Attach a Route (map) when entering a 'Manual Entry'

It is really frustrating when a device destroys your data!!! In my case an 18 hour ride and nothing to show for it.

What do we do .. only solution at the moment is to add a Manual Entry.

Currently there is no image of the route taken when adding a 'Manual Entry'.

If we could import a route (gpx or  select one of 'My Routes') it would greatly enhance the entry.

Note: no time data would be available from the file ... that is expected.

  • Martin, you wouldn't need a cell signal to record a ride on your cell phone. It uses the cells GPS so no need for the signal from the cell phones carrier.

  • Steve, I did not realize that my phone had a built in GPS chip. Unfortunately that doesn't change the fact that I cannot get the GPS feature on my phone to locate me when I ride out in the boonies (I've tried several times with no luck at this point). I would love to be able to log the workout manually and match it with a route.

  • Just use the route builder and exclude the data from any KOMs, challenges, etc.

  • I concur.  A route that I have taken that has been recorded before for some reason today decided it was only going to record half of the actual travelled route.  Oddly, the last half.  A simple (edit route) feature so I could manually plot the starting point up to where the data began actually recording would be fantastic.  Everyone understands errors can happen, but a simple feature to manually correct the map would be a good enough solution.

Another even simpler addition would be to allow us to upload an image for a manually entered route.  That way we could manually plot the map, like you can with runningmap.com, snap a screen shot, and at least save an image of the route to go along with the manual entry.

  • I switched to strava from map my ride because my son convinced me it was better...he was wrong.  In map my ride, I can manually draw up a route and then log a workout including start and stop time and get basic calculated data such as average speed.  In this app, I can draw up a route, but I cannot enter data for a ride on the route in which I have no gps data.  I even tried exporting the route into a gpx file and then importing the route back into a manual entry but was denied because the imported route lacked speed information.  This is a terrible limitation and it will drive me back to map my ride.

  • We have enough people asking for this feature, but I don't see any comment from Strava. Is there any way to let them know what we think? This feature would make a big difference in the app.

  • The workarounds like creating a GPX file in another site and importing it will work but is more fiddly than it should need to be.

  • Don't waste your time guys. Clearly Strava aren't interested Not very professional at all, are they? I'm looking for other ways to upload onto other sites. As soon as I find something I'll let you know. in the meantime I'm going to use mapmyrun or some other rather than this uninterested website. Very disappointed in them.

  • Of all the things Strava could add, surely it can't be that difficult to have a 'completed' button on the route planner which turns it into an activity. I don't use my phone for internet stuff when I am on the move, would rather not spend money on it using GPS.

  • An even better feature would be to be able to enter several routes at the same time, and have them displayed on the map in different colors (Everytrails does that for instance).
I often ride on routes that I don't know, following other's tracks. Sometimes, I link several of them. Sometimes I follow the tracks of past official events, and it's nice to have the 2011, 2012, and 2013 edition tracks displayed on my screen at the same time to see the differences and follow the one I want.
And even more, an offline map function would be great too.

  • I was using MapMyRide but switched to Strava as I've heard good things and it seems to have a bigger user base....but without this feature I'm going back.  As others have said - there isn't much point to the very nicely designed Route Builder unless you can use it for activities as well.  I suppose there's some issue with not including the manually entered times in leaderboards, etc. but come on, Strava, at least give us a comment telling us whether you are working on this!

  • I agree with all of the above. Forgot to turn Location Services on and did the ride. Time logged so manually "added" the route, which gave me the distance with an estimated time (I guess based on previous rides). Imagine my surprise when I couldn't add the route to my ride like all the previous ones. Gutted. Perhaps there's just not enough call for this, or it's harder than we think OR, Strava thinks this would make a good Premium feature !!??

  • Like a lot of people here I also use the manual method of tracking my commute to work and would love to be able to attach my own routes.  I think I'll have another look at mapmyride and rejuvenate my old account there.....c'mon Strava, you know it makes sense!

