Feedback for Annual Achievement Awards

December 22nd, 2015:

As we go into the new year, where annual achievements would reset, we wanted to let you know that annual achievements have been deactivated.

We're grateful for all your feedback over the course of the year, positive and negative, and we will continue to explore and develop other ways to celebrate and incentivize Strava athletes. Thank you for understanding and have a great holiday season.

Starting in 2015, annual achievements recognize your accomplishments on running and cycling segments during the current year.

Full explanation found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

We'd love to hear your feedback on this new feature, so please leave your comments below!

January 30th, 2015 update:

To summarize what Strava has done so far to address the feedback we've received:
  • As of today, we've disabled annual PR achievements on your activities. Those activities uploaded in the past will see 2015 annual PRs removed in a few weeks once the caches have cleared.
  • A few weeks ago, trophies for 6th-10th place for the 2015 overall leaderboard were disabled.
  • We fixed how we prioritize significant achievements as highlighted in the Activity Feed, Top Results (Activity page), and Recent Achievements (Profile Page). What was happening initially after the release is that annual achievements were appearing among the 2-3 highlighted achievements in the Activity Feed and in the Top Results section of the Activity page when there were more significant overall results later on in the activity. This was simply due to faulty logic, and we changed the logic to surface the most "significant" achievements instead by prioritizing all-time achievements.

  • The Annual Achievements that remain are KOM/QOM/CR and trophies for 2nd-5th place.

We are not going to develop an opt-out feature for annual achievements. Despite the overwhelming support for such a setting, we have chosen to take other steps to address your feedback instead, allowing us to work to make this feature better. By turning off a significant number of the annual achievements we hope that the clutter will be improved, and that it will be easier to view the achievements that are most important. As you can read below, we still have a number of projects coming later this year that will also improve the situation regarding too many achievements and visibility into annual leaderboards. Please continue to share your feedback with us here.

  • This is a good idea, but I think it could be done more usefully! Of course, every run you do for the first time in 2015 results in PRs and CRs. It's meaningless noise. It might be useful around June, but by December, with 12 months' of data, you'll have a problem similar to the overall problem you're trying to solve, which is that recent progress will be hard to monitor. I get the idea of a clean slate to account for not being at peak fitness, or to measure recent progress, but a rolling average like 'PR for the last 6 months' would be much more useful / less noisy, and would work accurately throughout the year. At least, can we have an option to turn this off? Thanks!

  • Elle, regarding your question: "Do any of you on this thread have comments on how this works, or preferences on how this should work? "

My answer:  Under no circumstances should YTD awards trump or "displace" recent KOM's and top-10 cups & PR's on the profile "achievements" or top results on an activity page.  Yet that's exactly what is happening to me and several others.  I garnered two KOM's on Sunday, and a plethora of YTD's  on Tuesday.  The YTD awards now show under achievements, dismissing the KOM's.  I had to "privatize" my Tuesday ride to re-set the achievement list.

My advice is to revise the programming to give very minor weighting to the YTD's as opposed to all-around awards.

To the larger issue, I too would rather see a rolling twelve month period instead of a calendar YTD review.  Nowhere in the athletic world (or business world) does January to current date have much meaning.  Also, for the future, I wonder if you could "focus group" these proposed changes with a team of heavy duty users or a test team, rather than dumping them onto the user community first.  I used to work in I.T. and we had several test environments where changes could be analyzed by programmers and users before shifting them to the production environment.

  • Elle, please just turn annual achievements off.  This product introduction was very poorly thought out and should be pulled while a solution is developed. Leaving a bad feature in place while you are trying to fix it is just a bad idea.

  • I don't like the rolling timeframe idea, because there's a natural fitness gain in temperate climates as the season progresses so as a tool for motivating all time KOM holders to keep going after their established segments to also maintain the 'this year' KOM, it would wipe out the benefits for the first half of the season.

However, January 1 start point is completely arbitrary, it works fine for the northern hemisphere but for the southern it makes no sense at all! The people living in the southern hemisphere should get a seasonal start date that aligns better with their winter season period of lowest average fitness.

As someone who DOES see the use of this feature, I'd also like to throw my support behind the people that suggest getting rid of all of these except the year to date KOM. Anything less than the year to date KOM is of no interest to me at all. (Also personally I don't want to see any PB/2nd best/3rd best effort etc. because all those are is 'least bad failure' '2nd lead bad failure' etc. From my perspective expand on personal achievements based on the power curve and dump everything but KOMs (all time and season to date) for time-based achievements on segments.

  • Id love to be able to disable this feature entirely - I dont want to be notified about my own 2015 KOMs or those of any others (and I dont want to see them) - there's enough data flow as it is in our cycling group for PRs and real K/QOMs - I just dont want to have to parse yet another set of trophies. If Im going to try for a KOM on a segment, Im going for the all time record - the current year "KOMs" just wreak of Pony Club - everyone gets a rosette, even for turning up.

  • I am a long time Premium Member of Strava and I love your product! The new 2015 Achievement notifications, however, are a complete mess.  Please, could you remove this feature and return to overall achievements?  This feature is unbelievably frustrating.

Thank you for your consideration! :)

  • As a huge strava fan and premium member for years, I am really surprised this was even considered in your design meetings. A major mistake. But that happens sometimes in software design. It's a mistake you can easily correct by removing this feature or adding a user switch to turn it off.

