Changes to default Activity names

Starting August 18th, we changed the way Strava automatically names your activities. Previously, when uploading from a device (via the Strava website or via a syncing program) your activities would be titled "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country". Now, your activities will follow the same naming convention as the Strava App. For example, "Morning Ride", "Afternoon Run", "Evening Run".

The default activity name is easy to edit. From the mobile app, when viewing one of your activities click on the "pencil" edit icon or select edit from the menu button. From the website, see the "pencil" edit icon to the left side of your activity page. You can also edit multiple activities from the "My Activities" view under the Training tab.

We made this change in an effort to build consistency between the Strava website and mobile app. Additionally, when viewing activities listed on the profile or Activity Feed, activities are always listed by date making it easy to determine when the activity took place.

September 9th, 2015

We understand that the new default activity names will not work for everyone on Strava. We welcome your comments and discussion on this thread and hope you understand that your feedback is heard and has been discussed with the Strava team. We do our best to cater to all the needs of our community, knowing that new features and product changes will impact our members in different ways.

We don't currently have plans to revert the changes or build additional settings to customize default activity names. Our product continues to evolve and we hope you stick with us knowing that we take your feedback seriously.

  • I'm in the minority it seems who likes the change.

Seems to provide a more generic way to look at when people are riding rather than the date and location. I prefer it because seeing someone who did a 'morning ride' for 50km is better than seeing someone who did a '13/09/2015 Fake Suburb' for 50km.

I find it better to congratulate someone as I can see when they did it and whether it's a thumbs up activity at that time.

  • So this is the list of my recent activities, when did I do them, where did I do them...

  • What a stupid change!! Please, listen to your users and change back.

  • Change it back to date and location!!!!!!!!

  • Here's a thought. Why not add a setting in the user profile for default activity name format. One can be Generic Title (i.e. Morning/Lunch/Afternoon/Evening/Night Run/Ride, etc.) the other can be Date & Location Title. That would be an easy fix!

  • That's already been suggested Keith, numerous times but Strava, in thro infinite wisdom, can't be arsed to do it.
  • We're all wasting our time guys - Strava has categorically stated that they won't change it back. Time to move on (but don't forget to cancel your subs first...)

  • This is rubbish, please change back.
  • I have really enjoyed using Strava over the last couple years. I haven't used anything else. But there are other apps out there that I am considering if straw is the type of company that does not want to listen to their customers. How about Garman connect? I would imagine 90% of strava users are using Garman anyway. Maybe we should all move over to Garmons social networking app.
  • Thanks for taking feedback seriously. Please change it back to the way it was.

  • Just utterly wrong. Either change it back or offer a default naming option in a user's profile. My feed consists of a never ending list of meaningless  'Evening Ride'

How can it possibly be preferable to have a default of place name and date/time replaced by this? Next you'll be rounding up the distance to the nearest 10 miles.

  • I hate this silly change ! Why not giving a choice ? Even Garmin Connect is more flexible...

Please vote after clicking the link above! I still hate this change. It is a lot of work to manually change the activity title as it used to be.

  • Change it back!

  • I am fine with it either way. I always edit, and usually right after the activity, so that's probably why both ways work fine for me. I could see, for example, how a person who downloads a week's worth of activities at a time might experience some issues.

  • What are the demarcation times between Morning, Lunch, Afternoon, and Evening?  Could these times please be made configurable, as I like to have a late lunch.  :-)

  • I always use my Garmin and never cellphone for record my rides. I really love if Strava let get back the old way of naming.

  • I love this change, it makes total sense! Now, why doesn't the Facebook share button appear when you edit/confirm activities synced from other services?

  • Go back please. Those names serve zero training purpose. Why do i have to go and change the LAME lunch ride to a date and place. This is very annoying.
  • Since you clearly have no intention of giving us back an option for location info, please at least include the date.

I used different gear for my runs & when I get prompted on my phone for every activity when I upload weekly from my Suunto, "Evening/Morning/Afternoon Run" gives me absolutely zero indication of what run it actually was. How are we supposed to know at a glance what day "Evening Run" was??

  • Garmin Connect app names each activity the proper way; the way Strava use to do it. Just sayin. You can also see more data such as cadence and stride.
  • First off, I'm impressed but not surprised that so many people are upset about this issue. I'm commenting again just because I've come across another way that Strava has bungled this... This London triathlon club has its athletes feeding into a Strava stream (bottom right of page here):

There are many members and they're all over the city, potentially doing activities in other countries or wherever. Yet it all looks the same boring "Lunch swim" "Morning ride" blah blah blah. So much more useful would be to see where these were by default!

  • As it is quite obvious Strava simply intend to ignore this thread, and continue to put their fingers in their ears whilst shouting 'la,la, la, not listening' it might be better to take to Facebook and Twitter and put the pressure on there instead.

  • I posted a message to the strava facebook page a few days ago. They ignore that just the same way they ignore this.

  • Really... Does it really matter? If it bothers you so much. Delete your account. Leave Strava.

Some things really are not that important, and i'm sure that there are far more important things to cry about...

  • Kev,

It's now more a matter of principle for me and, I suspect, lots of people.

The fact that Strava initially asked for feedback after having already made a change then, when the response was overwhelmingly negative, slapped its users in the face saying "well, we've done it now and, irrespective of what you customers want, we're not changing it back".

I'm a software engineer; if I treated paying customers that way, I'd soon be out of a job or out of business.

FWIW - I emailed Cycling Active (UK Magazine) suggesting they might like to cover this and my other gripe (that Strava have ignored for over 2 years) about having separate options for measurement units.
  • I throughly understand the principal of the upsetting matter... But for the percentage of user's this upsets, I'm sure that they'll be a larger percent of user's that are happy, don't care or haven't even noticed. And a massive amount of user's change the name anyway, which only takes a few moments to do. For me using my phone to upload, this has been the default names for well over a year (possibly longer?).

  • Well I voted with my money. Annual Premium subscription canceled and refund processed. Why pay for something that creates more work?
  • Please change it back, it was far easier to search activities before.

  • The old format was far more useful for searching activities ! At least, please make this configurable !! Thx
