Challenges

This is the post for all feedback and feature requests related to Strava Challenges.

How to format your new idea and/or feedback:

Feedback that is actionable and constructive is most effective. When sharing, please consider the following when framing your thoughts:

  • If you have a new idea, it's helpful for us to understand why that feature is important for you and the value it will bring. For example: I want __. It will allow me to do ___. The reason that is important is because of ___. An example of when I needed that was ___.
  • Specific examples and details that illustrate the problem/confusion you are experiencing. For example: When I do ___, then ___ happens and that is not ok because ___.
  • Screenshots that help visually illustrate the problem. For example: Here is a picture illustrating my point ___ from above. See how ___ is doing ___?
  • An explanation of why this is important. For example: This is important to me because ___.
  • If you propose a solution, an explanation of how that solution would help you and why that is important. For example: I think a ___ would be great because then I could see ___. This is important to me because I have to ___.

If someone has already suggested the same idea as you, you can help us quantify the demand for the feature or improvement by upvoting the original comment. To upvote, click the up arrow on the right-hand side of the comment.

  • Can you at Strava look at these requests related to people asking for a way to turn off / hide Challenges and notice of people joining challenges from their feed?  I see this request as the most frequent request and more support (higher # of 'yes' comments) on this request than any other.  So, please give us a way to not see any notice of a Challenge in our feed.  They are just a clutter for people who do not have any interest in them.

  • The running challenge leaderboards are a joke. They're full of treadmill runs that are obviously fake or the result of badly calibrated equipment. Strava ought to filter those out, or just remove treadmill runs from challenges altogether.

For example take a look at this activity. It was on the December 10k running challenge leaderboard. The pace is faster than the world record for that distance. Obviously not real. Maybe users aren't deliberately cheating but watches are extremely inaccurate for measuring treadmill run distance.

  • I would like to suggest what I'd call challenge overflowing.

The point of challenges is to encourage people to exercise more, to do an effort so reach a given goal. In my opinion, for someone who runs 250k per month, a "run 100k" challenge is not a challenge. It's easy for him/her.

The overflow I'm suggesting would be that once you reach a point beyond (to be discussed) the challenge's goal, you get hidden from it's leaderboard and are automatically added to the leaderboard of the challenge with the next higher goal. If you fail to reach that goal by the end of the challenge you still get the previous challenge's badge.

    Example:
Some assumptions : There are challenges for running 100k, 200k, 300k and 400k in a month. I run 11k per day every day. The overflow threshold is 25% of the difference between the lower and the higher challenge.

On day 10 I win the 100k badge. On day 12 however, I pass the 100k + 25% = 125k threshold, so I'm removed from the 100k leaderboad and added to the 200k leaderboard. On day 19 I win the 200k badge. On day 21 I pass the (200k-100k) + 25% = 225k threshold, so this time I'm removed from the 200k leaderboard and added to the 300k leaderboard. On day 28 I win the 300k badge. On day 30 I pass the (300k - 200k) + 25% = 325k threshold, I'm removed from the 300k leaderboard and added to the 400k leaderboard. On day 31 the challenge ends because it's the end of the month. I get the highest badge I've won that month, which is the the 300k badge, and only that one, not the 100k and 200k badge.

This way I've been challenged to keep up my efforts to reach a higher goal. This way the 100k badge remains reserved for less talented/experienced runners for whom this 100k really is a challenge and who now have a bigger/realistic chance of ever reaching the top of the leaderboard because it's no longer bloated by runners for whom this distance isn't a challenge at all.

  • What has happened to Strava's user interface of late? I used to be able to see the Challenges that I joined, and could see my progress.

Now, when I click on Challenges at the top here in the desktop website, I just get a huge load of massive tiles promoting new challenges for me to join or register for. I don't really want that. I want to see the Challenges that I'm actually in.
Strava doesn't seem to want to show me that at all, I can't find the option ANYWHERE in the interface.
Changes made to Strava in recent years have made the interface so confusing and there have been features removed. This is why I stopped being a paying subscriber. I have no idea why Strava wants to make their website and their app so awful and confusing to use. I think I might be better off just leaving it.
Why not hire an interface designer who cares for intuitiveness instead of making everything obscure and pointless?

  • @Jo Rau  " to include the e-bike segment." ..... wouldn't it be better if you had your own challenges ? I agree it would be added motivation for you, but there is a reason e-bikes aren't on the same leaderboards as "real" bikes.

  • Frederick....from reading the info the answer seems to be no. It seems that the first one is a triathlete training camp, so you have to be part of that. And  the other one is, according to Google Translate, a bit confusing...first the event link  says the event has been cancelled, then it says there is a virtual race, and then there is something at a famous running circuit in japan ? The challenge info seems to say it is at the athletics stadium, which happens to be a Strava segment.

