Virtual Challenges

Find a trainer/video/virtual training software company to sponsor "virtual" challenges. I'm sure they would be popular with a certain segment of the community. I suspect this is already "in the works," I hope.

    Hello everyone,

We are exploring the option to include both indoor and virtual activities for select Strava Challenges this winter. Do you have a preference between challenges that only include indoor data, challenges that include both indoor and outdoor data together, or a challenge leaderboard filter to filter between indoor vs. outdoor results?

  • Why not simply duplicate the existing Strava Challenges as virtual challenges ex. vMTS, vGran Fondo, vClimbing... It would also be nice if there was a sort feature on the vChallenges so people could sort between "classic" and "smart" trainers.

  • Yep very much agree, basically any of the climbing challenges and distance challenges should take into account virtual rides. Not everyone can ride outdoors for many many reasons. Some for actual physical reasons and Strava is ignoring that market place, great dis-service to many of our veterans, many who now are disabled.  Some think that virtual rides are not as hard as outside I say they are wrong and as long as someone is using a power meter that should be fine. There will be and are always those that cheat the system that is easy to do so lets get on with the 21st century and allow virtual rides to count for challenges. Not segments just the distance and climbing ones :)

  • I think having virtual challenges is valid and motivating. Bit of a missed opportunity at the moment by Strava here, hope it will change moving forward. Got my vote!

  • Excellent idea, it would be wonderful to see this happen. I don't really participate in the Strava challenges during the winter because a large percentage of my I riding is inside on a smart trainer (now integrated with Zwift). This feature would continue to foster the connection between Zwift and strava, which I see as my "hub" of athletic activity, inside and out.

  • Very good Point! That's what I'm waiting for since enjoying my Zwift rides in the winter!

  • A) I only have a road bike and live in the Midwest where snow and bitter cold prevent me from getting outside.
    B) My drive train can't tell if I'm on the road or trainer
    C) My legs complain just as much on the trainer as on the road
    D) what harm would it do
    E) the miles are already recorded on Strava so had would it be

  • Riding is riding Strava you need to count our virtual rides. My legs don't think it's virtual ;-)
    Gets my vote.

  • Yes Please- Strava give us this option to have Virtual challenges so people who have long winters, on trainer, can also have challenges they try to achieve.

  • I like the idea of duplicating the existing challenges as virtual challenges. Makes perfect sense.

  • Really like the idea of vChallenges. I see the sense in keeping them separate from outdoor rides.

  • I think that's a great idea (suggested above by DJ Wright). Just duplicate all the challenges and put a 'v' in the name - also would love for the Zwift training and challenges to count towards them as I can't always get outdoors to ride at this time of year.

  • I share the popular view here that it's unfortunate to see virtual km excluded from challenges. This deters me from joining winter MTS and other distance challenges because I can't respect the achievement reported by Strava. But I am not attracted to the idea of a parallel set of v-challenges. The problem for Strava, I guess, with v-km is that they are not all equal and can't be trusted for comparison. Who trusts a Zwift green jersey on vPower? My view is that some achievements can be trusted, more or less, if based on a power meter on the bike or trainer and if converted to km by a trusted VR app such as Zwift. These contributions could count as real km and could - should - be part of mainstream MTS. Any other km are a bit meaningless and will lead to friction between riders even in a virtual competition. If Strava would also block the "correcting" of elevation data on virtual rides (Watopia does not respect the topology of its notional island) then even virtual vertical metres could be allowed in climbing challenges.

  • Great idea, the challenges are great for riding outdoors but what about the winter months?  Esp. with the Zwift tie-in already in place.

  • This is a good idea and hope strava take it up. I also wish Strava logged virtual miles and elevation separately from real world outside miles!! V-miles for the year and miles for the year being 2 different things!!
