What does the "commute" button actually do?

What does the "commute" button actually do?  I bike commute a lot and I try to always click this button assuming that I could filter my activity logs for commutes.  Well I've actually tried that and don't see that it is an option.  So what does clicking that button do?

  • Since my commute is 30 miles and involves many segments, I would not want it excluded from activity 'spam'. However I would like to be able to filter on activities for the year and see how many of my miles were weekend fun rides and how many were gas saving commutes.

  • I track my commuter miles on a spreadsheet and include the miles NOT driven in my car.  Using a formula I calculate my CO2 reduction, based on fueleconomy.com engine data for my vehicle.  That could be a cool added feature, aside from simply filtering commute miles vs. say, training or recreational miles.  (600 lbs CO2 reduced/saved so far this year)

  • Odd thing with the "commute" tagging....

Since I have started tagging my work rides with 'commute"  I regularly get  "kudo's from "random strava users" that I do not know ... I am not following them ... they are not following me...etc

I think the 'commute" tagging is broadcasting my work commuting rides to the general strava community somewhere without my knowledge ??

otherwise...why are these random strava users giving me kudo's for such a basic ride as 'commute" ??

  • Brett, are you a member of any Strava clubs?  I'm on a couple of local groups as well as a couple of global groups, and any of my rides that is not set to Private will show up in all of those groups under Recent Activity.  I regularly get Kudos for any ride not set to Private (commute or not) from people not following me, but those are people who are in the same clubs I am in.

  • Why would anyone want to look at a feed full of commutes? Honestly can't think of a single reason. If users could tag rides as commutes, you could choose not to view commutes in your feed.

You have to educate users to tag appropriately though. Possible, and well worth it.

Also, you can currently tag on desktop, but not app [Android at least]. I would imagine most people commute with the app over a Garmin, so makes sense to make tagging available in the app. It means the convenience of logging your ride on your phone is moot as you then need to login on desktop to tag it.

Considering how far Strava has come, I would have thought this was a fairly basic suggestion?

  • ummm sometimes I want to see just my commutes, as that accounts for 2/3 of my total cycling, and I like to compare times from different days and look for trends.

This morning I was trying to look at only my morning commutes, so I typed "Morning Commute" into the search box, and for some reason it did not display all my activities with "morning commute" in the title.  Makes the Search function rather useless, I think.

  • Hi Elle,

Too bad it's a relic. I think the commute tag has a lot of significance. One I'd love to know my total commute miles for personal reasons. Two, a local cycling club I belong to has a competition to see who commutes the most each month, along with how many trips. And there is also bike month. Commuting by bike is becoming more and more widespread, and people are using Strava to see how much of this they do. It would be great to have it separate from the recreational rides.

    Thank you,

    Nancy

  • I would love to see the 'commute' tag put to good use! I personally don't really care if commutes come up in my feed or if my commute comes up in other people's feeds... I know the real rides happen on the weekends and it is motivating to see my friends commute/train during the week.  Also, as someone else mentioned, sometimes commutes are changed to add miles/climbing, so it is cool to see that in the feed.

As others have already said, I'd love to track commute miles by week/month/year for comparison to past periods.  And inversely, I'd love to track my non-commute miles in the same way as they are different efforts/intensities.  Similarly, I'd love to more easily track miles/hours/elevation by week/month/year: Road, Mountain, CX and Commute.  They are all separate forms of  riding.  Plus, I think with Strava aggregating commute data and selling to local governments, they'd get better data when people tag it commute.

And please, please, please add the commute tag to the Strava app! I use the iphone app.

  • It has been one year. Nothing has been done, yet the commute checkbox remains a useless option. It is not difficult to toggle this function to be included/excluded from feeds, and to be a sorting flag for personal statistics. I do not understand why Strava can't put this to bed. The typical Strava user is not just a KOM hunter - we want to sort our rides for commutes as well.

  • Can we please get the ability to filter our activities by those with the the commute tag?

  • This seems like a fairly easy feature to implement.  Can the folks at Strava explain why they would NOT add functionality to the commute button?

