Strava for Adventure Motorcycle and Moto-X Communities

Recently, I did an experiment with the Strava App during a dirt bike ride through Ocotillo Wells.  As suspected, the Strava App worked great, minus the obvious—“Calories” burned.  I suspect that this might be in question since I was not wearing a heart monitor, and I was not riding my bicycle.  That said, I really see an opportunity to service a whole other market that is lacking the level ease and detail Strava can provide.  What I am suggesting is a re-brand, sister app (based on the current Strava App) specifically targeted for the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider.  This off-shoot of the popular Strava App would maintain the current features, update the algorithm for calorie consumption, and provide the user with a setting to account for laps automatically. The new feature of accounting for laps can provide increased detail; with split times, best lap, average lap time etc… thus providing a training tool that I foresee many riders would take seriously. By providing this capability to the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider, Strava can easily establish itself as the affordable, premier GPS athletic activity tracking option for motorcycle enthusiasts.

  • K2, Strava is way more feature rich, Garmin connect does not offer the same level of functionality as Strava. I wasn't trying to be a dick, it was an honest question. If he does not use Strava, and essentially only had complaints for it, then my question stands. Why is he here? The goal of this thread is to hopefully get strava to eventually add motorpsorts. There are tons of "alternatives" out there. Garmin Connect, Polaris has an app, MapMyRide, etc etc etc. None match the feature set of strava. (Hence why everyone is here.)

  • @Tom Wardrop only problem i've seen for ebike is it accounts for elevation gains which suck for challenges (kinda cheating, but then who cares lol). I joined a 'challenge' but a ride i logged on a moto marked as ebike gave me credit for elev gain so i opted out of the challenge, out of guilt.

But i'd say keep doing it so the devs finally create a moto activity type.  Butt hurt kom'rs can cry - its not the end of the world.

Strava: vote for activity type: Motorcycle

  • Sadly, I think that's the only way to make this happen; upsetting other app users. I just would have though it would be so easy for Strava to add a new category named "Vehicle" or "Motorised" or something else as generic to satisfy all non-human powered activities.

  • @Darin Chester

I know you don't care about KOM'rs, but I suspect Strava does since they often pay premium for the actual service Strava is trying to sell.

Now if anyone is competing for KOMs on an e-bike profile those aren't real KOMs anyway.

  • I'm seeing this as well. I don't have any problems with the moto guys riding the legal moto trails we have in the area, but when I'm riding them on my bike, I don't want to compare my efforts against theirs. What would be even better, in addition to the "Motorcycle" activity, would be for Strava to recognize that a user is traveling at unrealistic speeds uphill or on average. I'm sure we could say that 40-50mph is realistic on a downhill course or road bike going downhill, but an average speed of 25mph for 30 miles on undulating offroad terrain? A bit less so.

That being said, it's pretty fun knowing I'm beating their times going downhill. Suckas.

  • I see why Strava wants to limit these types.  There is very little control over policing if someone is using the proper type, then their activity gets flagged and their life is ruined, over a silly app.

  • Wondering why the poll has "minus".  Seems like a plus vote would be more indicative of what the community wants.  Minus votes just seem like a way for community members to "exclude" people or groups they don't like or agree with even though the inclusion of those groups would have no affect on the voter.

  • @David - it is because the "poll" is an absolutely terrible way to gather data on appropriate groups to add. If you look at it, horseback riding has a negative too. Why? I am guessing because the hard core users like cyclists and runners don't want to see these groups of people on their trails. This whole process is just making me lose respect for strata and its core user base. It is literally almost as easy as flipping a switch and they wont do it. Screw em.

  • That is pretty ridiculous. You can go along and downvote all of the other options.

  • It's surprising that Moto now has -42 votes, since I've seen a demand for this for several years now. How are some of the other types even a Strava'able activity? Hockey? Tennis? WTF?

Allowing negative votes has only let the haters counter other user's votes.

Based on the comments over the last few years alone there's enough demand for a Moto category. Not that hard! Listen to your users Strava.

