Strava for Adventure Motorcycle and Moto-X Communities

Recently, I did an experiment with the Strava App during a dirt bike ride through Ocotillo Wells.  As suspected, the Strava App worked great, minus the obvious—“Calories” burned.  I suspect that this might be in question since I was not wearing a heart monitor, and I was not riding my bicycle.  That said, I really see an opportunity to service a whole other market that is lacking the level ease and detail Strava can provide.  What I am suggesting is a re-brand, sister app (based on the current Strava App) specifically targeted for the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider.  This off-shoot of the popular Strava App would maintain the current features, update the algorithm for calorie consumption, and provide the user with a setting to account for laps automatically. The new feature of accounting for laps can provide increased detail; with split times, best lap, average lap time etc… thus providing a training tool that I foresee many riders would take seriously. By providing this capability to the Adventure / Dirt Bike / Moto-Cross rider, Strava can easily establish itself as the affordable, premier GPS athletic activity tracking option for motorcycle enthusiasts.

  • Can you maybe explain why you are being so deliberate in NOT adding this feature? Clearly there is the demand for it, the technology exists, and more obscure sports make the cut! Is it a liability issue?

  • Pretty sure that liability has nothing to do with the reluctance and that it has everything to do with a philosophical opposition to motorized sports. If you look at their list of activities the only thing remotely close is "e-bike ride", and they were forced to do that to avoid having e-bikes polluting the KOM rankings for regular bike rides. Everything else is "human powered." I doubt we'll ever see it. I just file my moto and sled rides under e-bike.

  • Someone has to be opposed to it in their organization. Cracks me up though... E-bike = cycle with a motor. lol.

  • This is a great idea! I have thought about using my Garmin/Strava combo in flat track races but didn't want to throw off my training stats. Please add this functionality as there is a HUGE user group that could take advantage of it, and many of the users will cross over in multiple disciplines.

  • There is a new market waiting to happen in motocross and motorsport as a whole. By riding a circuit and recording lap times you could create a championship in the cloud. For someone like me who doesn't have time to enter a race and all the preparation that goes with it. I could just arrive at a track on any given day, do a couple of laps and be ranked in a championship. If anything people would be inspired to ride more competitively.

  • This is a great idea! I have been tracking my rides privately but would appreciate an option for full functionality.

  • How many obscure categories have been added to Strava since this request was made? Velobike? Wheelchair? Virtual rides and runs? Stair Stepper? It can't be that hard to add a field to the DB and let users select "motorsport". Who knows, you might even make some money doing it. lol.

  • Used my edge to log a Moto ride a few weeks back and got flagged for pinching KOM's so I deleted the ride. Now I've unlinked strava from my Garmin account and will be using strava less because I need to manually upload my cycling activities.
