  • Just like many others before me, I would like to have a list of approved contacts that have a permanent link that shows them my current (or last recorded) activity status whenever they click on it. This way I don't need to send my wife a text every time I start an activity. Sure, the choice to send a text or not send a text is good for certain activities, I would maybe like to turn off the beacon for small activities of no interest, but for the majority of them, I would just like her to have a link bookmarked that she could just open in her browser and see my status.

  • As others have observed, Beacon is less than optimal in conception and implementation. In many cases, it is not a reasonable replacement for the myriad of "find friends" apps that provide better functionality. Beacon is especially uninteresting if one does not record efforts on a phone (yes, I know, "Garmin integration someday"). My wife follows me on iPhone FindFriends, without my having to run the Strava app which consumes the battery before completion of a 6 hour ride. (Perhaps it is more useful for runners.)

As quite a few Premium members, who have requested other features for years, have observed (one assumes, sarcastically):

"I gather the feature (beacon) was also very heavily requested."

I am able to find only a few requests in Strava forums for features that became Beacon. It is unfathomable why engineering would spend resources of it, compared with features that have been heavily requested for years. Two well-worn examples:

  • I don't know anyone who will use it since they already have other apps that do the same thing only better. I can't even say that maybe it's good for runners since a number of our cyclists are also serious runners and they are not going to use it. Most also have phones but do not use them because of battery life, they use Garmin instead. As for lots of requests for something like Beacon, I find that very difficult to believe since a search only finds a few while the upload photos from desktop DOES have a huge number of requests over several years!!! Come on, at least tell the truth about things. If you're not going to do something for whatever reason just tell us and we'll drop the subject and quite wasting our time requesting it.  I am interested also in knowing who you dropped the Cuore jerseys and why the only jersey you now have is BLACK. Who wears black? It doesn't stand out on the road and I'm a member of several clubs totaling around 200 members, and almost no one wears a black jersey!

  • @Matt McK. Thanks, it works. if I don't add contacts, the send message button allows me to use Hangout or email.

  • Elle,

I know you mentioned this feature a while back, and I am glad to see the progress.

I did want to highlight again the feature I miss from Runkeeper - The ability to have a notification automatically sent out when I complete a ride.

My wife knows I commute to work each day, and now I manually text her my arrival each time. Many people have loved ones that know when their rider leaves, but it would be nice to send notice that they arrived at their destination, when hitting "Finish/complete" an auto notification would be nice. Otherwise, this is duplicative to "Find my friends".

  • I used Beacon for the first time yesterday and it worked great!

Fantastic feature and will be greatly appreciated by my family on my next 100 miler!

    Well done!

  • Whenever I've used this feature, my safety contacts can't see my GPS coordinates. This should be an essential feature, but maybe I'm just blind.

  • I had an incident today where I left my phone at work and didn't want to go back for it but wanted to be able to track my husband's ride home. Unfortunately, even though I have a Strava account, I am unable to track his ride unless I have that link that is in the text message. It would be great if there was a backup way to view someone's ride as their safety contact without having to receive a text.

  • My contact receives a text with a link, but the link doesn't show a map

  • I think this is a great feature. I have used it a few times to track my husband during races.

I was very impressed with how little battery life it uses.

A few things I miss that would be great if it could be added:

    1)  Distance of activity (similar to "active time")

    2) The ability to view the activity in the Strava app - as a Strava user myself I would prefer everything Strava in one place instead of in a browser

    3) Following on point 2, it would be nice if you could have default settings that Beacon always shares your activity with selected friends in real time without having to set it up before each activity.

  • I like this feature. I have been using Road ID for quite a while. Because Road ID is free, I suppose Beacon will not be a Premium feature for long.

But one of my contacts also receives a link that does not lead to a map. I tested it with my iPhone and that worked fine. But my contact's Samsung Android doesn't get the map.