  • This would be a great feature because when you run the same route regularly you don't need to rely on GPS data (which on my route often go wrong).  I can just pick a route and use my recorded time.  Easy.  Done.

  • The GPS data in some locations has me running 3 k in a minute. So have to bin the run. Manual Entry of the map would be great. I have recently moved from Runkeeper to Strava, Love strava, but miss the manual maps....Alos a link to fit bit

  • Thanks for all the feedback folks! I really like this idea too. It's a natural step to take now that we have the Strava Route Builder.

    Please keep your feedback coming!

  • I just had this happen to me again today too!  About halfway through my ride the tracking cut out - I didn't know it until I had my ride done.  Now I've created the route but lost all my details of speed, heartrate, cadence etc.  AND I can't even have it show the map when I add the manual activity.  Really need to improve in this area Strava and the sooner the better!!!

  • Another request for a timeless manual route entry. I rode 170 miles and probably over 9000 ft yesterday, only to have my Garmin 500 lose the data. To import a mapmyride, or similar, would be a great addition

  • Please make a feature like this! I did a 342 km ride but somehow the file is screwed up (because i powered off and on due to power meter issue) and will only show the first 108 km when i upload it, even though it shows the correct data when looking at the activity on my device.

  • On Endomondo you can go to a build your route section and the map is really easy to use. You click way points and build your route. It even does off road routes. It doesn't give elevation though so this could be an innovation. I went out yesterday and forgot my phone so just kept a note of times at certain points and when I got back I logged the route on endomondo. The map is drawn and the distance measured. Strava needs this function and build in the elevation gains too, please!!

  • Another casualty of iphone failure, come on strava let us use our routes for manual entry.

  • Had a long run tonight. Long story short, the data pulled from my Garmin has huge gaps. Created a route (that filled in the gaps) and added a manual entry (that reflected the correct time and distance). Except I can't attach that manual run to my created route! WHY NOT, STRAVA? Seems to me like there's enough of a demand for it...

    Helloooooo! Are you listening?

  • My second post here.....My phone's GPS didn't kick-in until I'd ridden a couple of miles into the ride and so I've had to manually add the part that was missed but of course I can't prove the distance as I can't attach my route.  Surely this must be a relatively straightforward feature to add?

  • I lost an activity due to bad satellites on my Garmin. Here's what I did and yes it's a little bit tedious but the only thing that worked. I uploaded the route (I had created for uploading into my Garmin) into... runkeeper. Still have an account there. Created an activity based on that. Over there you can edit the route in your activity (add stray miles ha!). After that I synced Runkeeper with Strava with https://tapiriik.com/. Took some time but it worked.

  • This needs to happen.  I'm a recent convert to Strava from Map My Ride after being convinced by friends to join, but not being able to upload maps to a manual log is poor form.  There can be lots of reasons for wanting this feature - dropped GPS...battery running out...not turning on location services...not having GPS device with you...going abroad...saving phone battery for emergency use only.  I don't care if it doesn't count towards segments or challenges, I just want to be able to record where I've been!

This post is 9 months old with ZERO feedback from Strava.  Sort it out or it looks like you'll be losing valuable customers who care enough to give feedback.

  • Me again...my battery went flat today. Just needed to add in the last 5 miles. I'm not sure what is better about strava than endomondo. It's the segments I guess. C'mon give us a manual entry!!

  • I'd leave Mapmyride if Strava added this capability - it's the only thing that's stopping me from completing the switchover.  Seems like such an obvious 'feature', I can't really grasp why it's not in place already.

  • In addition, I would like to be able to upload a GPX file into "My Routes" for future use. When I ride charity rides they provide a GPX file, but I can't get that INTO Strava for me to use the Strava app for routing when I actually then RIDE that route.

Pretty simple really........ it will be a future ride, and I have a GPX file for it.
