Strava for Adventure Motorcycle and Moto-X Communities

Recently, I did an experiment with the Strava App during a dirt bike ride through Ocotillo Wells.  As suspected, the Strava App worked great, minus the obvious—“Calories” burned.  I suspect that this might be in question since I was not wearing a heart monitor, and I was not riding my bicycle.  That said, I really see an opportunity to service a whole other market that is lacking the level ease and detail Strava can provide.  What I am suggesting is a re-brand, sister app (based on the current Strava App) specifically targeted for the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider.  This off-shoot of the popular Strava App would maintain the current features, update the algorithm for calorie consumption, and provide the user with a setting to account for laps automatically. The new feature of accounting for laps can provide increased detail; with split times, best lap, average lap time etc… thus providing a training tool that I foresee many riders would take seriously. By providing this capability to the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider, Strava can easily establish itself as the affordable, premier GPS athletic activity tracking option for motorcycle enthusiasts.

  • What does it take to get this added? it's not like everyone that uses this, or even a fraction of them come on here to chat about this on the support forums. Can someone from Strava chime in?

  • I'm a ROR programmer (sounds like this is what Strava is built on) and I was thinking about the logistics of this feature. As a suggestion to Strava I would almost consider rolling out an entirely separate app for motorcycles. Duplicate your app, strip out the features that are unnecessary for moto and roll it out with a new name like Strave-moto or if you don't want any association with Strava you can call it whatever you'd like.

    • This would allow you to have two completely different stacks that won't effect each codebase
    • You won't end up offending your hard-earned cycling/running user-base with a moto-based option
    • Any legalities can be dealt within an isolated app
    • You can build up a new moto-based client base
    • Ability to share data between apps means that a more complete (further-reaching) trail network
    • If the name is completely different then the risk of diluting your brand loyalty is less
    • a conversion of cycling/running to dirtbike/atv/4x4 or something could be possible (how amazing would this be! Seriously consider the HUGE increase in target-market!)

Just my two cents. I hope you guys are listening to this thread because I honestly believe that their is a serious opportunity here. The only other problem is gathering the funds and resources to do it, good luck.

  • So I do.....mountain biking, cycling, dirt biking (trails), dual sport, and occasionally ride the track. Garmin Connect is great for seeing all this in one place if you want or filtering it out, if you only want to see certain things......

Would be nice to see it all in Strava, for the benefits Strava has over Garmin Connect. But until then.....

  • Thanks for the outpouring of feedback on this topic! Love seeing all the comments and passionate folks out there.

I'd say that a separate Strava app just for the "motorized" community is pretty unlikely. However, we have a range of Activity Types already available within the app, and each type has it's own autonomy - meaning they don't share segments.

So, creating a new Activity Type for motorized bikes/motorcycles would have it's own suite of segments and wouldn't interfere with other cyclists. Is that something that would work here? What would you want to call this new type?

I'm not sure what we could do for an auto-lap feature, but it's feasible. I think it's also feasible to disable our current estimated watts and calorie calculations for activities in this new proposed category.

In short, let us know specifically what you'd like to see, and that will give us the best information to assess the demand going forward. Thanks!

  • Elle,

Creating a new activity type is what I have been asking for all along, I'm super excited that it is being considered.

I would suggest naming it "motorcycle"
I would also suggest copying the bicycle activitys format, I use the same data used in bicycle as I do for my motorcycle training. The sport of off-road riding is very similar to mtb.

Feel free to look at my strava account, all strava outside of jasper is done on my dirtbike.

  • Thanks Elle,

Yes that would be great. A "motorcycle" activity would be great. And the ability to create segments, have leaderboards, and see the vital stats would be awesome. I do wear a heart rate monitor and use a Garmin Edge 500 on the motorcycle. So stats of interest would distance, time, elevation, ave speed, and max speed. Like Mountain bikers, we would be interested in the following types of segments; climbs, descents, and loops.

    The above would be Fantastic!!

    ---------

Now Icing on the cake would be a the ability to see "Ride" separate from "moto" on the training log. So I could see how much I'm riding on bicycle vs. the motorcycle. Almost every motorcyle racer trains on a bike (either road or mountain.) This could even be done in the Training Log, by either adding another check box labeled "include Moto", much like the "Include Commutes" checkbox. Or we could just mark all moto rides as a "commute" to filter these miles out of Rides. Just an idea.......

If you add this activity type. I'll pay and go premium:-)

  • Ellie! I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to know you are listening. For training purposes the lap feature and calorie is absolutely critical. There are many types of offroad riding where lapped timing is essential. Both in motocross racing and hair scrambles (both have national and world wide competitive pro classes) have laps in them. If the calories runs off of a heart rate monitor band, it will only help us try to get more fit as we put in more seat time.

Please include both of these features. To summarise, what the others have mentioned about it being and using all of the same features as mountain biking would be amazing with one exception, WATTS. We dont need watts. But everything else would be epic.