  • Update to this post - 27 August:

I have just found that the issue with Beacon tracking properly on my Android phone has been that with the latest S/W update on Android, when Power Saving is activated, tracking is de-activated and Strava Beacon won't function correctly. Simple solution - don't use Power Saving when you want to use Beacon. Cheers, Owen :)

When it is operating properly, Beacon should be a good replacement for the app I am now using for this tracking service -  that's a quite adequate service called LocatoWeb. I would prefer Beacon if it working properly because the tracking function can be achieved in the one App.  However, at the moment Beacon seems to have a couple of issues: 1. With auto-pause active, Beacon frequently fails to respond when a ride is resumed.  I have de-activated auto-pause in the Settings menu to overcome this issue.    2. However, on this morning's ride, Beacon started properly and recorded my activity time/duration but it showed me as stationary at the start point - no distance covered in the 2 1/2 hours of the activity which actually covered 60+ km.  All location services on the Android phone were running. So my contacts did not have any idea where I was throughout the activity!  3. I cannot see how to stop Beacon showing up in the "Notifications" area at the top of the phone screen.  So even when the activity has finished, Beacon has been stopped and the ride saved and uploaded, the Beacon notification remains active (although showing stopped) in the notifications area.  So in summary, a great idea that seems to need some more work before I can use it. (maybe there is something I'm missing in this app that will fix the issues - let me know.)  :) Cheers, Owen.

  • Beacon Prompted me to upgrade to Premium as my family and I think it is a really good safety feature.

I thought I should make you aware that I am unable to send a message to two of my safety contacts, via all three of the options available: Google Chat, Facebook Messenger and my phones messenger. Their contact details are correct. Upon selecting the service It prompts me to set the service as the default SMS service on the handset. When I click send it converts the message to an MMS and then fails to send or just simply fails to send. Any advise!?

  • I am a veteran that is a part of a riding program called Ride2Recovery.com.  All disabled VETS and fellow riders in the program use Strava as a tool to track all riders during the week on their speed, progress and distance.

My wife complained that our iphone tracker app was not accurate and delayed.  I began the Strava premium during a recent 50 mile ride in Barrington, IL and she along with many others people loved it.

***Main issue*** and responses to other posts:  My main issue with the beacon  on the premium is that you can accidentally hit the stop button and the beacon shuts off and will NOT.. I say again, the beacon SHUTS OFF AND WILL NOT come back on!!! Even though you resume your ride with Strava. the beacon stays OFF!  When this happens, my wife as like (@Jimmy Hoffa) she and my EMT family get the following message: "update hadn't been received from this athlete.  Probably do to being out of range or the battery may have "died"  The sad thing, the rider is out working their heart out while back at home, concerned people start calling you about are you okay?  The rider's first words are what? I am fine!   Strava, this is Not a good flaw!  There should be an immediate fix for this?  The info button to change modes is way too close to the stop button and causes for my stop button to get hit by accident.   SO #1, put the mode button at the top, not near the stop button.  #2, If the stop button is hit, a rider shouldn't have to end the ride, restart and resend new link to all safety recipients. This has happened way too many times and is a pain in the Ace.  It is like calling wolf to your safety recipients and you don't even know it unless you catch yourself hitting the stop button and resuming or you get a recall. #3, There has to be away that a rider can hit a solid pause manually.  Like today, I refused to hit stop during my 2 rest stops.  During my stops it kept going from autopause to unpause, repeat... and I ended up with 10+ more minutes of non-riding which was actually just unpaused time while I used my phone with movement.  This is not a safety feature, but should be worked into the #1 issue so a manual pause stops Strava from recording your time progress, but still shows your location.

@Lenny Lessel:  Strava beacon does drain my iphone in 2.5 hours.  I am sure Strava  will work on this.  For me, I place my phone battery on "Low Power Mode"  I picked up a portable battery phone charger for up to 3x's for under $20.00 which all riders should have for safety while riding.

@Scott Phelps @SarahCailean and @Alban Auzill:  Text and Data concerns:  Yes, Strava gives you a Text that you may send up to 3 people.  My wife does not have a smart phone right now, so I copy and paste the link and message into email and FB messenger.  Small extra step, but your peeps will still get the link and can follow you.  With that said, you can have more than 3 people watching.  You can even send more texts via copy/pasting the link.

I close with a comment back to @John M:  Sir, safety may not be a top priority to you.  If a rider happens to crash off the roadway where nobody sees them, they may lay there until they are overdue for their check-in or for them to arrive at home.  If a no-show does happen at the finish line of a ride or a scheduled check-in does not happen, at least the safety contacts can immediately respond.  Strava gives them a tool to find out where the rider is and get themselves including emergency personnel if needed to the aid of the rider.  All it is going to take is saving 1 life and it will all be worth it.

Okay Strava, get that "Stop Button issue fixed and it will be a good product!

