Add direct Support for Samsung Gear devices

As Samsung Gear devices are becoming more popular, there should be a direct support for these devices.

I know there is a link between the S health app and Strava but there are issues with syncing the workout data to Strava. Also, S health does not export HR information which I believe a lot of people care about.

This is why I think there should be a direct support for the Gear devices

  • The problem is that SHealth syncs to Strava only for Android users

  • When Strava properly supports Gear I'll go premium . . . because until then Strava is failing to be a premium product in its sector

  • A word of protection for Strava. After using Gear S3 for a while I realized that they are useless as a sport tracker device, except maybe running. I tried to use 'Sporty watch' app - it's very good itself, but the hardware ruins everything. I couldn't use it for any of my hobbies, except maybe running (which is at the bottom of my list).

Cycling? Useless, the screen is blind on a bright sun (especially when wearing sunglasses), the speaker is not very loud and you can barely hear a thing when riding, unless you are using bluetooth headphones.

Swimming? Is not officially allowed by the user manual.

Any winter sports? Absolutely useless, battery level drops to zero after an hour in relatively warm weather (-5C).

The only thing it's decent for is running (built-in GPS allows to leave the phone at home) - not really much for $400 device.

And on top of that there's a total lack of hardware controls, the UI is completely touch-oriented and is actually terrible.

As for me, I completely understand why Strava doesn't want to develop S3 app, it will be a waste of time and money. Just buy garmin, or polar, or whatever is working with Strava already - that's what I'll certainly do sometime.

  • I'll agree with the last poster that my previous Garmin Forerunner 235 was better for activity tracking in general, but the Sporty Watch  watch face (which he mentions as well) has made my Gear Sport functional again. It is a $3 watch face (not an app -- something to do with how watch faces use less power) by Stefan Thomas and it syncs directly with Strava (including heart rate) -- no need for Samsung Health as a middleman. I've only used it for runs and hikes so far, but I would definitely recommend it over the glitchy solution Samsung offers.

  • Strava should see the phenomenal Gear S3 as an opportunity to smash the competition (Garmin and Polar), and to persuade hundreds of thousands to go premium Strava membership.

No other smartwatches can touch the Gear S3 right now:

    • Only the Gear S3 has a large bright LED display (the others are LCD), and it has an “always on” mode.
    • Only the Gear S3 has wireless charging and 4-day battery life.
    • Only the Gear S3 has the patented rotating bezel; try it; you’ll love it for menu selection.
    • Garmin and Polar are let down by hardware; they don’t have wireless charging!!  Garmins top models have massive bezels.  Polar struggle to make an attractive watch and haven’t kept up with R&D; they’re still on black & white displays which kind of sums it up.
    • Apple watch looks awful; it’s square!  And, too small for large-font pace and HR data.

By the way.  S-Health isn’t a running app and it never will be.  You can run it side by side with Strava on your Samsung phone.  It calculates distance inaccurately; it has been consistently 5% short on my test 10Ks.  Strava have painstakingly honed the way they calculate distance from GPS data. If you’re preparing for a race you need accurate measures!  5% error is not acceptable.

I want to wear my watch on a run, not my phone!

Strava should aspire to join the “big boys” who automatically support new platforms as they become available (e.g. Uber, Spotify, etc), because new platforms can take off, and then all onboard ride the wave of success.

  • I would love to see a Strava app for my Samsung Gear S3 as the syncing between S Health and Strava has been very hit and miss. I have downloaded Sporty Watch although I haven't had a chance to run with it yet. Does anyone know if it still counts your steps while you are running or adds what you have done while you are using the watch face to your daily total? When I opened the Sporty Watch face app it was showing 0 steps so I was a bit confused.

  • > "Does anyone know if it still counts your steps while you are running or adds what you have done while you are using the watch face to your daily total?"

Although "Sporty Watch" is not technically an app, you use it like an app. I typically use a different watch face for the majority of the day. I only switch to "Sporty Watch" for a run/ride. It works like an app in that once you begin, it keeps track of the "current" activity which it will sync to Strava once your workout is done.

In the meantime, Samsung is keeping track of your daily steps in the background. In fact, during the workout, the watch may be hidden by the notification from Samsung that you have reached your step goal. One thing I did have to do was disable the "automatic workout" function that was included with my Gear Sport. If S-Health sensed I was active, it would being a workout and "take control" of the GPS and not "share" the activity data with Sporty Watch. Currently my watch only tracks steps and sleep. For activities, I either switch to Sporty Watch for a run or manually initiate S-Health for a non-Strava activity.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • Thanks for the reply Eric, I will give it a try when I run again this week. I don't suppose you know whether it supports any other Bluetooth chest straps other than the ones on the list?

  • Yes...Both Samsung & Strava have to shed off their differences for the benefit of customers.

    Please release a native app.

  • Once I have subscribed to premium Strava and cancelled because my moto 360 couldnt upload heart rate data to Strava. Now I am planning to buy a Samsung Gear Sport and I was considering to subscribe premium again but what I saw here was changed my mind. No premium unless native Tizen app.

  • Strave, you really need to up the game and add the Samsung Gear S3 & sport watches to the line up! at this stage whilst sync via Samsung Health is an option when using the watch with a Samsung device this is not an option for those of us with a Samsung watch synced to an iPhone. The iPhone Samsung Health app has not option to sync with Strava.

Please tell us you are at least planning to create a Tizen app for Strava users who have the Samsung Gear S3 or Sport. Add a whole lot more Strava users to your lineup please!

  • Even just a button that allows you to instantly export the data would be beneficial. My data seems to sync the following morning.

  • Samsung health to strava delay is common with long runs (over 10k) is a hit or miss thing.

On the short runs and training data is always different between apps.

Strava read less distance and faster paces that what really was....

    Any work around this?

Also I can't find "sporty watch" in the s3 app watch face gallery. Where can I look for it?

  • This lack of support for Samsung Gear watches is puzzling (I have the S3). I'm begining to wonder if it isn't due to some deal Strava has with another company. In any case it renders this amazing watch almost useless for cycling. I'll soon drop premium as the benefits don't exist without collecting data from this amazing device.

  • Hey people, stop begging. Try "Under Armour Record" for s3.
Records your fitness with HR & gps, etc. Then syncs to their respective apps, rides to "map my ride" and runs to "map my run" etc. And for those who still want their data to go on strava use SyncMyTracks android app that can sync data between most fitness apps.

  • Another vote for a native app. The Strava sync works almost instantly during the day, but night runs don't sync until after midnight for my Gear Sport. Even if the sync worked quickly at all times that would be ok but it's quite annoying having to wait until the day after to look at my Strava stats

It's working good for me so far.

Need some fine tuning but overall is working

  • Doesn't look like anyone has commented here for some time but I am hoping I can get some help.

I have the Strava app on my Gear S3 and my phone.  When I go to workout, do I need to start a workout on my Strava app at all or will the Sporty Watch face automatically sync my data to Strava when I start the workout on the Sporty Watch face?

Also, right now the watch shows my internal heart rate from my watch sensors, but I want to have the watch face show and record my heart rate during workouts from my Polar H10.  How can I have it so when I am not working out the watch face shows my heart rate from my watch sensors but when I workout have it switch to tracking my heart rate from the Polar H10?
