Privacy setting to make Activities only visible Followers

I'd like to be able to designate specific strava users as "trusted" so that they can see my private activities. I don't really care if my friends and family can see my runs past my house, but some people follow me on Strava who I do not know at all.

  • Needs to happen ASAP. Utterly ridiculous that this isn't an option. It's also not clear to users that their rides aren't private, particularly when they've enabled "enhanced privacy". My friends with this option ticked were surprised to hear that anyone can still access their full ride maps.

    Strava privacy settings need an urgent overhaul. As it stands, I've set all my rides to private, so now none of my approved followers are able to see anything. It eliminates the entire social aspect of Strava, but better that than randoms see exactly what time I leave home and return. What a boon for burglars - the ability to see daily routines and habits of anyone using the app!!! I wouldn't even be surprised if an insurance claim was denied if you're actively broadcasting the times your house is unoccupied to THE ENTIRE WORLD.

  • I agree.  I want to be able to share activities ONLY with those who follow me (or I follow).  How can I set this up?

  • I have also tried to set this up so only my husband and I can share stats but the only way we seem to be able to do this is to have no privacy settings on.  Is this correct?  We have spent a bit of time trying to find out how to set this up without success.

  • Incredible. This issue is 4 years old and is STILL UNADDRESSED!

    What the heck, Strava? What's so difficult about privacy granularity???

    * Allow users to set the default for activities as:

    1. completely private;
    2. share/show to followers or groups that the user _*explicitly*_ defines;
    3. public.

    * On a per activity basis, allow a user to make a particular activity "Friends Only".

  • I've just read this:

    https://www.tetongravity.com/story/gear-tech/strava-speeds-help-mountain-bikers-get-banned-from-california-park

    Extremely bad. This feature, which would probably take a week to implement for someone with a sense of velocity, is so basic yet so important. I suspect Strava doesn't want to reduce the network effect - which is a valid concern.

    However, due to these developments, I'm just going to make most/all of my activities private. If everyone that has a concern did that, the network effect for NOT implementing this feature would be worse, than for implementing it. Maybe that will convince the folks at Strava to prioritize.

    I love the app - it has so much functionality even in the free version - but I feel this feature should've been there year 1.

  • Agreed Celine. I keep 99% of my stuff private. If there was privacy granularity, then I'd open more up to my friends. And I'd also allow more people to be my friends. Until then, it's staying locked, which is no doubt not what Strava would like. There is so much usefulness in Strava data, but it's being kneecapped by the poor privacy. The official statement is that privacy is a top priority for 2018. I have a very difficult believing any Strava policy--official, or via non-implementation.

  • It's May 22, 2018... I have not received any communication from Strava regarding GDPR.

  • I couldn't agree more with this request.  I was honestly shocked that activities could not be set up to be visible only to followers.  That seems pretty ridiculous.  Please, please add this feature!

  • Regarding Matthew’s official comment: that just doesn’t link to the activity from anywhere, correct? But if I typed that activity ID directly into my browser, it would still show up for anyone, wouldn’t it?

  • Matthew, that's not good enough!

    We want more granularity: ability set per follower access on a per activity basis. IOW, decide which followers see which activities.

  • Their "solution" seems to be:

    • Enable Enhanced Privacy

    • Enable the setting for Hide from Segment and Challenge Leaderboards*

    Which at one level I *kind of* understand.  If you don;t want the public to see your details, then you should hide it from the public, including the leaderboards.

    But let's be real...it would not be hard to hide the ACTIVITY from view and still allow you to participate in leaderboards.  If someone wants to hunt down my segments and piece them together to figure out the activity, fine.  They'll only see me on defined segments.

    Come on Strava.  Lots of folks want this.

  • Moreover, Premium members get a friends-only leaderboard. I'd still like that to work in this case.

  • This really ought to be happening.
    Dear Strava reps,
    Is there a policy reason for not implementing it? If it's a technical reason please let us know. Maybe I am missing something obvious about the system and how it necessarily needs to function.
    Couldn't someone respond either way rather than keeping users in the dark? That's only polite given the length of time that users have been asking about the feature.

  • Strava have updated the privacy settings so now you can set that only followers can view your activities

    the downside (if that matters to you) is that you aren't on leaderboards - personally not a big deal but I would like Strava to update the system so that you appear on the leaderboard for your followers but not the public ones
