Add better support for Swim data to Strava

I am thinking about buying a Garmin Swim, but it is pretty useful if it cannot upload it's data to Strava. Is there a possibility that Garmin Swim will be supported?

edit: THANKS TO ALL THE SPORTERS REPLYING IN THE THREAD AND OF COURSE THE TEAM OF STRAVA!!! SWIM UPLOAD IS POSSIBLE FROM NOW ON!!!!

Strava Support edit: Although Strava currently accepts Swim data from Garmin devices, this forum can still be used to collect feedback on improvements we can make to allow swim data to be more useful and better displayed on Strava, for both swim metrics and swim activity data. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Edmundo - I have no such issues.  As soon as the ANT+ agent is finished copying from my Garmin to my local machine, Strava can see it.  Please know that Strava (or any other website for that matter) does actually "see" your device... they "see" the activities folder your device has created under your app data on your computer.  As an example, on mine what it actually sees is whatever exists under C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Devices\{device id}\Activities

  • +1 on request for full swim support within the Strava application.  This includes device files plus support for non-GPS swims (like entering a swim in yards or meters, not miles or kilometers).  I have enjoyed Strava and am a premium member, but I have to say that I am surprised by the number of requests for swim support and the relative lack of commitment by Strava since this thread was begun in October, 2012 (19 months ago).  This is disappointing, at best.  Strava - IMHO you need to publish a swim feature roadmap with some target dates.  I'm sure all of the members here understand that you have to prioritize resources, but the lack of movement suggests that adding swim features is not a priority for Strava at all and hearing that you hope to make progress after 19 months of little progress, feels disingenuous.

  • Being able to load up swim data is great, but I would love to be able to record my laps etc. and take all the data from my Garmin Swim to do analysis of my workout. It would be super as well if there were challenges and leaderboards to compare times, stroke lengths, speed etc. I appreciate all may not be possible and it is great now to have all my training in one place, but I would like to not have to use Garmin Connect at all to track my swim performance. Once again a big thanks to all on the team at Strava as I have said before if Facebook is worth that price then...

  • Strava, please add more swim features! Would be awesome to see it tracked under sports.
And support for fastest 25m,50m, 100m and so on.

  • My two biggest complaints with Strava swim support:

    1. Strava only uploads my workouts in yards, even if I swam in a 25 meter pool and my Garmin 910XT recorded my workout in the 25 meter format. This makes my pace per 100yd (which should actually be per 100m) look awfully slow.

    2. Strava uses my total elapsed time as my total moving time. So if I stop for short rests at the end of every set, and stop my watch, or go to refill my water bottle (and stop my watch), Strava doesn't recognize this. Again, this makes my pace look awfully slow because Strava counts my total swim time from the moment I initially start my watch to the moment I finish my workout (and reset the activity), regardless of whether or not I pause (start/stop) my watch a few times here and there. Strava seems to know the difference between total moving time and total elapsed time for running and cycling, so I don't understand why the same can't apply for swimming.

    Strava help!

  • Hope we all noticed that strava has added lap features for swimming.

    Good progress.

I am sure they will add more soon.

  • It's true that Laps have been added although they're not totally accurate.

I'd still like to see a couple of quick (and easy) improvements to see Swimming added to the overall profile:

    1. Weekly Progress bars to include Swimming and

    2. On My Profile, Swimming added as a Sport - the total last 4 weeks activity number already includes it, so it looks a bit odd.

Must be easy to do quickly?

    THANKS STRAVA!!

    Paul

  • Hi STRAVA team,

Why am I not longer be able to see my swimming activity graphs? For example: http://www.strava.com/activities/158370391 shows only the laps. About a month ago I was able to see both graphic and laps on all my swimming activities.

Thanks for your patience, your site is great! Best regards.

  • +1 for adding swim goals and having swimming as a tab on My Stats.  I'm a long distance swimmer who also cycles & currently use Garmin Connect as my primary training log as Strava is woefully short on swimming features.

