Route Builder - Add POI and Waypoints

Hi there,

In order to better documentation of a route, It would be nice to be able to insert Points of Interest or Waypoints, with name and description. Also the idea of having a set of icons for a way-point it is useful, so this icons would appear in the map for easy reading (examples of icons: Warning, Bridge, Ruins, Views).

Thanks in advance.

  • I'm posting a route to my BTWD group, and this would definitely be useful for purposes of communicating regroup points for riders who aren't familiar with our routes.  Also it would be very useful to annotate with restrooms, water faucets, and especially dubious turns.  It would be great if it could be tucked right into the cue sheet, too.

  • Fresh Water source is definitely interesting information while route planning,  especially when you're going to explore new areas. Water tap availability might change depending on season/works etc, so in order to useful it must be possible for the user community to update and maintain the information.

  • Placement of drinking water fountains and other fresh water sources is key for planning out long trail runs through unexplored areas!

I would love to be able to see such data shared among all the users.

  • @Elle Anderson:

As per your request posted in the "Allow Waypoints in Route Builder" thread which you have now closed, I'm now posting here.

Please be aware that the topic of this thread is actually NOT the same thing as the topic of that other thread that you've closed.

This thread is talking about Points of Interest. The other thread was dealing with the INSERTION of way points / route points, after the fact, when you need to edit an existing route, which is currently virtually impossible without the ability to insert / inject new way points into the existing way point list, between 2 existing way points.

  • Agree, would like to have the ability to add POIs. Watering holes, rest stops on long rides (eg. organized fondos), etc.

  • Wow.  This request was opened 2 years ago and apparently still hasn't been addressed.  Does anyone from Strava actually read these posts?

  • The addition of water sources would be extremely helpful, especially in the route planner. The feature 'drinking water' can be view via http://opencyclemap.org, so I guess it should be relatively easy and straightforward to integrate this in the maps used by Strava.

  • I'm new to Route Building and the first thing I wanted to do is to INSERT a way point!

Am I missing something and is it possible?

A right click on the route allow to delete a way point. Adding a way point could be just there in that pop-up menu.

  • If you click anywhere on your existing route BETWEEN existing waypoints, then drag the line to another location and drop it, you will see that a new waypoint is created for you at that drop point, between the 2 existing waypoints.

You will then have 3 waypoints, instead of the original 2, and you can repeat that process for each route segment, effectively creating smaller and smaller segments.

You can then drag those waypoints around to get the route to conform to exactly what you want.

It's not exactly obvious that's how it works at first glance, but it does work. It caught me out at first too.

  • That's great. I should have thought about it! Problem solved.

Thank you for taking the time to write and explain it,

  • Related to this thread is the ability to add a POI (water fountain for example) to routes you create but also after a run, adding the ones you discover.

I run in Dubai so plan my routes around known water fountains but I’m always discovering new ones that I’d like to share with fellow thirsty runners!

  • Adding these to routes would be great, but it occurs to me that since Strava uses map data from OpenStreetMap, they could AUTOMATICALLY pull this data from there.  There is a datatype in OSM called "drinking_water" that denotes the location of fountains, there are thousands and thousands of them in there already.  Likewise public restrooms are notated in there with a point amenity called "toilets".

  • Obviously-useful feature request is five years old.  I don't think the problem is lack of available data!

  • POI's are a must have when planning routes. it's good for other riders to know where the coffee stops etc are. These can be downloaded to Garmin/Bolt whatever your choice and give riders accurate information on the road.

    Strava??

  • Adding a waypoint via an extra right-click option on an existing route is a no-brainer! it's maddening that any click adds a waypoint to the end of the route. Amazed that this hasn't been added :(

  • There are no apps which feature waypoint/POI creations anymore. So this could be really an exclusive feature for Strava. It is really a pity that this thread is now 6 years (!) old and nobody from strava has commented on it. Seems like DC Rainmaker was right with his recent rant… :-(

  • Now that routes can be synced to Garmin, having waypoints would be especially helpful.

  • Just logged into route builder and despite a somewhat new look to coincide with all the recent changes and route builder going behind a paywall I still see it't impossible to add a new way point within a route  - this was the request in this post https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/208855487-Allow-Waypoints-in-Route-Builder?page=1#community_comment_218589187

This would make modifying or extending existing routes via duplication SO much easier  - you should be able to hover the route and right-click to add a new way point (or two / three) to be able to expand out a section. The post above has been lumped in with this one. Surely this is easy to add - please?!
