Offer splits other than one mile (running)

As of now, splits are only listed in single mile sections. Half mile, quarter mile, or even eighth mile splits would be extremely useful. Say i was doing a 8x400m interval workout, alternating fast and slow 400m segements. A quarter mile split would allow you to see your average pace for just that fast segement, while the current whole mile splits only serve to average out two slow sections and two fast sections, making the avgerage pace failry meaningless. With quarter (or eighth) mile splits, you could see if your sprint speed changed over the course of a workout, or if slowing overall pace was due to pulling back more during recovery segmentss

  • i suggested that we could rename the laps in a workout.  so Lap1 would be warm up.  Lap 2 is Repetition (fast bit).  Lap 3 is recovery.  if you look at the laps afterwards it tells you the distance/average pace/time.

remember a Lap is not a split.  Laps you can make yourself by pushing a button on your watch during the workout.

  • I, too, would like to see splits at intervals other than half a mile and a mile during a run or ride. During a run, in my opinion, it would be a lot more beneficial to listen to your distance at a tenth of a mile, a quarter mile, and up to what is already established. I know that the mapmyrun application supports these types of notification parameters. I used mapmyrun but preferred the challenges Strava offered. However, knowing my pace at shorter distances is more important to me.

Also, getting a notification every mile during a bike ride becomes increasingly annoying the farther you ride. Perhaps increasing the distance at which notifications are sent to the biker would be a lot more beneficial.

  • Hi Niko and Daniel,

Thanks for these suggestions! I think that offering my customizability to splits is a great idea. Let's vote up this suggestion!

  • I, too, think splits should be offered at distances other than half a mile and one mile. I know that mapmyrun offers the shorter distances of a tenth of a mile and a quarter mile. This would be a lot more beneficial when it comes to getting feedback regarding the runners pace and time. Also, making it to where this feedback is offered at longer distances when a biker is riding would definitely make getting these notifications a lot less annoying.

  • Totally agree on my desire for other split notifications other than mile and half mile. Quarter mile notifications would be a huge improvement.

  • Agreed with all of the above. From what it seems like, if the data is sent through - for example - Garmin, even if you hit "lap" for every split (like if you're doing an 800 meter repeat workout), Strava for some reason goes through the trouble of reassembling the data back into even miles. I don't understand why this extra step would even exist, though I'm sure there's some kind of explanation. Maybe it's related to the absurd cost of Garmin's API, but I think this isn't a Garmin device specific issue.

  • Any update on this? This 1 mi auto split feature makes Strava pretty useless.

  • I'd LOVE to have .25mi updates as well. It helps me stay focused mentally. I'd also love to see the hundredths place (2 past the decimal) instead of just the 10ths place. And, I would really like to have a pre-determined distance. Yes, these are all available on Nike+, where I've migrated from.

  • I recorded my splits by lap button for interval runs.  But Strava shows only split by mile.  It would be great to show as manually set.

  • Yes, please make strava import the lap splits created by pressing the lap button on a Garmin. That should not be a strava premium feature ...

  • Hit lap on your watch for whatever splits you want to see. Then you can view those splits under the "laps" section of strava.

  • Christina, How does that help when you want the audio cue at 1/4 mile off the track??

  • Thanks for Christina pointing it out.  The Lap section on Strava.com shows the manual splits data.  I do not think Strava app can show the manual splits.