  • These annual KOMs are completely meaningless, and of course diluting the real KOMs.  The beauty of the previous system was in its simplicity, now it's a useless clutter.  I cannot tell if any of the people I follow had a decent ride worth a comment - I'm not planning to waste my time analyzing hundreds of empty cups.  Please, get rid of this feature.

  • Premium member here.  These new 2015 announcements are a nuisance.  Please allow us to turn them off.  If you don't, I think I'll "turn off" my subscription.

  • I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to be able to disable this feature, it's a nuisance.

I need to be able to see my performance develop without being constrained by a certain timeline.

I'm not a KOM hunter but I am a "I'm improving my performance" maniac; with your new feature you are depriving me.

  • Can you please consider providing a way to switch off the 2015 records function so you have an option to view all time achievements? It may be of use to someone but I find it confusing and unhelpful. None of my friends on Strava like this function either I'm afraid. Thanks.

  • I like the yearly achievements idea.... I can see why roadies are up in arms about it... Nothing really changes with their segments. A roads a road after all.... In mountain biking its a different thing altogether. Trails evolve and change over time. Most get slower so once a fast time is set when the trail is new... the chance of bettering it diminishes. Yearly results keep the competition current and allow you to see what you stand in the current conditions..

Keep up the good work Strava

  • Hi Elle -  I think the 2015 achievements are great for some users, but as many have mentioned, it would be great to have an option to make them invisible.  I would really prefer not to see them.  Perhaps you could at least offer this invisibility option to premium subscribers?  Thanks! Candice

  • Agree with the other posters that would like to be able to "opt out" of the yearly KOM/PR trophies.  Too much clutter.  I love to see when I get a real PR or KOM.  Annoying when I go out for an easy cruise on my MTB and come home with a dozen trophies.

  • Please remove this new 'feature' or allow us the capability to do so ourselves. I ALWAYS use 'my results', so having all of these new trophies has added nothing but noise to a simple system that was easily navigable before Jan 1. There is quality feedback in all of these responses so I'm really not understanding why this is being forced on us. A QOM/ KOM is an achievement amongst the entire group. It does not have the same definition when applied to us personally, nor does anyone really seem to care or want it. Again, 'my results' was helpful to me in the way that Strava thinks they are making it easier (?) for us by adding all of this clutter. How do you know that Jan 1 is where i start gauging my results and progress?

  • On my ride last Saturday I got 110 trophies and most of the guys I rode with got even more, it is a joke and now makes it impossible to tell if you actually did ride well. I don't know anyone who likes the 2015 trophies. Get rid of them or at least provide the ability to disable them. Just a lot of unwanted NOISE.

  • Personally I think it's a terrible "standard" feature. If I'm right the option has always been there for filter by year. I'm unlikely to be troubling the top of many leaderboards and I use Strava purely for gauging my own times and logging progression in my results. It's a major pain when you finish a ride, see loads of PRs, then click on the segment and find it's not a true overall PR, just a PR for 2015 and you're actually slower than your best result. It's totally misleading.

  • I would like to see 2015 PR's and course records removed. If they can't be removed at least have the option to opt out of having those results appear on my activities. I only want to know how I relate to my best all time. Imagine having a CR or PR show on an activity that is much slower than your best overall times. That is almost embarrassing to me...I am sure many can relate. I am pushing to be the best version of myself..not the best slower version. My two cents...

  • i cant stress this enough.  i HATE this feature.  i need a decoder ring to see what i actually did or did not do.  its ridiculous to post a ride and see 30 trophies, 4 of were actual accomplishments and 26 were BS.  Please turn this off or give me the option to turn it off.

  • Come on Elle !!

You are skirting around the comments with your replies and not addressing what is an obvious issue of customer dissatisfaction.

I have taken the time to read the forum section where annual KOMs were requested and can see the point of an MTB trail completely changing it's route therefore a  change in leaderboard

    required.

However why impose a "feature' such as Annual KOMs when 1) we had no choice as to weather we wanted it or not and 2) It is obvious from reading the comments

from unhappy customers that we don't want it .

.......and NO,NO ,NO ..I do not want an opt out feature .

    Simply remove it.

We didn't want it in the first place so why have to opt out of something that simply should be removed.

Have an "opt in" optional feature if customers desperately want it.

A key word here is Customers. Especially those of us who are paying Premium customers.

You are not listening to us and I predict you will loose a lot of our business if you continue not too.

    Regards Kevin.

  • I don't like the 2015 KOM notifications, and don't remember voting for it. In fact I still prefer the original Strava layout! When I go for a ride I want to be informed on how I did compared to my best, not my best this week or year. While an 'opt in' or 'opt out' is the least I'd expect I'd prefer to never see it again.

  • I'd like to add my vote for an opt-out for yearly achievements.

Ideally, the opt-out would mean both that

    - no yearly achievements are recorded for my rides AND

    - I don't see yearly achievements for people I'm following

  • Could you provide an option to switch this off please?

Ideally switching it off would also hide all of my friends' fake achievements as well.

  • This new feature is a horrible idea.  Please remove!  If you want to reward people, at the end of the year move all cups and KOMs to a rider's trophy case so they remain permanent.  This is just the worst, least thought out change you've rolled out so far.  Every one I know using Strava is bemoaning this stupid idea.  It's clutter and meaningless.