  • Love the discussion here about how to use the commute tag and develop new features. There is currently a good mix of specific feature suggestions in the 'Suggest a Feature' section of our forums:

    https://strava.zendesk.com/forums/20154338-Suggest-a-new-Feature/entries/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query=commute&for_search=1&commit=Search

Since this post is focused on discussion, is anyone interested in adding more feature suggestion forums to the mix? For example, the ability to filter my Activities by the commute tag, better metrics to track commute data on the profile, etc.

Please continue adding your votes and commenting here as well as with the various feature suggestion forums. Thanks!

  • Elle, I think the frustration is that this topic is over a year old. What is being asked is relatively simple - allow commutes to be either included/excluded in a feed and to be able to filter activities based on the Commute flag. I don't understand why Strava is not doing more.

  • @Robert, thanks for your comment and I understand your frustration. Prioritizing all the amazing projects we'd like to work on is tough, and sometimes we have to focus our efforts and resources which means making tough decisions. Our work around Strava Metro and commuting data are important to us, and so is the feedback here. I hope we can find time to prioritize development with commuting features coming up.

I'm sure you've found this thread, but it relates specifically to filtering the Activity Feed: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21067962-Options-to-filter-and-sort-the-Dashboard-Feed-on-Strava

  • I would like an option where there is ride recreational and ride transport that I can chose when I start my ride.  I would also like to be able set ride transport with the commute tag on as my default.  This is especially important to the National Bike Challenge.

I have replaced over 80% of my car trips with a bike trip.  I would like to keep track on these as transport rides for the National Bike Challenge.  Currently I have to go into Strava online for each ride and manually put hit the COMMUTE tag.  Unfortunately this doesn't work well not only because it takes time but also because sometimes the miles synch automatically before I can get on my computer and put on the COMMUTE tag.  Once the miles synch they can not be updated in the National Bike Challenge.  Even if the tag is updated later and synched again they do not change from recreation to transport miles.

It has also been noted by others that if Strava would like to sell their/our data to groups like municipalities having the transport and recreational data sets would be very valuable.  Using the COMMUTE tag currently is VERY DIFFICULT.  You have to go online on your computer and enter the commute tag for each individual segment.  The difficulty makes the data inaccurate.  Because using Strava is to synch is easy, the problems of it being very difficult to tag COMMUTE in Strava is messing up my National Bike Challenge data.

  • Regarding leveraging the commute tag, it is now being used by the National Bike Challenge (http://nationalbikechallenge.org) for data synchronised from Strava to differentiate between transport and recreational rides. So even if Strava don't do anything specific with the tag themselves, simply having the tagging system in place (and making it easy to use, or automatic) allows 3rd party developers to do more interesting things with the data.

  • Hi Elle,

I have 955 commutes over the past 3 years - but I don't get round to tagging all of them and certainly am not planning to do it manually!

I'd love a feature to filter rides Mon-Fri 6-8am, 5-7pm and tag them all as commutes, so I can filter by ride type. Cheers

  • @Tom Quinn Or as someone else suggested, if you start and finish within tagged 'work' and 'home' areas on a map, automatically tag it as a commute

  • Maybe Strava could partner with some other entity to promote bike-to-work days / week / month? The commute tag could assist in the mileage tally for some sort of incentive, along the lines of what Competitive Cyclist recently did.

  • How's this for an idea for the commute flag: An option to add extra weight automatically when commute is selected. When I rise to work, I carry an extra 4kg of gear in a pannier over when I ride the same bike recreationally. This noticeably skews the estimated power figures. There is no way I'm going to faff around with the gear features every time I switch between recreational and commute!

Also, setting certain bikes as default to commute would be good, as many people have a dedicated commuter bike.

I too think that having home and work zones that automatically tag as commute would be useful.

The most important addition, however, and also surely the easiest to implement would be to just add a commute tick box on the mobile apps.

  • Though it doesn't address the question posed to this discussion, the ability to tag as commute from the Strava mobile app is coming soon. I thought the news may be relevant to this topic! Thanks.

  • Awesome.

You'll see a great increase in Strava activity once you add this feature.

  • I think that feature/old flag should be more widely used as a filter.

