Can anyone provide an explanation as to why Strava does not include users walk/hike data to totals?

If I do a 30k walk/hike why does that not get added to total weekly/yearly distance travelled?

It forces users to list walks/hikes as runs and thus corrupts everyones overall user data. It also makes Strava's assumptions and calculations on uses personal fitness way off.

To me this is inexplicable considering every other major app does this. However, I understand there must be a reason, many people on these boards have discussed and asked for it. Can anyone provide an explanation as to why Strava refuse to add this?

It is the single reason I will not pay for pro.

  • Come on Strava, let us know what the current status of this is. Is it being implemented? Are you planning on doing it? The only official comment on this post states:

we are working on better support for all our activity types this year, which includes more inclusive profile stats. Please stay tuned.

This does not explicitly state whether or not you will be adding walks/hikes to totals.

I think the community would appreciate an update.

  • I come from an area very strong on race walking - almost 2000 people in a population of 80,000 take part in race-walking - as hard and taxing as running.   Many of the race walkers also run and cycle, yet there is no way of comparing walks and segments.   It is over a year since Strava said in effect "watch this space"

I train for race walking at over 600 miles a year, as do many others.   Garmin provide a Speed Walking option, please get to it Strava.

  • Over a year since this post was made and we are still waiting. I take part in walking and running challenges and want to be able to filter my data easily. Unfortunately I am still having to save all my walks as runs so that they show on my training calendar. What exactly does Strava have against walking?

  • Hikes and walks should count towards total distance! Duh.

  • Cancelling subscription as they’re not even bothering to give an answer. Shame.

  • Hi,

I believe besides keeping stats on Bike riding, Running, and Swimming Strava should allow you to keep track of a selected other sport such as Walking.

  • Strava, any idea on this feature will be implemented? It is tiresome not being able to tally walks

  • Another vote for this! would also be good to have walking challenges too.

  • Strava is blatantly discriminating all the sports that are not running and cycling. (and swimming, but I doubt that Strava is actually very popular among dedicated swimmers. GPS does not work in closed pools :).

So, by Strava logic, when I commute to my workplace by bike, that activity deserves a circle in my training log, and that time is calculated towards my weekly active time. But, if I climb Mount Everest, that's only some XT below the line, and those hours and kilometers are not counted on my profile. Yeah! Very clever, Strava! And very inclusive ;).

I'm definitely not continuing my premium subscription!

  • Still crickets on this? 16 months after Elle Anderson's official response that something might be coming soon and to stay tuned? :(

  • I tweeted them about this all I got in response was "Thanks for your feedback! We'll take note of this for future enhancements!"

  • WTF? As a multi-year premium subscriber, why is this even "a thing"??? If we can select 'HIKE" when beginning to record a hike... why TF can't we see those miles / hours in our training Log?

Ridiculous. This deficiency, plus a number of cruddy updates (feed organization is a mess now) are making me think about packing up and moving on.

  • I stumbled upon this thread because of the same question and must conclude that "stay tuned" means hang in there for at least 18 months?

I use Strava for rides and walks, no runs so far and also no swims. Being a software developer, I wonder : how hard can it be to hide the swim & run icon and add the walk icon to my activities, based on user preferences?
I mean the walking activity is tracked, the data is there, it is just not added or displayed based on my preferences.
Maybe Strava is attempting to add the ultimate set of activities and will release this as a huge update, but maybe better to add simpler features like these in a gradual fashion?

I'm just amazed this takes so long for pretty essential features like this to be implemented while in the mean time experimental features like heat maps and fly-by's have emerged.

  • I just submitted a ticket to Strava for this issue.  I'd encourage everyone else to do the same.  It's a lot easier to ignore a community thread than a bunch of open tickets.

  • Yep, hiking is HUGE in HK. I bike, run, hike. Sadly, switching back to RunKeeper.

  • I track all my walks nowadays as „runs“ and it shows up on Strava with all the details. That way I can take part in challenges and get the most out of Strava while walking.

It’s not perfect but it works.

  • Another vote for this. Just done 15 hilly miles but Strava not counting it in my totals as it’s a ‘hike’. Don’t want to cheat and call it a run. Please add this feature

  • +1 for this.  I've used STRAVA for years for running and cycling but now I'm back on the hill after a long hiatus I would really feel STRAVA should be more inclusive.  Now that there are more multi-sport watches that can record this information as standard it would be good for this to be represented in our training time on STRAVA.

  • I seem to have the opposite problem where I want my Hikes excluded from my weekly Activities totals.  Is this because they were originally recorded as runs on my Garmin 235 and then I changed them to Hikes after they were uploaded?

  • Just had to change indoor rows to runs and hikes to runs to get the stats I need for an 80 day challenge. Questioning the point in paying for this is it really that difficult for you to change this Strava?

  • Come on Strava, do you want my money or not. Sort out the walk stats or at least let us now why you are ignoring everyone who asks about it.

  • I'm not sure as a walker and hiker if it is even worth being on Strava anymore. I really think the site is dope, and love to use it, but almost every other tracking site gives you walking/hiking stats. Seems a bit ridiculous to not if I'm being honest. They let you track it, but you can't do anything else with it. Weird.

  • It's pretty crap that Strava won't respond to this. I used to be super fit, using Strava to record runs and cycling for both competition and training. Now I've slowed down a bit due to various things and back on the hills since last year but would like to keep the same platform (I'm one of the mugs that pays for extras too) so that everything is kept in the same place. If Strava won't respond to this long thread with constructive support it just shows they are ignorant and really not worthy of the money I pay. They evidently look down on folks that aren't running and cycling hard.
