Mountain Bike as separate activity type or tag

Please add mountain biking to the list of activities in the app because the cals vs speed are very different from road riding. Also a count down to workout start would be a good feature.

  • completely agree - should be nice to have the possibilities to split the segment ranking between road and MTB.

  • Jeez. 5 years to implement Mountain Biking as a seperate activity or properly facilitate it??? Not cool!!

  • When can we expect any change in favour of mountainbikers?

I think it is already positive the fact that you opened an questionaire, but is there any time frame that can be indicated?

I am looking forward to it. That is the missing piece for me to become premium.

  • Sorry Andre,

This discussion was opened by a user 5 years ago - Not by Strava.  There was a post a year ago by a Strava employee to say that they were working on it but nothing happened.  I do not believe that it will.  There are not enough MTB enthusiasts on Strava to make it economical for them.  Its their business, and they can do what they want with it.

Possibly we need to find an application that suits us, or ignore the performance and KOM functions.  In any case, the scientific functions that are the key points in Strava like power and heart rate are less relevant in a technical discipline like MTB.

  • Agree with most of the comments in this post, seriously Strava, more than 5 years and almost nothing has been done

It is not the same doing 20K in a mountain bike ride /track than 20K in a light/easy road bike track.

Any suggestions what app is good for us mountain bike riders?

  • Agree that strava needs to distinguish road vs off-road segments - surely that should be easy enough to do (the map shows you the roads).  That might not be 100% accurate, but it would be 500% better than what's currently there.

Also, in segment explorer, how come you can filter for climbs (U, C1-->C4) but not for descents?  It would be good to know which segments are likely to be full-on knarly DH (ie. steeper than -20%).

  • Bump. Its ridiculous that here are 3 or 4 types of skiing activity but only one biking activity.

  • Good to see e-bikes are supported now. Half a decade later and you're still sh*tting on mountain bikers. Ridiculous.

  • @Dave Potter,

" In any case, the scientific functions that are the key points in Strava like power and heart rate are less relevant in a technical discipline like MTB."

You make an excellent point. This is, of course, why e-bike riding and kite-surfing are supported, but not MTB.

  • Yep, separated MTB activity please. It can't be difficult?

Other planner apps such as https://www.komoot.com display and give surface types by %.

I export strata gps files and replan using Komoot, which I follow using Komoot on iPhone.

  • Well clearly Strava cares about MTBikers. They did a survey. 8 months ago. Maybe in another 4 years Strava will have a MTB only challenge and badge. You know, to show they care.

  • 2018 and still no mountain bike activity.....

My newly featured trophy case is desperately empty. Maybe next challenge for strava should be about its mountain biker base....

  • Five years since this topic started and one year since they added the (apparently useless) poll. Not a single thing has changed.

    Ugh.

  • Yvan, it's just ridiculous how fast they did to é-bikes what we ask for mtb. I don't understand these priorities honestly, but they just ignore one of the biggest group of athletes.

  • Dear Strava People,

I would prefer the subcategories Asphalt and Offroad for the Cycling category.

    Route Builder:
My current issue with the Route Builder is that it wants to direct me off the road quite often while planning for a trip with the roadbike. Maybe because I have used the MTB for my last activities(?). Another issue was when I set just two points for a 50+km route. The Route Builder works nice and much better for me than Google Maps but in this case it wanted to send me through an offroad downhill and uphill section which is demanding even with the MTB and I was planning for the roadbike. It is just a kilometer but impossible with the roadbike. If you do not notice this while planning you would sit on the road and searching for an alternative on the phone which is annoying. (I speak from experience...)

    Segment Explore:
The map is already small and roadbike segments suppress MTB segements and vice versa.

Global Heatmap / Route Builder Heatmap:
Difficult to spot interessting places for your specific bike.

So, I would prefer a check box with the three options "Asphalt, Offroad, Both" for the Cycling category. I would not like to split Cycling into completely new categories because I want to see the overall sum in Avg Rides / Week and so on.

    Have a nice day!

  • Totally need this, especially for the segment explorer. As it stands I find it very difficult to find new trails.

  • Elle, seems I can't find the post that I had submitted about 2 years ago on this topic but it is amazing that this has been a five year conversation and nothing has changed. Do we need to submit to our local mtb associations to campaign to flood Strava with comments of dissatisfaction? You have had plenty of intelligent resolution's and have implemented none. What are you doing with our premium does? I don't care about the challenges....I want a fair accounting of our mtb miles...

  • This is crazy.  It's been 6 years and Strava still hasn't found a way to separate mountain biking from road cycling????  I've read through the posts and I agree that there are a lot of different application/calculation/route/segment/etc suggestions that would be fantastic and that would take lots of time and thought to implement, but come on, how hard would it be just to allow us to specify "Road Bike" or "Mountain Bike" in the meantime???  I'm tired of getting my butt kicked on the leader boards in my MOUNTAIN BIKE groups because some of them are road bikers as well.  I know I am killing them on the trail km's, but when they go out for a 50 km road ride, it brings them to the top.

  • I think we need to raise more awareness on this. Obviously this is not being taken seriously. Possibly let's change our profile pictures to the text
    "MTB as separate activity"

  • So why staying with strava then?

Strava is making money by selling (anonymously hopefully) our GPS recordings to urban city planners. All people being displeased by the disdain of strava for mtb riders should stop providing data.

I know moving account from one service to another is cumbersome but it should be possible.

  • @Gianni Martilli - you don't need premium for photos. There's very little in premium of value to MTB.

  • Totally agree that there should be a separate MTB activity and respective logo. I now always refusingly select the road bike logo.😉 Same as forcing a snowboarder to select a ski logo! When will this be available in the app?
