Ability to Set Private Goals

I would like to have a "private/public" option for goals.  When I set goals I don't necessarily want anyone else to be able to see them.  Having goals is part of my training which I prefer not to share.

  • Simon, thanks, but what a horrible work-around. I just stopped setting all goals two years ago. They are worthless when broadcast to all my followers. Stupid move Strava. You have the fix, change the default to PRIVATE, nobody wants their goals to be PUBLIC. Perhaps we should follow "George Deacon" and LEAVE PREMIUM until this is fixed?

  • Oh come on Strava - this thread is ancient and the fix is easy - you've finally promised to look at filtering all those stupid challenge notifications out of peoples feeds. Surely you can add a simple public/private setting for goals????? I'm done with Premium until you start listening to your users.

  • Yeah, at this point it looks like willful neglect. They've admitted that its not a priority. Really? I get these eMails with Strava stories and all I can think about is that more meaningful things go unanswered.

  • I too would like to be able to make some of my goals private.

  • Hey James (and everyone),

    Would your consider a 3rd party tool? Strava is really awesome about having an open API so developers can build apps that access your Strava data.

    Private goals would be great, but I also want to be able to plan my weekly goals for a few months ahead. Would anyone want to demo an app or website that lets you do this? I'm working on a project but would love some input.

    Let me know!

  • It's a bit corny when people threaten to unsubscribe if they do not get what they want, but yesterday I was notified about updating the credit card to pay annual subscription ... but decided to wait. Premium does not have so many advantages. Goals had been something to pay for, but I do not use Goals just because it's not possible to put it privately.

    As a comment to Strava's comment at the top of this thread, the problem is just that the Goals becomes Social... and we don't want that :)

  • I canceled my premium membership because of Strava's arrogance and willful neglect of this particular issue.

  • And I just set a billion goals and spammed all my followers. :/ Now I look like a dick. I'm not setting goals for my followers!

  • Please reconsider the option for private goals. The reason I don't set Strava goals is because they are public.

  • This is feature I'd really like to see too. I would like to set my own goals, but not for everyone to see !

  • I have just started using the goals feature, not realising that it would be broadcast to everyone. This is rediculous and like a lot of other people, I am now questioning whether or not to carry on subscribing to premium membership. Surely for most people the goals are personal training targets.

  • I'll be waiting to renew my subscription until we can mark goals as private.

  • So I just deleted all my goals - will wait for Strava to implement privacy until I bother with them again.

    This really is an epic fail own behalf of strava - as a developer myself this should not be hard to implement on top of existing logic. Here's some pseudo code to get you started:

    class Goal {

        boolean isPublic;

        ....

    }

    void renderGoals(List<Goal> goals) {

      foreach (goal : goals) {

            if (goal.isPublic) {

                renderGoal();

            }

        }

    }

    Hope this helps Strava !!! Ping me if you'd like any other pointers

  • Yeah, David, it almost feels like it's a philosophical decision like, "This is a social platform so goals must be public." It certainly can't be because they are unable to do it. If so, scary. I have to keep an Excel doc with my goals on them, just like I did before I came over to Strava.

  • If a feature doesn't make Strava more money they don't prioritize it. Plain and simple.  Maybe when a developer gets bored they'll eventually get to this.

  • Hej Strava do you listen? I have set goals now, but I DID NOT WANT FOLLOWERS TO SEE THEM. Privacy option, PLEASE!

  • I'm glad I'm in a trial period. This was the only reason why I wanted to try strava premium. Let's face it, the other premium features are available on other apps/services for free.

    I would love to set my own personal goals but I'm afraid I don't want the whole world to know. When you've sorted this out strava I may sign up for a paid account.

  • I am commenting here just to add another voice back to Strava requesting that goals have a privacy option.  No need to say why as the reason has been repeated here multiple times and I completely agree.

    I wonder how many people have to make this request Strava before you will actually prioritize it since we are your paying customers.

  • +1 from me. Please add option to create a private goal.

  • It's strange that the API seems to have recently been locked down so that you can now see your own stats but no-one else's (presumably for privacy reasons) and yet your goals remain public. I too won't set any more until I can set them without spamming other followers. A privacy switch would be so easy to implement. You do wonder if this is no longer a training app and is now just a social showcase.

    Come on non-Strava developers, there's a huge audience out there who want a whole host of features that Strava seem unable or unwilling to fix.  Make us a better Strava and we'll be sending our premium subscriptions to you.

  • Now that Strava heat maps are potential national security risks, are you going to consider making ALL public features toggle privacy/public...like goals? I can see a big law suite here, especially since this type of feature has been requested for for years while Strava ignores it.

  • I vote for having the ability to make goals private as well.

    I would think the motivation behind keeping goals public is due to the social nature of Strava being what drives it’s success.

  • Between the inability to set private segment goals, and the inability to change the default setting on live segments (to chase my PR instead of someone ahead of me) I am doubtful I will renew my Premium membership once the free trial period ends.

    What a joke, and a complete lack of value, from Strava.  They truly do not give a crap.

  • @Mark Sinnot

    I agree with your comment about the goals but I have a wahoo bolt and I can chase my PRs or goals. There is no option to chase a 'rival'...maybe this is a difference between wahoo and garmin rather than a Strava issue.

  • I'd like to add my support to this request.  When I set a goal, it's a personal goal, I don't need/want it splashed on the activity feed dashboard.  It should be my choice, just like I currently have the choice to make a route public/private.  I'd saying making a goal private is MORE important/valuable than making a route private.

    Mahalo ElleA for bringing this up 4 years ago. I hope the Strava development team are re-assessing this on their priority list of features.

  • I totally agree that there should be the option to make goals private. This is an essential feature, and the public nature of posting goals prevents me (a paying customer) from using it.

    I can see how Strava - from a business perspective - wants social features to be shared as widely as possible.

    Maybe the current Facebook privacy debate will make Strava rethink their strategy a little bit.

  • I fully support the request for users to make goals private if they so choose. It is to say the least disappointing that the issue has been open for 4 years without action.

    Given the privacy travails of other social  networks, it is perhaps time for Strava to have a rethink.

  • Big +1 for this feature. I enjoy many of the social aspects of this platform, but would rather share my achievements than my intentions.

  • Another vote for private goals.  I recently went premium but I won't be setting any goals until I have the option to make them private.