Not like just in the other feature request in the feed, For me it is enough to mark them as private... but of course others will still flood you with commute rides and you cant do nothing about it.

But also in profile statistics for example ... splitting ridden km into commute and non commute and so on.

Right now that commute flag is rather a option for each user itself. But it could be interesting if you compare yourself to others to see how much of their ridden km are actually commute rides and which are training/races/touring kilometers.

    • How often do you use Strava to record your commutes (#/week)?
    • What are some reasons you would NOT upload your commute data to Strava?
    • What would encourage you to track more commutes on Strava?
    • What info would you like to see about your Commutes on Strava?
    • How would you like commutes to be shown in the Feed?

    • How often do you use Strava to record your commutes (#/week)?   10x+ a week
    • What are some reasons you would NOT upload your commute data to Strava?  Other people are less likely to follow you, or will unfollow you, as they don't find your commutes to be particularly interesting rides.  In other words, it "pollutes" your stream in their eyes.
    • What would encourage you to track more commutes on Strava?  I already track them as I like them factored into the fitness/freshness feature (they are rides after all).
    • What info would you like to see about your Commutes on Strava? None that isn't already present, but another poster's idea of auto-tagging something as a commute based on a fixed start/end place is a fantastic idea.
    • How would you like commutes to be shown in the Feed?  I would like to see my own commutes, but not see rides others have marked as a commute by default.  But i'd be OK with a global "show commutes" checkbox where the default was false.  Another option would be to group commutes into one entry per-day.

  • Same info as I posted in another thread about commutes.

Help us by sending your feedback around these questions:

    • How often do you use Strava to record your commutes (#/week)?  up to 10 times per week
    • What are some reasons you would NOT upload your commute data to Strava?  privacy, but I have privacy zones setup around home and work.
    • What would encourage you to track more commutes on Strava?  tools that analyze commuting activities.  awards for milestones.
    • What info would you like to see about your Commutes on Strava? Miles/yr, avg distance, avg time, calories burned, CO2 saved, etc.
    • How would you like commutes to be shown in the Feed? showing up on my feed is fine, but I would like the ability to filter out commutes of my own or of others.  By default, I think my commutes should be hidden from my followers unless they elect to see them in their own feeds.

  • - How often do you use Strava to record your commutes (#/week)?
    4 on average (2 days).

    - What are some reasons you would NOT upload your commute data to Strava?
Privacy zones aren't sufficiently configurable (they snap to postcodes and you can't control the radius.) This means that I have the choice of revealing where I work or not participating on segments close to my work which it's fun to compare with colleagues.

    - What would encourage you to track more commutes on Strava?
Better features to automatically recognise commutes and the option to add a preset weight for my pannier for better power and calorie figures.

    - What info would you like to see about your Commutes on Strava?
What Ed Warner said, but it's important that there is a way to include the extra weight I carry when commuting in calculating these.

-How would you like commutes to be shown in the Feed?
I want to see other people's commutes unless I opt out, especially as I want to see colleagues. Perhaps a useful an option could be to hide commutes with no PBs/top 10 achievements?

  • Help us by sending your feedback around these questions:

    • How often do you use Strava to record your commutes (#/week)?
10 times / week, depending on the weather.
    • What are some reasons you would NOT upload your commute data to Strava?
Well I have no reasons to not upload my commutes, cuz I need to track distance on my bikes for service points etc.. Furthermore I mark them as private. They still count for all the challenges etc. I do them private, cuz most of the time I do not ride at the limit and get no PR's or KOM's any way. For me that works good, also private zones are okay as they are for me.
    • What would encourage you to track more commutes on Strava?
I track all my rides on strava. More isn't possible.
    • What info would you like to see about your Commutes on Strava?
I would like to have a clear separation between commute and all other rides (training / tours / races) in general statistics of profiles of strava users (so you can better compare yourself among others).
And for some reason the filter in training logs for commute and non-commute rides is buggy and do NOT work properly. (should be some extra bug eport i suppose?)
    • How would you like commutes to be shown in the Feed?
They should be generally not be shown, but an option to check out commutes would be nice. Might be similar to the training log solution. Could be as well an option in settings. That you can set up your default preference with or without commute rides.

    Regards.
