Feedback for Running Races

Featured Running Races on Strava:

From the Explore tab, you can find a list of our currently featured races. Click on a race to open the race page and join.

On adding a new race:

We currently have an internal system in place to add races periodically using an algorithm based on the race's popularity amongst our athletes. This is reviewed several times a year but at this time we are not able make any promises that we can add other races manually. Please check out our current race list and keep an eye out for new events as they are added. We are constantly working to improve the Strava Races feature and hope to be able to add more races in the future.

  • So I see a this discussion has been going on for months.  I have requested a number of races to be added without luck. I see Strava promising that they will improve the process or functionality to add races, but I see no action yet.

The current processes of user having to request, and Strava to add races, who only add races apparently when (a) they have time and (b) there is a significant demand for a specific race, doesn't work, especially for non-US races.

I think the feature is great and will attract a lot more users if we can add the races ourselves.

  • +1 for adding triathlons (at least the Ironman series), and also for community curation to allow the race collection to be scalable

  • Thank you for adjusting the date of Nantes Marathon 2015, France.

It is taking place on April 19th 2015, not on 9th as indicated in the list (https://www.strava.com/featured-running-races?utm_source=top-nav)

    Could you modify please?

    Thanks

    Thanks

  • Thank you for adding Athens Marathon (8 Nov), but could I point out that Athens is in Greece and not in the USA, as incorrectly stated in the list? The race website confirms that it is the marathon in Athens, Greece, Europe we are talking about. Thanks!

  • I dont realy understand point of having the feature if site admins dont really care much if info they put in is correct.

I have reported 3 months ago that date for Poznan Half Marathon is wrong. It is not 4th of December but April 12th. Race is taking place in 3 days and nobody cared enough to fix the date...

  • @A Fourage, thanks! Just changed it.

@Lukasz, I'll work on getting the Poznan and Dublin Marathons corrected. Thanks for the heads up and thanks for your patience!

  • How long in advance should we try to add a race manually in order to have a better chance for it to be considered for addition? And what is the latest before a race that we stand any chance for it to be considered for addition?

Is there a minimum set of attributes that need to be satisfied in order for a manually added race to be considered for addition? (e.g. distance, online information, website, website language, etc)

What are the plans for making it easier to add a new race?

  • Is there a more structured way to request data fixes to featured races?

The London JP Morgan 5.6km race appears to be listed as a 6.45am start instead of a 6:45pm (18:45). I assume that's why none of our results are showing up.

Also, it's actually being run as two events (one on the 8th - which you've added - and a duplicate event on the 9th - which is missing - as the number of runners was so great). I know some runners who are doing the 9th have already signed up for the 8th as there's nothing for their day. Hopefully there's a nice easy way you can create a duplicate event (after correcting the start time of course :).

  • As a secondary request, how about the ability to have repeating races on the list. I'm thinking of races that repeat weekly or monthly etc. rather than annual races.

For example, there are hundreds of parkruns raced every week (and Strava and parkrun do have some kind of alliance) and while it wouldn't be fun to have to add them each week, it would be useful to have a race set up that auto-repeats each week. We can join the ones we intend to race and not join the ones we're missing etc.

Additionally there are many monthly races (locally we have a 5 miler run every second Sunday of the month), and while these are less frequent than the parkruns they are going to be a pain to keep adding them manually, an auto-repeat option would be useful.

Finally, not necessarily repeating races, but races that form a series. Again, we have a series of 4 cross-country HMs each year and while it's not mandatory to race each one, being able to see totals, aggregates, averages or series bests would be great...

  • Most race event have multiple distances. It would be useful to be able to select the event and then the distance. For example, the Ottawa "marathon" weekend has a very popular 10k. Same thing for the montreal marathon, where the majority of participants race the half-marathon. Some have a quite wide range of race distances, If at least we'ld have something for the 10k, 21.1k and the 42.2k it would be greatly appreciated.

  • The Sydney City2Surf is one of the largest participation running events in the world but there is no ability to tie the activity track to the race.  Whilst you can nominate a race as a goal there is nothing after you have completed the event to allow you to see how others have performed against their goal.  The race feature has huge potential but it is not comprehensive enough in it's post race analysis.

  • Could you add the 5k & 10k races that will take place together with the Athens Classic Marathon on November 7th (2015)? ( http://www.athensauthenticmarathon.gr/ )

They are really popular races, having sold out just a couple of days after the start of registrations. In fact a second afternoon 5k race was added due to the race's popularity.

Also, can someone get back to me on my questions raised in this thread on June 15, 2015, 11:52 AM?

  • The curation of this list bites.

First off, "because I'm running in it" isn't considered good enough? Why? If I'm a premium member and the race has open registration, then it should be added. End of story.

Why not let Premium members add races and the community flag anything that is inappropriate or spam?

I've never had my submissions accepted, including big things like the upcoming Polar Dash in Minneapolis. It kinda pisses me off.

  • No races in Minnesota. Not posting any suggested races. No responses from Strava support on anything.

    This feature is not functioning.

  • it is very very sad that you mainly support only races in USA. Many great races in Europe are not found.

  • Hi, the course for Brighton Marathon Apr 17th is messed up. It seems to follow the proper course, then has an extra 10 miles added on the end (including a crazy hill), but still shows the total distance as 26.2 miles!

Also, it would be very helpful if your races page had a filter by country.

  • It would be great to hear about your plans, or at least indicate that you are working on this feature. I agree with the previous writers that you should enable "crowd-adding" races, since the current list is very limited (and with a strong gravity on the US). I can see that a couple of popular Swedish races where mentioned over a year ago, and are still missing. I have also suggested a few races to add through the form, and have still not received any feedback (needless to say, they are not added to the race list).

Please, give us a hint on what is happening here, and feel free to invite the users to co-create the content.

  • Hello Elle Anderson,

When this feature will be available to cycling?

  • I would love to see a feature where members can add races. There are so many races missing from the Strava database, including some pretty major ones. The feature feels half baked with the small selection of races currently available.

  • To expand on my last post. Many of the large race series in the United States (Rock 'n' Roll, runDisney, etc.) don't have all their races listed, there are some, but not all. With such a poor, and strange selection of "supported" races this feature feels really lacking and poor.

  • I would really love to be able to try out this feature, but it seems like it pulls from a very small selection of races (and primarily races based in New York or California). It doesn't seem like it would be hard to make this a database of most of the major races. One of the big surprises for me (living in the mid-Atlantic) is the omission of the Broad Street Run in Philly, which is the nations largest 10-miler, with about 40,000 people running annually. I also haven't seen the Philadelphia Marathon, which I believe is the 8th largest marathon in the US.
