"Interactive" Training Plans

Hi,

Although I think that the training plans are great, I think that they could be awesome!

One thing that I find difficult, is to follow the plans while running, because:

  1. I don't have a watch that tells me my stride, distance, etc... (I have a Fitbit Charge HR);
  2. Looking constantly at the (Android) smartphone screen is not an option.

The competition does this in a very nice way. When you open their app on the same day that an exercise is planned, you get:

  1. Description of the exercise;
  2. Asks you if you want to start that exercise now, or postpone it;

Now, the biggest advantage, to me, is that if I choose to execute my exercise, while I run with my headphones I get instructions as to whether I should be doing, for instance, short strides, and when I'm done with them, it will let me know that now I can rest, and then will warn me once again when I need to get my speed up.

This is a huge advantage, specially if the only useful info you get is from your smartphone. This, naturally, will also ensure that the workout will be associated with your training plan, which I think is also that you cannot do now as well.

I hoping that adding a screenshot as reference from the other app does not violate any guidelines (it feels it does, but I am terribly sorry if it does, I am only trying to help). In any case, I've removed the app name from the screenshot.

  • I agree with this idea. I used Endomondo to train for 5k runs, but since they planed to destroy their product with the new design I decided to join Strava.

    The workouts are great, but the fact they are not integrated with the app is a big minus. I have the exact use case from above. I don't have a sports clock and I track using an Android phone because I listen to USMC cadence songs or other military songs and it will be great if Starva will stop or lower the volume of the music and tell me something like:

    "beep beep - 1 minute low intensity"

    "beep beep - 5 minutes cooldown/walking"

    and so on.

    I also could not find a way to manually prepare an interval workout on Strava.

    PS: the screenshot above is from Endomondo, just so you know.

  • Adding these functions to the app would be great. Even the bare minimum of being able to see your training plan in the app would be a start.

  • One other thing that Endomondo does well is personalization of training plans. During a training plan it schedules monthly (I think) 12minute Cooper tests and updates paces dependent on the result. Using this pace data they also provide updated race pace estimates - which really provides something to work towards. I don't see that there is any reason that the same couldn't be achieved using McMillan's training pace calculations.

    In fact I'm a little confused as to why it is neccessary to use McMillan's website to calculate our desired training paces, surely this can be reasonably easily integrated into Strava?

  • This would be a major upgrade and feature -- has it been ticketed / in que with the development team? Would love to find out if they are working on it.

  • Yes, this feature would be awesome to add to strava!

  • This feature is the only reason I still use Runkeeper (which is worse than Strava in every other way). Please add it!

  • Totally agree. Even the feature of executing a training plan on your phone and the Apple Watch would be a great start. This is a pretty basic thing for such a great training app as Strava in my opinion.

  • So sad that it gets to be hilarious... No idea why Training Plans are not even remotely integrated with the Strava app... Oh well. Going back to the competition :)

  • +1 for personalized training plans, it’s the only thing keeping me at Endomondo.
