Better Year-to-Date Mileage Totals and Stats in Training Calendar

We've seen a number of separate feature suggestion forums focused around Athlete stats for the current year and previous years, as well as better reporting of these metrics via the Training Calendar and other features, for example:

  • "How do I see my mileage total for last year?"
  • "I'd like to be able to compare my total kms, elevation and time on a graph compared to my previous years on Strava."
  • "I would like to be able to compare each year's stats."
  • "I'd love to see how much climbing I've done per month and year in total."
  • "I want to know how many miles I ran each month, year, etc., and how many miles I cycled, swam, etc.. On the Training Calendar now I only get total miles for ALL activities."
  • "Would love total miles + elevation broken down for runs & rides. Right now the Training Calendar shows combined activities."

Background:

For the current year, your Strava Profile page will display your Year-to-Date stats for your preferred activity type (either cycling or running as set in your Profile Settings). On the Training Log, you can see weekly mileage, time, and elevation totals going back through your history. On the Training Calendar, you can access yearly and monthly mileage and time metrics for all your activities combined, but there is no elevation statistic.

Add your Feedback!

This feature suggestion forum pulls together the main themes from many separate but related forums we've seen. Please use this forum to add your feedback, input and ideas around what is most important to you in terms of year-to-date reporting.

The leading feedback trends so far are to separate yearly metrics in the Training Calendar by activity type (running and cycling), and to add yearly elevation totals.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

March 26th, 2015:

We've just released a very small, but potentially helpful tool on your Profile pages. In the "My Stats" section, you can now select any year under "2015". Selecting another year will display your cumulative distance, time, elevation gain and number of rides for that year.

  • On the our Strava club we have launched a challenge: the winner will be who ride the highest number of kms in 2015.

    Thanks.

  • I'd love to see my all time elevation gain displayed, as well as time and distance. I know it's available because if I log on to Strava and then do nothing, leaving my PC/iPad alone, I get timed out and the screen changes to another one which displays this information asking if I'd like to "follow" myself. I've tried to find a page I can get to which displays it, but so far the only solution I've found is to get timed out.

  • How about one report generation tool that spits out mileage, time, and elevation? The user selects the date ranges and activity type(s).

Why because, even if involving a bit of manual work, I could breakdown the data all the ways I'd like. I could quickly see my yearly totals for 2014. I could take a look at my equivalent year-to-date from 2014. I could look and see what I did over the coming month-long period in 2013. You've got the data... let the users wrangle it!

Do you think this satisfies the majority of the feedback on this thread? What in particular, would you still like to see in terms of yearly reporting?

  • I like the new add-on, but would still like to know how much I commuted for the year.  Why have a "commute" button if we cannot see the results?

  • I think for the profile page, a yearly breakdown like that is fine - however, I would still love to analyse a custom date range, maybe under the training log?

  • Thanks for the update Elle. For me I don't feel like the change meets the needs of what this ticket was about, as it doesn't break it down my month. Plus, I think being able to do some deeper statistical analysis would be nice.

  • Agreed. The addition is nice but doesn't quite go far enough. It does show the total elevation gain for a given year. But it doesn't offer the ability to compare date ranges; for example current YTD stats vs the same period of the previous year. Good start!

  • I'll echo some of the other comments from the past day. This is a great start. Still looking forward to custom date ranges and custom date range comparison options.

Just yesterday I wished I'd been able to compare at year-to-date totals from this year and 2013.

  • I have a custom app that integrates with Strava's data to display graphs and charts that are more detailed than the Strava site itself provides. It's far from pretty, but it gives some handy graphs IMO. If you are interested, you can email me at: "bd" followed by my last name at gmail.com. It's free to use, just don't want it overloaded.

  • I'm very happy with the new feature, because it helps me to compare with others, as I suggested. :-) :-) :-)

For the missing  Year- to-Date feature you could maybe do the following dropdown list in the my-stats-page.

    2015 YTD

    2014

    2014 YTD

    2013

    2013 YTD

    ...