  • Set up a club (Emigrating from Facebook group and google sheets) with that challenge of completing the year (2021 in this case) in distance. However, there is no way to show members distance for the year even though it is calculated by strava on each members individual page. Multi sport also shows time rather than distance. Being able to either join or set up a distance challenge over a full year is really needed.

  • I really enjoy the Strava sponsored monthly challenges because they are a big motivator for me to achieve them.

It would be really nice to still achieve them even if your activities are not set to "Everyone". Even if you don't get to participate in the leaderboard. But I think it's still a great motivation to work for it personally and get the trophy in your trophy case.

  • Is it possible to have a feature where a little list/table is generated, showing active challenges?

It could then show the dates, and the progress bar for each challenge.

This would help make people choose exercise to target certain challenges, and add a competitive edge!

  • I would like to be able to share a particular Challenge with my Club. This would assist me in encouraging Club members to join and complete a Challenge.

Currently, the only way I can share Challenge information is within friends. I want this expanded to be able to share among members of my Club.

  • Hi,

I live in an area with a tonne of Mountain Bikers using strava. Most of the Biking Challenges are focused on Road Riding. Could we have different Activity types for road vs mountain biking and have challenges specific to just those activities?

    Thank you!

  • Bonjour,

    br / community / posts / 360073465732 / comments / 360013023551

I would like you to only take into account the creation of standard walks as they do with standard Strava races .... I think there should be at least standard challenges so that people who are not able to run can complete these challenges and feel motivated.

    - Walk 05km
    - 10km walk
    - Walk 15km
    - Walk 20km
    - 50km walk
    - Walk 100km
    - 300km walk
As an example we only have the challenge of April 50km, could not have more challenges like that by default ...?

  • Premium users should have the option to select which activity (cycling, running, swimming, etc) on their profiles so that only Challenges specific to their activity would  be offered. It’s important because it’s relevant and reduces unwanted interruptions. It woild also be quite easy to do.

  • Add a "consistency" challenge, as opposed to total distance, time, etc.

As a regular “staying healthy” user with friends on Strava, I want to create consistency challenge with friends such as “3 exercises longer than 20min per week” or simply “3 runs per week”, so that I could engage friends frequently with some meaningful social activity and make lightweight commitment to building fitness habits.

  • - badges; why not standard 15k for running; standard badges for swimming, standard badges for training-time?
    - why are other challenges so hard to find (only a few possible via the site)

  • Request:  Additional distance challenge for Walking - 100 km (or 75 km)

I regularly complete the 50 km walking challenge before the end of the month.   This month, Oct'21, I completed the 50 km on Oct 11; I currently have 85 km through Oct 26.

Yes, I have my weekly goals set up to meet, but as a 60+ "athlete", it gives me great joy to show off my Trophy Case to "The Grands".  They are very proud of me.  I would love a finishers badge that more accurately reflects my activity.  (Just to Note:  I also regularly complete the 400 km Cycling Challenge.)

  • I would love to see annual challenges that are similar to your monthly ones, e.g. Run 2000 miles in a year. Better, run the year in a year (2022 miles in 2022).

     Vielen Dank!

  • I think the cycling climbing challenges should be reserved to real rides. I know modern Smart Trainers do wonders but a virtual climb is not the same as a real one.

If that's not possible you could add a selection button the allows us to select the real rides only.

  • Is it possible to include e-bike category for the Gran Fondo and the monthly riding challenges??

  • In following with the request to structure the request:

I'm looking for monthly rowing challenges which are similar the standard running challenges (these are created it seems by "The Strava club".  I realize in principle these are really actually the same as individual monthly "goals", but ultimately, the same could be set for running challenges. There should be monthly challenges (100km,4 200km, 500km), there should also be individual challenges like 10k, 21097m and 42195m for a single session.

This can help people to get motivated for training efforts in the same way that running and cycling challenges helps.

Alternatively, how to we as create a club that would be able to set challenges (in the way that Strave Club does it?)

  • Why aren't there any winter sport challenges this year? I really enjoyed the February Snow Sport Challenge last year and was hoping to see more of this, not less! The only winter challenge this winter has been a Salomon nordic ski challenge that ended in mid-January before we got a decent amount of snow in Ontario. Running and riding challenges are great, but we could use a little more diversity in the sport options across the whole year!

  • Hi Karl!
I often find challenges that don't show up on the challenges screen via other users.

There's a Le Col Finding Form challenge and a XC skiing challenge by Swix both starting tomorrow (5th February).

    Happy training!

  • Hi Peter Thomas! Thank you for your feedback on the Challenges interface and I apologize for the trouble finding your Joined Challenges. I will pass along your feedback to our Product Team. However, please keep in mind that from the Challenges page on web, you should be able to scroll throughout the page and find tiles in the gallery that show "Challenge Joined" - referencing your active or upcoming challenges. Example:

Additionally, you can also see your joined challenges from your Strava dashboard (https://www.strava.com/dashboard) on the righthand side of the page. Example:

    I hope that helps!
