Changes to default Activity names

Starting August 18th, we changed the way Strava automatically names your activities. Previously, when uploading from a device (via the Strava website or via a syncing program) your activities would be titled "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country". Now, your activities will follow the same naming convention as the Strava App. For example, "Morning Ride", "Afternoon Run", "Evening Run".

The default activity name is easy to edit. From the mobile app, when viewing one of your activities click on the "pencil" edit icon or select edit from the menu button. From the website, see the "pencil" edit icon to the left side of your activity page. You can also edit multiple activities from the "My Activities" view under the Training tab.

We made this change in an effort to build consistency between the Strava website and mobile app. Additionally, when viewing activities listed on the profile or Activity Feed, activities are always listed by date making it easy to determine when the activity took place.

We understand that the new default activity names will not work for everyone on Strava. We welcome your comments and discussion on this thread and hope you understand that your feedback is heard and has been discussed with the Strava team. We do our best to cater to all the needs of our community, knowing that new features and product changes will impact our members in different ways.

We don't currently have plans to revert the changes or build additional settings to customize default activity names. Our product continues to evolve and we hope you stick with us knowing that we take your feedback seriously.

  • I get the "morning run" or "afternoon ride" naming scheme but I also appreciated having my location automatically show up. Maybe you can do "Morning Run in Chicago, IL" or "Afternoon Ride in Philadelphia, PA" or something like that?
  • "The default activity name is easy to edit."

You make it sound like we can alter our default activity name, but you are actually just pointing out the ability to edit an individual activity name after the fact?

  • Sam's comment should be well taken.  Otherwise, viewing a feed of poorly named activities makes it impossible to know what you are looking at without clicking on the activity's map.

  • Im not big on the change as I have always liked the fact that the date and the ride location was part of the deafult name. Why not combine the styles? For example: "MM/DD/YYYY Anytown, USA: Morning ride or MM/DD/YYYY Anytown, USA: Evening Run.

I'd really like to see the date and location put back in the default activity name.

  • I always thought the default activity names from Garmin connect were a bit clumsy. I'd also second Sam's suggestions of having the place name in the title.

  • I can see the time that anyone on my wall posted a ride, why does it need an non-descriptive naming scheme like "morning ride"? It'd make much more sense to get rid of the "morning ride" scheme and use the date and location scheme as the default.

  • Combine the styles, the new and the old one!

  • Can you put in an option to change it back to the date, city etc? The 'morning ride' naming convention is pretty bland. Thanks.
  • An "I don't like this" option for these suggestion pages would be handy, because I'd definitely click it here.

  • So what has been done automatically before now has to be done manually. Just one question: WHY?

  • Why not build consistency changing mobile app version?

  • I want the "MM/DD/YYYY Anytown, USA" as default. Thanks! I live in two towns and the old naming was very handy for me.

  • Not a fan.  At all!

  • Not big on the blandness of the name either, and I'm pretty happy with the old way.  Particularly because it's assumed that all my activities are runs, which they aren't. So in addition to changing the type of activity manually, I have to now change the name as well! This is very tedious when you upload several (different) activities at once, which I tend to do most of the time.

  • I understand the effort of consistency but the choice for the default title is unfortunate. The location and the date is a must in the description.

  • So you've effectively eliminated the ability for your users to search their past activities by location, a feature I use regularly in analyzing past rides and exploring routes. Thanks... /s

  • I prefer the old dd/mm/yyyy town, region, country as the default for activities with GPS.  If necessary I'll then overwrite this manually.  Not fussed about activities without GPS, e.g. pool swims or windtrainer sessions.

  • I much prefer the old naming method, I like the date in my activity name and now means I have to manually enter this when it was already there before. Why not give users an option in settings to choose the naming convention, then everyone is happy?

  • Old naming convention much better. Please put it back or give us the option.
  • Does not appear customer community had any input into this change. Sure way to go out of business.

    Back it out change soonest.

  • Yet another user who prefers the old naming method, with at least the date included by default.  I will often rename my ride titles by always keep the date there. Oh well, I'm sure someone will come up with something to change it back for us.

  • I do not like the new naming convention.  I like the old naming convention much better.  It was just fine as it was.  "Morning Run" or "Evening Run" is too generic.  I don't use the mobile app so consistency between the two means nothing to me.

  • You specifically state, "The default activity name is easy to edit.".  Actually, no it's not.  I can't find anywhere to edit the default activity name.  I can only find the ability to edit an individual activity and these are the instructions you give in this post.  WTF?  Seriously?  You won't even let us change the default naming convention, even though you say you will?  This is a good way to get me not to use your app any longer and just Garmin.  Thanks, but no thanks.  This sucks.

  • No.  Just no.  Make it stop.

  • Choices are golden.

  • I'm requesting the old way back.  This new way is much worse for me.  For consistency, it would have been easy to make the mobile app *like* the other naming convention.

  • Yes, I'm with everyone else - bring the old way back please

  • Please go back to old naming convention! At lease make it configurable so that the user can choose!

  • Bring the old method back as the DATE is especially important. Here in Japan we have only recently seen the shift from Google maps with street view to the massively inferior Mapbox service. The Mapbox maps are years out of date and have lead to various errors on segments being recognized. For more remote rides the new map service is useless.  STRAVA your level service is slipping and these enforced changes without consultation or option will end up pushing paying members away.... SORT IT OUT !!!!

  • Strava, please bring back the old convention, or take some already mentioned suggestions about merging the two.   Having 1000s of rides with the same name is not easy to search for later on.
