data, at this time.

  • My Garmin had always showed a lower number in elevation compared to my friend's. Again, for today's ride both my friends had at least 600ft or more of elevation, compared to mine which was only 417ft.  We rode exactly the same route at about the same time, which gave me a difficulty in understanding why it was so different.  When I clicked on the elevation marked in blue color, i was hoping I can correct it to the true number, but instead it brought my number farther down to 214 ft instead. Is there a way that you can correct these datas? Are you suggesting that there's something wrong with my garmin unit? This is not the 1st or 2nd or 3rd time that happened, my elevation number is always low compared to others ...

  • @Alex Lim there could be a number of explanations for your elevation problem.  You should provide link to your rides and your friends rides (not private of course)(And as you said 3 or more examples).  Without supporting data I could speculate that your friends are cheating or you misread the results.

Interesting complaint even though it is off the topic of Manual Activity Entry.

  • @Elle Anderson

It's hard to believe that anyone is trying to make this happen.  This thread has been going for over 2 years now.

Every time the app crashes I lose the record of my ride.   Sadly the app appears to be crashing more frequently lately and has crashed at approximately the same time 2 weeks in a row.  Maybe a coincidence maybe not.   I hate to lose all the history I have here but it might be time to move on to a more user friendly app
