Virtual Challenges

Find a trainer/video/virtual training software company to sponsor "virtual" challenges. I'm sure they would be popular with a certain segment of the community. I suspect this is already "in the works," I hope.

  • Gr8 idea, lets have our Zwift efforts included in Strava challenges onecway or another. Separate virtual challemges are a good option.

  • I also don't join the MTS as my Zwift miles aren't included which I agree with everybody else that they should be. A mile is a mile whether on a trainer or outside...

  • I too agree with having virtual  challenges. Real life rides are what its all about for me, but that said Zwift is now a very important  component of my training and i want it to count in its own  context. Please!

  • Having completed every challenge to date this year (till end of May), I now find myself at the start of winter here in cold & often icy Tasmania.  Having just started on Zwift at the start of May, I don't see much chance of venturing out into the cold to log the necessary challenge KMs over the next few months.  Most disappointing as it puts an end to my quest to complete all the year's challenges.  A virtual alternative would provide the perfect solution.  It is very surprising that Strava are not all over this already.

  • +1 strava, why is it taking you so long to develop virtual challenges?? they're a great motivator for outdoor rides, it's about time the huge indoor community, zwift and elsewhere, got that same support too. please :)

  • Strava needs to move with the times. Turbo training is no longer the preserve of those mad people who stare at a wall but is becoming an alternative method of riding when conditions don't permit normal souls to venture out without risk of injury or death. Virtual challenges are the way forward to compliment real-world riding.

  • I no longer participate in challenges as most of my winter rides are done on zwift, please sort something out so I can participate in challenges.

  • Virtual trainer could start with Zwift and have challenges even just based on Zwift . The product is integrated now into Strava, so why not have challenges . The outdoor challenges are really fun and good if your riding anyway except in winter which is northern and southern hemisphere opposites , which gives the winter riders a challenge. I know as a premium rider that maybe with products like Zwift it would be great to be inspired to ride and remain fit - Lets go Strava get those virtual challenges up and going and stop delaying.

If Strava doesn't someone else will fill the gap and create the market opportunity.

  • I agree, but instead of supporting separate virtual challenges, why not create a duplicate set of challenges for "combo" riding...

That way, those who use both Zwift and IRL rides to keep up their fitness can have the same motivation as those who have the benefit (luxury ?!?) of not being plagued by IRL issues like traffic, weather or a work schedule (I avoid riding in bad traffic, bad weather, or after dark for personal safety reasons) Why should that relegate my premium membership to second class citizen on challenges?

If they want to keep the "bloodlines" pure, by all means maintain challenges that are IRL only.

I suspect after a very short amount of time, that will be the minority, while most of us use technology to improve our cycling and our lives.

  • I see why they should be different but can't see why they can't have separate virtual rides from Zwift, completed 116km last night to find it doesn't count which was just irritating, i can't get out much so most of my rides are virtual and would be nice to take part in a challenge.

  • Hey, Strava. I was going to sign up for your Gran Fondo challenge for January. Was really looking forward to it. Operative word here is "WAS". So...it turns out that trainer miles don't count towards that challenge. Seriously?!?! So I guess those of us who live in a cold weather winter climate - like Minnesota - are just out of luck when it comes to cycling challenges I guess. Thanks, Strava. Frankly, that's pretty crappy and pretty short sighted on your part. Why don't you do the same thing for running challenges....treadmill miles need not apply. Sometimes, Strava, you can do some cool stuff...sometimes you can really suck.

  • @Anthony yep we all agree no reason they can not especially for verified riders it's trivial to get verified now a days... Verrrryyy disappointed in Strava's stance.  Many Many ways to deal with the issue, also there are many disabled folks who can ride trainers but would not be able to ride outside....

  • My NY resolution was to do 12 Gran Fondo's in 2017 and ive already failed in January as a very hard 4hr (102km) ride on the Tacx Tour of Flanders simulation didnt count ! Please include virtual rides in the challenges...

  • I'd put my vote in for this too.  Especially when using a smart trainer with power meter, or separate power meter along with Zwift, or another trusted application.  It is just as easy to cheat on the road...group vs solo rides are not tagged either and count for KOMs, so why flag virtual rides and have them not count towards challenges?

  • I agree... there are all sorts of things to complicate even the current arrangements.. people in groups/draughting, electric bikes, quad bikes etc taking KOMs so smart trainer rides should b allowed

  • Another vote here for virtual Zwift challenges.  My legs will tell you that my online workouts are typically harder than my outdoor workouts (I live in Florida where it is FLAT!).  Please add this feature.

  • I also hope these virtual challenges can be added soon. It should be no problem for Strava to offer this. Now with the increasing popularity of indoor cycling, e.g. Zwift, it will be used by many people.

Did anyone from Strava HQ replied to this request already?

    Ride on!

  • Just duplicate the ones you already have for outdoor challenges...keep it simple. You just would have two challenges for each: virtual and outdoor/real.

Besides, I have the feeling if you combined virtual rides and real rides and provided a filter between virtual and real, you would still have a whole ton of people complaining about how riding on a trainer isn't really riding and those who use trainers are somehow less of an athlete than those who ONLY ride outside, so why combine the results.

Probably a good idea to avoid that whole pissing match altogether...

I mean, if you can send Zwift rides to Strava, then why not include virtual rides in some new virtual challenges?

  • I would think that for any distance ride that both trainer and IRL rides could be included. A filter would be a nice touch when viewing the leaderboard. Separate challenges would also work.

  • For me, have dedicate virtual challenges - don’t mix and match real data and indoor data. Things like virtual climbing challenges or virtual distance challenges would be good!

  • Eric,
I prefer challenges that combine indoor and outdoor riding.
My riding is opportunistic based on weather and time of day. In addition I have a mostly dedicated trainer set up. So all year round I have a combo of indoor and outdoor riding

    Thank you for following up
