Reverse an existing Strava Route

Hi,

Is it possible to reverse routes on Strava? I'd like the option to reverse routes I've ridden or created on the Strava route planner.

Regards, John

21.06.16 - So, two and a bit years later we're still no further forward with this development. Absolutely crazy!!

08/0217 - Well I've literally ran out of time waiting for this feature, having now being diagnosed with a terminal cancer. I find incredible that such a fundamental requirement for all cyclist in a cycling app simply isn't available.

  • Goed zo, Joost!

Maybe there is a way that Strava could use bikehike's code and site to make this at least "appear" to be a capability in Strava's toolkit?

  • Thanks Joost G. (brilliant solution) I've been waiting over 2 years for Strava to provide this simple function. I am so grateful someone else has found a work-around!

    One small correction:

    1) Upload to bikehike
    2) Click 'Reverse route'
    3) Click 'Save Route'

    ENJOY EVERYONE!!!

  • This would be a great feature.  It's really annoying that I've spent ages planning out a route from my house to my parents, and the only way to plan the route back is to spend ages inputting it all manually again.

  • I exported my route as a .gpx file, uimported it into MapMyRide, used their amazingly simple reverse route utility, exported the reversed route as .gpx then used StravaLabs import utility. A bit of work but much easier than recreating it within Strava:).

  • Why is it taking so long to implement such a simple enhancement. I create a lot of routes using ride with gps because they do have the feature. Haven't renewed my premium membership this time round :(

  • Not being able to reverse a route created is very frustrating, how much longer before Route Builder evolves and this promised enhancement is implemented

  • It seems ridiculous to me and totally non-responsive on Strava's part that this has not been implemented. This thread has been going on for two years or so!!!!!

  • I totally agree with this feature. Is there any official statement from Strava?

  • As per a comment here, I use bikeride.co.uk.

Would be nice if it can be done in the Strava app itself.

  • How will you all be celebrating the 3 year anniversary of the most basic of requests??

  • I just started (today) using "Ride with GPS". Got a decent route planner (and you can reverse a route!!!!!), audio cues (with an option to turn the screen on when they come up, to save having the screen on all the time)... and a lot more. While I'm still going to use Strava for my general stuff, I will now be using the other app for routes. Not ideal, but after 3 years of waiting on this feature, I think now is the time :(

  • I use http://www.mapmyride.com/ to create and edit routes.  I find it a much better app to use but Strava has other features, suc as use with Garmin. The Polar app is also very good.  MMR has all the features discussed here.  Export your route as .gpx file, use the tools in MMR, including reverse, out and back etc, and then import back to Strava.

  • Update - you can export and upload to MMR, but then STrava wont let you import the edited file back - doh!  Stumped by Strava again.

  • Update #2 - a bit more research and I have the answer to uploading back into Strava - http://labs.strava.com/gpx-to-route/#12/-122.44503/37.73651

It worked on my MacBook and Ive just downloaded it to my Garmin - I'll go out and test it.

  • Jeremy (official comment),

I call BS on your statement that we only get super basic mapping tools because the route builder is still in "beta."  When will it ever be out of beta?  Just from the date of the original post, it's clear that the it's been in beta for over three years!  This is the dominant cycling app/community and mapping is a basic function of the service.  Google and Apple release entire operating systems every year, but in 3 years you haven't been able to implement mapping tools that other services have had for ages?

  • Out and back is a no brainer when paddling a river, I might have to start the computer at the turn around to record a different route.

  • +1 for reverse and navigate-back-to-start.  This should be low-hanging fruit guys :)

  • Well, here's what I've figured out so far. You can take the GPX and manually import it into an activity in Garmin Connect via the file upload function. Then click on the gear icon in the upper left hand corner of the activity and select convert to course. Once you have it as a course, then you can select the button that says reverse course and it will do it for you. Save the new course. Export the gpx file, re-import it back into Strava, and now you've got a reversed version of the course you can follow in strava.

Hey Strava, somebody even wrote a little open source project to do the reversing of the gpx that you can use:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/reversegpx/

Please get your asses in gear.

  • Ha, should have know that it wouldn't be that easy. Now the problem seems to be how to get the reversed course from Garmin Connect back into Strava. There doesn't seem to be any straight forward way to do this. You can only export gpx files Garmin Connect if they are activities, but I can't figure out how to get the reversed course to show up as an activity. I found another site that claims to be able to take the course data an export it as a gps: http://gotoes.org/strava/Export_GPX_File_From_Garmin_Connect_Course.php
I tried this, but when I then tried to import the reversed exported back into Strava, it said it was a duplicate of the original course and wouldn't accept it, so now I'm stuck.
Only other thing I can think of is I will try to send the reversed course to my Garmin 910xt.