Also Personal Training sessions logged don't get included in my multisport weekly totals which is a bit irritating (but potentially a separate thread)

  • I love Suunto compatibility with Strava! But i miss a swim and Triathlon mode very much! if i want to see segments on my tri i have to select bike for everything and my swim i can not see. i would go premium for proper triathlon, swim and brick training support.

  • I would also like to see the option to import swim workouts from a suunto ambit watch..

  • +1 for Suunto Ambit support for swimming data!!!

  • Stroke type and accurate times would be nice; there's no way I swam 25yds in 4 seconds...wouldn't that be cool, though?

Also, showing paused/rest times would be helpful. Basically, all the information that Garmin Connect gathers from these files, but in the awesome Strava interface.

  • I have a Suunto Ambit 2S... I'm able to upload bike rides, walks and runs but no swim data...is there anything out yet??? It would be very nice!!!

...or is it working only with a GPS work outs?

  • Better support for swim data (Garmin 910 in my case) would be very much appreciated!

Also functionality to edit duration and length of swims would be very useful, as GPS data of open water swims is often not very accurate.

  • For some reason my workout on strava registers as fewer yards than recorded and actually swum.  I swam 1500 --fenix 2 recorded 1500, garmin connect registered 1500 and Strava registered 1475?

  • In this case Strava calculates distance based on GPS information it's own way, so it will always have a slight difference between Garmin Connect (and your watch). Same goes for elevation when cycling or running.

Kindly Reminder for Strava Staff: There are lots of people interested in decent swimming activities support. Would be great if someone could at least acknowledge that it is or not in their plans.

  • GPS tracking is great for rides and runs but most swimming is done in a pool and manual inputs are going to be the most common.  I would like to see more data from manual swim time and distance entries.  At least estimate the number of calories burned.

  • It's actually rather surprising not to see Strava support for swimming. Please add the feature.

  • I'll add my voice to better swim support! I'm currently using a Suunto Ambit3 Sport, and while my runs and rides are automatically exported and imported into Strava the swims get left behind. Luckily I can export to FIT and import into Strava manually, but then all the swimming statistics are gone. Only distance, time, pace and HR are visible. No heart rate graph, no  stroke data, no nothing. I also would love to have swimming up there on the profile page next to running and riding!

Oh, and a little bug: the box for 'indoor' still says 'trainer' when I edit an activity on the 'My Activities' page.

  • Swim data from my tomtom multisport shows up as time and distance only. Would be very interested to see more metrics such as SWOLF scores.

  • I will continue to echo what others are saying - please improve the swim functionality of Strava.

I am using a Polar V800 and there is only limited functionality for that as yet - the firmware update is promised for the end of this month.  However, what it does do is record the HR whilst swimming.  Strava will not show this when this data is identified as a swim.  However, if I leave the data as a run in strava (even though it is really a swim), then all my HR data is shown, with a nice graph, just like when I am running or cycling.  Strava clearly accepts all this data then, but chooses to discard it if the activity is identified as a swim.  That seems completely pointless and very irritating - why discard data that is there when the system clearly recognises it?

  • +1 on swimming stats.

Uploads from my Tom Tom Multisport contain lots of swim data, but only distance, time, and pace transfer into Strava. I think it would be more useful to have pace in minutes per mile. Also, it would be helpful to include a distance vs pace graph, as well as lap split times.

  • Integrating the swim into the new "Fitness & Freshness" analysis (so that a swim effects form, fitness, fatigue) would be great, although I realise that'd be icing on the cake to other more fundamental additions.

I have little doubt the team are working hard to make the following happen; just like they have with many other advancements. From a business perspective tapping into this market is a logical next step.

  • I don't use a fancy GPS watch, but I'd like to be able to input an interval length and time as well as pool length. These can then add up to a total time and distance. I also don't like seeing my average time per km, I'd rather know it over the pool length. I hope this is easy enough to implement; it also avoids compatibility issues with external devices.