2014 YTD would mean, kilometers in 2014 in the range 01.01.2014 - 31.03.2014  ... when watching today,  (...when watching tomorrow then until 01.04.2014)

What I still miss is a summary of my cycling, walking and running kilometers, elevation gain and time together - maybe also compared with others, maybe with a "total" -button on the my-stats page.

Please have a look on the total button in this image above:

    Or, or And: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5lefsdp6qg4op12/Bild1%20%282%29.png?dl=0

It would be great to have an elevation gain summary in the calender view. There it would be the total value of elevation gain  (=cycling+ walking+running) anyway, so also fine.

Again: I'm very gratefull, that you seized my ideas and implemented it in this very nice way :-) Thank you very much!

  • Another plus 1 for separating the calendar by activity type.

At the moment it combines km run and cycled, which when you think about it renders the stat useless, as a km run is not the same metric as a km cycled!

Combining hours makes a bit more sense, but distance is just dumb!

  • The availability of the data seems pretty haphazard right now -- I can get weekly stats, per activity, on the Training Log page.  I can get monthly and yearly stats, NOT broken down by activity, on the Training Calendar.  And in a completely different section of the website (My Profile), I can get some yearly stats (NOT monthly or weekly) per activity.

How about put it all in one place:  yearly, monthly, weekly stats (and ability to choose my own date range), and ability to separate by activity type?  And include all the stats anyone would want (elevation gain, for instance).

  • I would love to be able to create a report with a range of Dates that I pick.  Also, the elevation in the Calendar would be nice

  • I'd love to be able to see monthly totals (table or graph) where I can toggle the following:

    - activity type (running, cycling, swimming, all)

    - distance or time

Also with weekly totals, though we can see it now in training log, you can't really visually see the trend over time (in graph form). You can see a weekly total graph on your profile page, but can't break that down by activity type.

I would think that anywhere totals are presented, you should have the option to filter by activity type.

  • I'd love to be able to see how I am doing this YTD as compared to last YTD.  In other words, compare Jan 1 thru May 30 for 2014 and 2015 (or any set of years for that matter).  Might be nice to see all years for a given date range.  For example, show me how I did for the month of May for the past 5 years.

  • +1 on breaking out calendar totals by activity type. I'm primarily a runner, and only really interested in monthly running mileage. If I throw in a few bike rides, it's no longer useful.

  • What Jeffrey Redfern said. As a runner, today I logged bike ride number one and the calendar view instantly became useless without an option to sort by activity.

  • Please fix this.  I have one bike ride all year, and I am primarily a runner.  The bike ride made the yearly totals completely useless!

  • I would like to see yearly metrics separated in the Training Calendar as well as the "activities" section on my profile by activity type. I had to create a separate account for my cycling in order to circumvent this, which is quite an inconvenience. Thanks!

  • I have a table in my paper diary, listing monthly the number of miles I've cycled and the number of miles I've run. I would dearly love to get monthly totals for each sport out of Strava! I have to go through my log and add it up manually, which is bonkers when you have a database that just needs a feature added to spit out the numbers. I also log hikes in Strava, always as the 'hike' activity type, so would love monthly totals for this too, but cycling and running are the main ones.

  • Curious if there's an update on separating activity types on the Training Calendar? It seems like it would be a really simple and easy fix to add some queries that just do run vs ride vs all.

  • Any updates on fixing this?  Please up the priority of this.  The user experience of combined run/bike mileage makes absolutely no sense.  It would be a very easy thing to create an option to view monthly totals with an option for cycling or running.  Lots of people clearly want this.  Why does nobody from Strava respond?  I'm a premium member and it would sure be nice to have a response that this is being worked on.

  • So bummed to find this thread because that means this doesn't exist.  I too need to separate out my monthly training calendar by activity.  Ughh, I'm going to have to do this by hand?  Blech.

  • Come on Strava. Let us separate rides and runs in the calendar please!

  • For me the only feature you need to add to Strava to make it perfect would be to allow us to filter the calendar by activity type in the same way you can on the Training Log. I'd like to be able to see, per month and for the year, what total distance I've done (as you have now) and also be able to see individual activity distances (run, swim, bike).

    Thanks
