Strava for Adventure Motorcycle and Moto-X Communities

Recently, I did an experiment with the Strava App during a dirt bike ride through Ocotillo Wells.  As suspected, the Strava App worked great, minus the obvious—“Calories” burned.  I suspect that this might be in question since I was not wearing a heart monitor, and I was not riding my bicycle.  That said, I really see an opportunity to service a whole other market that is lacking the level ease and detail Strava can provide.  What I am suggesting is a re-brand, sister app (based on the current Strava App) specifically targeted for the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider.  This off-shoot of the popular Strava App would maintain the current features, update the algorithm for calorie consumption, and provide the user with a setting to account for laps automatically. The new feature of accounting for laps can provide increased detail; with split times, best lap, average lap time etc… thus providing a training tool that I foresee many riders would take seriously. By providing this capability to the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider, Strava can easily establish itself as the affordable, premier GPS athletic activity tracking option for motorcycle enthusiasts.

  • Yes, please add motocross/dirt bike as an activity as I cycle and moto, it would be great to track separately. Also, a lot of dirtbike moto trails overlap with mountain bike trails.

  • I'd like this feature too. I dirtbike, enduro, harescaramble etc.  It could simply be called "motorsports".  Just a single category for those of us who also happen to train using motorized vehicles.  Later, if it proves to be popular and generates for pay users, then the categories could be tweaked to include specific motorized activities.  Until some form of motorsports category is added to Strava, I will not become a paid premium member.  It's an incomplete product for my purposes until this occurs.  Polluting other categories and competing in their KOMs etc, is unfair.  How hard can it be to add a single category?  There's one for e-bikes.. I'm sure you'd have a lot more participate in the motorsports category than you do the e-bike category.

  • My solution is now to use the ebike tag for motorcycle rides. After all, once a lowere source that isn't the rider is added to a bicycle, they're motorcycles.

  • Just email today regarding this same text string which has apparently been going on for 3 years now. Why bother telling me to come to the forums when it is obvious that you have no intention of making a simple added category. Looks like E-Bike is the way to go, even though it's a terrible solution.

  • Yeah I've been using e-bike also and it doesn't seem to affect other users of the app. Why they don't just add a motorsport category, or some other generic category, who knows.

  • Here's another vote for a motocross/ATV/Kart spot. Please, please, please.

  • Here's another vote for a moto activity. I've also been using ebike but it throws off my MTB logging.

This shouldn't be too hard and there's a lot of demand for it. Help us out Strava !

  • I'd love this, there doesn't seem to be an app that has the functionality Strava does. Would be perfect!

  • I'd like to throw my hand up as well for a "Moto" activity type.  I would love to be able to setup segments for some of the trails around here and track my progress on segments and compare myself against others.  I took another user's suggestion and have been using "Cross Country Skiing" for my moto rides so I don't screw up my own or others' MTB stats, but that seems like a silly workaround.  I've tried similar apps like Rever that are designed for motorcycles, but they just don't offer the performance tracking that Strava does...most seem geared towards navigation than athletic performance.  So please, please add moto.  It is a very legitimate sport just like mountain biking or the rest.  I say just clone the "Mountain Bike" activity and rename it and that should fit most of our needs!  Thanks Strava.

  • I would also like this feature as there are no decent motorcycle tracking apps around that supports exporting GPX. Rever is the closest one but to be able to export GPX you have to pay premium. Also if this feature is added the app may automatically tag those blatant motorized vehicle recorded activities to this one as to not interfere with KOM's.

  • Strava isn't listening, they don't care about a moto category. We have been asking for years, well before e bike category. I'll just keep using the bike category and let strava figure it out. So sick and annoyed how our sport is portrade from the elitist cycling community.

  • I'm so sorry to make you feel this way Joseph - it is not our intention to appear uncaring or disinterested about a moto or moto-x category on Strava. There are simply too many things already on our plate, so adding this feature is not on our roadmap currently. We appreciate all your continued feedback and know that this community post is on our radar.

  • Now that Garmin Connect allows you to create segments. And they have Motorcycling, with sub categories for Motocross and ATV. I've been using that. Works great for just me and could perhaps now begin inviting friends to see how they compare or similar segments.

With the two sub categories, I use Motocross for trail riding and ATV for my plated dual sport rides.

Agree with Joeseph, strava will not be adding a motorized category. Mainly for liability reasons, is my guess.

  • So it sounds like Strava isn't going to do this. I just got this in my email:

  • Anything to get moto riders to not tag their rides as bicycle rides would be an improvement. I am interested in checking out bicycle rides but could not care less about motos (except when they ruin mountain bike trails).

  • Today, fo the first time, I tried Strava on my motorcycle ride and quite frankly, that's awesome... Of course, I logged it as Ride, and got flagged because "it seems that I used an engine...". Of course, I did... I don't push my motorcycle...

Please add a Motorcycle option in Strava. Pretty please.

  • I see there is a check box that lets you remove your stats from leader boards (Hide from leaderboards) now when editing a ride.  A similar check box could be worded "Did you use an engine?"  And could similarly remove the results from the leaderboard.

I've just been logging my moto rides as workouts now.  My bicycle friends don't seem to mind.  Most of them like it.  Logging them this way works for me.  It would be nice to have it as a separate category and use it for keeping logs of hours and miles on the bike.  I may start trying "rides" and just exclude them from leaderboards.  Problem is, adding the WR450 to the "mountain bike" category.. max weight in that category is 151 pounds. lol.

I don't see why the hesitation to add this feature.  I know Strava employees are probably overworked just like all of us.  But I think this would be a good market to break into.  Dirt bikers and 4 wheeler riders like to spend money on toys and generally spend more than runners and bicyclists.  If profit matters, it might be worth looking into.  Strava already has the foundation to pull it off.  Want my money?

Luckily, I live in an area where ALL trail users get along.. moto, mountain, road, quad and even trail runners and equestrians.  I mountain and road cycle.  I trail run.  I moto on the street and trail.  So tired of the bickering between the elitists.  We CAN all get along and use the same trails.

  • Tried logging as a ride.. problem is, it adds to my overall mileage for my bicycle rides.  Not acceptable to me.  Needs it's own category. Back to just logging as "workouts".

  • Use the ebike category.  Motors are acceptable there.

  • Lauren Durbin: I don't like it when snowmobilers ruin my cross country skiing tracks. I'd be even less happy if they then took my place on the cross country leaderboards!

  • Adam Pearce: That would be unpleasant.  Would be nice to have something that's not a workaround.  No snowmobiles or cross country skiing in Oklahoma, so I think I'm safe here for now.  It's so strange to think that they have an ebike category, but not a sport like motorcycle riding.

  • Actually it's kind of weird that ebikes are addressed.  Isn't every other category human powered? At any rate ebike seems like a good place to also put motorized.

  • just so you know. Garmin connect has these features. its also possible to make your segments and leader board private and only viewable to your riding group/ club members. you can also download your segments in gpx format, something that strava doesnt allow.. even for paying members. those of us who own property with trails and paying members are all moving back to Garmin because strava has been ignoring segment privacy and leader board complaints since their inception.
