Changes to default Activity names

Starting August 18th, we changed the way Strava automatically names your activities. Previously, when uploading from a device (via the Strava website or via a syncing program) your activities would be titled "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country". Now, your activities will follow the same naming convention as the Strava App. For example, "Morning Ride", "Afternoon Run", "Evening Run".

The default activity name is easy to edit. From the mobile app, when viewing one of your activities click on the "pencil" edit icon or select edit from the menu button. From the website, see the "pencil" edit icon to the left side of your activity page. You can also edit multiple activities from the "My Activities" view under the Training tab.

We made this change in an effort to build consistency between the Strava website and mobile app. Additionally, when viewing activities listed on the profile or Activity Feed, activities are always listed by date making it easy to determine when the activity took place.

September 9th, 2015

We understand that the new default activity names will not work for everyone on Strava. We welcome your comments and discussion on this thread and hope you understand that your feedback is heard and has been discussed with the Strava team. We do our best to cater to all the needs of our community, knowing that new features and product changes will impact our members in different ways.

We don't currently have plans to revert the changes or build additional settings to customize default activity names. Our product continues to evolve and we hope you stick with us knowing that we take your feedback seriously.

  • The old way was much better. Please change it back, or please give us the option to define our own default title.

  • I agree with most of the others here. The old default name was great. Please reinstate it, or give people a choice.

  • Another vote to change it back to mm/dd/yyyy City, State

  • Really don't like the new system - better to have the default naming in the mobile app as was the case for the website. Morning Run is just generic... I used to like seeing the date and location, a much better record and easier to browse. Please change it back....

  • Love it! I never stick with default names, preferring a more descriptive title, so a shorter simpler default is easier to edit, especially on mobile as I usually do. Thanks guys!

  • Much preferred the old naming format.

I would vote for a return to the date, location format please.

  • This is not good. The old way was much more useful to me. I don't care that the default activity name is easy to change, i don't want to change it from the original useful name. Please consider leaving it alone.

  • Looks like Strava employees don't do dogfooding. #weird #strange #awkward #pity

  • Please revert, or allow us to specify the default naming convention. I use the Training Log History page to view activities by type + name. If I'm looking for a route to use, I'm not going to use a route called "Morning Run", I'll use a route called "7/15/2015 - Nashua, NH" because most likely, it wasn't on a treadmill. Runs during the winter are easily found by the name "1/20/2015 - ...".

  • I agree that the old way was much better. I also wish you would change it back, or give us the option to define our own default title.

  • Please provide the option, at least, for the formerly useful and descriptive date/location default activity title.

  • Another vote for the old naming convention or an option to pick between the two - a list where every entry is 'Afternoon ride' isn't useful.  Let the computer do the tedious work of filling in a meaningful name - having to manually edit every entry to set it to something that can be done automatically (date, location) doesn't make sense...

  • Old was better, at least please leave an option to choose "new" or "old" naming convention.

  • Horrible. LOCATION is an important piece of information for those of us who have activities in various cities and even states. BRING BACK DEFAULT LOCATION, pretty please!!!

  • Do not like this at all. This is a step backward in functionality. Please change it back.

  • Sorry, I think the old naming convention was much better. Please put it back or give us the option to select the default name.

  • Another vote for bringing back the old format!! I much prefer to be able to look up "where" my activity was, rather than if it was the morning, lunch or afternoon.

At least give us the option to select which label we want for our activities. We can have a default for our gear used, why not the activity labels?????

  • Surely "fixing" consistency between the mobile app and the website would be better served by making the app apply some useful information instead of making the website lose information?

What seems to have happened here is that the website naming had dumbed down.

How things to be easily distinguished when everything gets a simple "morning" or "afternoon" tag?

  • I prefer the old naming convention but, this too will pass....I'm sure that I will adapt.

  • Add me to the list of people not liking this change. Please revert. If you want consistency then change the Strava mobile app to use date/location as default title.

  • Looks like at least 95% of those commenting here are against this change...including me! You guys blew it. Do you ever ask real users what they prefer? How about gathering requirements from your customers? Please revert, or provide an option for each user to choose which default is to be used for their new activities.

  • Please build in functionality for setting our own default names with some smart naming.  All my <10km rides would name as "$morning/afternoon Commute", all my >10km rides would auto-name as "$location Ride".  That would be sweet!

  • I agree with most of the other comments here that this is a backward change taking away useful functionality. As for consistency, I have the Date and location naming for all my activities more than three years back and Strava is now ending this consistency. At least you should have an option to use the date and location activity naming.

  • I much more prefer the mm/dd/yyyy City, State default method of naming rides over the Morning/Afternoon/Evening default method. I usually change the name of the ride anyway, but I like having the date of the ride in the title of my ride. So it becomes somewhat tedious to type in the date every time when editing the name of the ride.

  • I just did a 66 mile "lunch ride."  That makes a ton of sense.

  • Please, please, please add the ability to define your own "default" activity name(s). The ability to change the "Morning ride", "Afternoon ride", "Evening ride" texts would be enough for me and would save me the time to always change it after each ride!

  • Exactly what Sam Stein says.  The location is really important.  Seeing the locations of others on the feed is great.  Seeing a stack of "Morning Ride" and "Afternoon Ride" down the list is pretty dull. I also like to go through old rides and see location.  Give us some options please instead of the new default which isn't useful.