  • Yeah, I've lost hope due to the "negative" votes.  Seems Strava just wants to cater to public opinion instead of actual demand for services.  I'll just keep logging moto rides as workouts on the "free" version of strava as long as it remains free.  So sad that haters can't agree to just let us all get along.  I welcome EVERYBODY on my trails.  https://youtu.be/BS8yvVPmr-4

  • Hey folks, sorry about the negative votes and please don't lose hope. It's likely we'll redo the survey soon with some better survey software. The recent post was just an experiment to see if there was voting interest and clearly there is!

  • Thanks Elle Anderson . I'll keep hoping for an all inclusive Strava.  I know it's hard pleasing the masses.  :)  Thanks for putting forth the effort to include us "deviants" in Strava's future.  ;)

  • Oh well, when I moto I just use cycling, let Strave and the community sort it out...

  • That's well and good, Moe, but unfortunately I'm flagging all the moto users on my local trails, even though they are legal to use them. Why? because I like comparing times (to other cyclists) to know where I need to pick up the pace, and even though on many downhills I can beat the times of the moto guys, there is no way I'm doing 30mph uphill.

  • Please add Motorcycle or Motocross, also more importantly snowmobile. You will lose me (as well as others) to ViewRanger. Keep your users and add more activities such as this please

  • I'm an avid cyclist as well as a moto guy... Paul H., please help us advocate for a moto option and you will not have to flag anyone...

  • @ Paul Heller

So instead of helping the community, you'd rather just be a dick?

  • Moe I'm right there with ya, man. I want other users to be able to log their times accordingly. I flag the Moto guys because its awful hard to gauge my progress and skills against cyclists when I can't determine whos got a motor or not. I guess the tough thing for Strava developers is that their app is a training tool, and some people use it like a racing tool.  I'm sure there is liability exposure in that.

  • Hi everyone, I updated the pinned comment with a new survey that doesn't allow down voting. Hope you can take a few moments to fill it out, thanks!

  • I've logged a few moto as private e-bike rides and I will continue to do so. Filled out surveymonkey form. Other moto-specific apps are far behind strava.

  • Just had a knock down drag out with my buddy who logs all his motorcycle rides on Strava in an area frequented by MTB riders.  All the leaderboards of all the segments are controlled by dirtbikes.  His position is "so what just try harder to beat our times".  My position is Strava is, and always has been, a cycling app first and foremost.  I see no difference between a dirtbike holding KOMs on forest service/fire roads (that requrie license plates), and trails than a streetbiker or car enthusiast running strava on the streets or highways, and dominating the (cycling) leaderboards.

So yes, STRAVA needs to include motorsports and filter them to their own leaderboards, OR re-build "STRAVA-MOTORS" or something and release that for use for people wanting to log and map those activites.

How has this not happened yet?

  • Yes please add an Adventure Motorcycle mode! Then I don't need to hide my tracks from those ones anymore!

  • Another vote. Also please to add a snowmobile category too.

Not everyone in the world is obsessed with KOMs and competing with random strangers on the internet - many of us couldn't care less, but just love using the excellent features of Strava for tracking our activities and seeing where other people involved in the same sport are going.

  • Hey all, I've been following this thread for a while and I think I may have a solution for you.  Its an app I created called Black Box Performance Tracker and its like Strava but it gives points for turns, elevation change and miles traveled, and its designed specifically for motorsports enthusiasts, (motorcycle, snowmobile, atv, sport bike, etc.).  You can even challenge you buddies to get the most points.  We just got it up and running again and would love to get your feedback, we are still in beta testing so any and all comments are welcome.  Just head to Black Box Performance Tracker.com

    Thanks,

    Scott Niewohner (Founder)

  • 4+ years later and still no motocross?! Garmin has a motocross setting. Smh. So I’ve decided to use e-bike.  How many people Kite-surf? Or even use e-bike for Strava?

  • Still very upsetting. Strava can you please add? You will be opening the door and increase your app usage to manyk more users I'm not sure why you guys can't just add. Snowmobile and MX would be great!