    Wooohooooo

  • Awesome, thanks Ellie! Basically we'd just need the same features as cycling, minus the watts. If you really wanted to get fancy, you could do a motorcycle/motorize bicycle, a 4 wheeler/ATV, and a snowmobile type for winter. That would really rock!

Auto laps would be cool too. On the track, much like a crit race, velodrome, or bmx bike race.

  • I  use this app to track my MTB'ing and Dirt Biking adventures. If you could make a separate activity for Dirt Bikers/Adventure riders it would add another group of clientele to this app!

  • Hi Elle, it should be enough add Motorsport activity with the same features of cycling but without power stats. In a second level (gear selection), being able to assign the activity to MX, Enduro.

I'm using MotionX-GPS app to track my Dirt Bike session and then I upload it to strava like Alpine Ski... the only downside is Motion X does not include heart rate in the GPX file. This way I save my cycling statistics uncontaminated.

It should be easy for Starva Team! Thanks if you consider this.

  • I run, cycle, and race dirtbikes. I have found Strava works great for timing my laps on motocross/off-road tracks. However I use cycling as the activity and thus adds mileage to my cycling stats. I would love if Strava added a dirtbike category.

  • Just started using Strava, and echo all the sentiments here. I run, cycle and off-road motorcycle (mostly byways) and use Garmin Connect; Strava is obviously great for the first two as it automatically takes all the data from Garmin, but I have to delete all my motorcycle rides after becoming KOM in several different instances (and before annoying the previous KOM on each!). It would be great to still retain the heartbeart function, but I'd accept basic functionality just to be able to track my previous rides and see how other people compare!

  • I've been hoping for the same!  As a very active woman in motorsports I would love to use Strava to record on-road motorcycling, off-road motorcycling and car routes.  Please please please add more activity types so I can use this great app for all my activities!  Thanks for listening!

  • This definitely needs to be implemented.  It's only been a bit over a year, c'mon Strava!

Currently I just code off road races as 'workout' but I see others that leave them as bicycle rides, so it screws up leaderboards when multi use trails are used, get the moto ride flagged, messes up challenges if the moto rider is also a biker/runner that participates in them, etc.

Of course, Strava could also add some algorithms and flag a 'ride' automatically if someone goes uphill at a pace that isn't humanly possible.  That should also be done to get the car rides home out of the bike leaderboards and would have the added benefit of helping filter out moto rides from bicycle rides.

  • I'm an avid cyclist who also rides dirt bikes. Like many others, I've been wanting to track my moto rides on Strava.

Based on the number of requests for this feature, Strava either isn't listening to the community, or has an anti-moto bias.

Having asked support for this myself, and gotten the following total bullshit response, I don't think I'll be renewing my premium membership. I'm pretty fu*#ing pissed off after getting a response like this:

    "Hello,

Sorry we're not able to meet your needs at this time. Features that are put on our product roadmap for future development are determined based on a number of factors, including input from our users. Our Product focus is to serve Athletes, so it's not likely that we will add functionality for motorcycles in the near future. Again, sorry we're not able to meet your needs.

    Best,
    Sheila
    Strava Support Team"

    Focus on Athletes? Really?

These are more athletic than moto riding?

    Crossfit
    Elliptical
    Ice Skate
    Rock Climbing
    Stair-Stepper
    Yoga

How is Stair Stepper, or Elliptical, or Yoga even a Strava-able activity?

I don't see ANY requests for some of these activities, but they made it.

Do a search of the community feature requests, and there are:

    15 results for "moto"
    12 results for "motorcycle"
    24 results for "dirt bike"

I've defended Strava time after time as being about more than just stroking one's ego with KOM's to all the anti-Strava haters in recent years, but now I just feel like finding another service to use.

Yoga is more "athletic" than motocross? Fuck you Strava

  • I do not know why Strava do not want to help us with this Moto Subjet.

Maybe is a legal problem but I do not understand what is illegal about going fast on a motorcross race track.

Maybe because they personally love the bikes and they feel bother by motorcycles, but seriously, how many bikes do you see on a motorcross race track?

We will have to keep waiting or find another app

  • Just use another category.  I save my moto rides as 'workout'.  It's not just this request Strava is ignoring, there are many.  I agree with others, stop paying for premium until they show they're listening to users.

  • A Strava rep a while back said they'd do this, but they haven't. I am an avid cyclist, but I also use strava when riding moto, and I used it a week ago snowmobiling. (We just do "wind surfing" as the category.) If strava doesn't want to offer anything for motorized vehicles, then maybe someone should just make the exact same app for motorized vehicles. If Strava isn't willing to support motorized vehicles then they have no protection against someone making the exact same app for dirt bikes, atvs, utvs, snowmobiles, or any ORV...

STRAVA, either make new categories based on need, or someone is going to make a knockoff app...

  • We made a segment of our local motorcycle trail and so far I have got 11 friends to join Strava. This is just 1 trail in a town of 8,000 people, exploring other places I see dozens of motorcycle routes... There is real market for this, we need a motorcycle specific routes!