    Thank you!  "Steve Gray"

  • @Ashley Dale: When I upgraded to premium, I activated the beacon.  When I hit record for my ride it asked for 3 contacts to send texts to.  If you are not using texts, use just anyone in your address book and click send text.  Instead of sending the text, just copy the link and message, close your text app and now go paste your link/message on messenger, email or any other way of communication.  Your safety contacts can click on it and go right to it. If you are sending the texts and that is not working...I can't help you.  But as long as you copy/paste the link from the text preview, you should be good to go.  Hope that this helps? ~Steve~

  • I am using Beacon on the Android App and generally am find it very good but I am having one issue.

I recently started commuting 17 miles each way to work and my wife was a bit worried about it. Both she and my 4 year old son love watching the blue dot!

However, my commute home starts from an underground car park where there is no cellular data access or wi-fi. The changing facilities are also on the same level with no service.

If I start an activity and try to send the beacon link with no service it won't let me. I guess this is because it needs to contact the server to set up the link.

If I start my activity just as I go down to get changed and send the link my activity is then running for a few minutes until I get ready to go. Even with auto-pause this is not ideal from my point of view and it also doesn't seem to work well. My wife often says "the link didn't work".

I don't want to have to stop once I'm outside to turn on the beacon.

Please add some kind of way for Beacon to send the link when you are back in cell service. I can imagine lots of people leave work out of underground car parks.

Reading the other feedback I have learned the trick on Android of not specifying a contact so I can pick from other sharing options like email or WhatsApp. This is going to be harder to do if Beacon was going to send the link when entering cell service as you would need to have it set before hand.

It would be good if the links actually lasted a lot longer, ie, days. Clicking on it with no activity running wold just display a message to the viewer saying "No Activity in progress" and not show the location.

  • I LOVE Beacon but I consider it less of a safety feature than a peace of mind feature.

This past week my family and I stayed with friends in Massachusetts, my old collegiate stomping grounds. I took my bike and went on several long rides, a couple into NH. Normally I'm very good at estimating how long I'll be gone but being in a new environment, that was impossible to do with any reliability because I just wanted to explore. Beacon gave my wife peace of mind while I roamed through some beautiful countryside.

The flip side of beacon is that I didn't need to worry about cutting my ride short. So when my trip to the NH border was further than I estimated, I just continued on, knowing I was turning a 2+ hour ride into a 4 hour wide. No need to stop and text or call and guess at my return time, I just kept riding, knowing that she would be able to see how far away I was and she would be able to plan her day accordingly.

I loved it, she loved it and her friends got a kick out of watching my routes. I may not always use it when I'm on typical rides in my hometown but for riding on unknown roads during vacation, it's brilliant. Great job Strava.

  • @Matt McKinzie - Thanks for the email workaround. I think Strava are selling the Beacon feature short by not making this more obvious. I've had problems getting the text into the messaging app (I'm using Freedompop on an old phone. It's totally free but has quirks). Sending by email works perfectly. Cheers!

  • @Fred Franks mentioned getting a notification when an activity finished so someone knows he got where he was going. Check out Strava's "If This Then That" integration (http://ifttt.com) It can send a message anywhere when an activity ends. Does loads of other handy things too!

  • While we wait for a way to start Beacon from the iWatch could you issue some instructions about how to use to use both Beacon and the iWatch as a work around.  I believe if I start a ride from the phone to use the Beacon feature then you do not record data from the watch, (for example heart rate).  Can I start a ride from the watch and some how turn on Beacon on the phone?

  • I'm running an ultra so gunna need to rely on a GPS watch with 15-20 hours battery life. Be great to have that GPS watch sync with Strava beacon mode. Days like that, there's a support crew (aka wife and kids) chasing you round the bush. Practically, this would be really useful. Love beacon mode though - well done guys!

  • Fairly new Strava user using my free month of premium and so far I like it. I'm only a recreational rider and my wife can see where I'm at at anytime I'm on the bike. About a 10-15 second delay from real time and she has no problem opening the link on iPhone 6+ (even with this aggravating new ios update). Works like a champ for us!

  • Love Beacon, but on my last couple of rides, the app will not send a text message with the link, even after multiple tries.  Any suggestions?  Also, I second the request for Beacon technology on the iWatch app.

  • I would like to have beacon through my Garmin Edge.

Currently for every ride, i get two rides in STRAVA, one from my GARMIN and another from the STRAVA Beacon.

  • sounds like you have to record the activity in Strava for this to work?  Won't get used much as many/most people record their activity with Garmin or similar.

  • if the user has a route suggested, the message in the beacon should include in it the estimated arrival time (clearly state estimated) whereupn the sender can edit the text (as they can do now).  small change, but big outcome (also include the name of the route within the message - beacon follower might know the route by name and can anticipate more events)
