Strava's new white color theme - Tell us what you think

What's new in Version 5.0.0 on Strava for iOS:

Strava has a new color theme that's easier to read, especially in bright sunlight. We're excited for you to give it a try and leave your feedback for us.

Read what we say on our blog, Turning the Lights On.

Hello - Thanks to all of you who have left your feedback so far about the new white theme for iOS. We appreciate it, and your comments have been read.

This new design was carefully researched and tested to both improve overall legibility and create a consistent design across all platforms. We understand that as with any change, there's an adjustment period and some users may have different preferences. We'll share your thoughts with the team.

Sometime in the future, we would like to consider bringing the black background back as a preference in your account settings. There is currently no timeline for this project however.

  • I'm not a big fan of the new color scheme. I don't use the app while riding, so daytime visibility isn't a factor. Maybe make the cookie scheme user selectable?

  • I think it might be OK in some situations but I had no problem with the dark theme, and per my use case, prefer it.  The white theme is almost like having a flashlight.

What would be great would be a toggle between the two.  To permanently switch to something else, from something that Strava's ios app has had for a long time, doesn't seem that wise.

I'm surprised that was the priority development for a x.0 release that users have been clamoring for over things like double-digit distance or the ability to view lap splits versus 1mile/1km splits-only.   Sometimes iTunes offers the ability to downgrade to a previous rev.  I'm going to look into that.

  • Not a fan personally.  To me it's much harder to see the separations in the Feed.  The black seemed much better.

  • How about an option  to choose light or dark screen.  Dark screen is better for my eyes.

  • The blog post makes it sound like the Strava app is exclusively designed for riding in bright sunlight, and I think it's clear that's what the Strava designers are thinking.

I'm sure it's great for day-time, but please just do what so many other apps are doing with their light/dark themes, and have a switch to choose or an automatic day/night mode.

In-car GPS devices used to be just like this; bright and colourful and white... and then they realised it made them really bad for use at night and they all now have night mode that kicks in at sunset.

  • The new white colour scheme is really poor, for people like myself with an eye condition, the white makes it incredibly difficult to follow. Users should at least be given the choice.

  • Some people may like it, but I strongly prefer the previous black/ dark view. In my opinion you guys had the perfect interface, and now it's just bright and washed out. I ran tonight in low light like i usually do and it's blinding. I suppose I can invert the iPhone colours to make it sort of like it used to be for night running.

    Don't like it, 'nuff said.

  • Im afraid I hate it - a white background makes pictures, infographics, banners and menus look awful and difficult to distinguish between - this is a gripe I have always had with the website which I hate and now you have done it to the app!!! Please listen to your customers and provide the option to choose or change it back - there's not a lot of positive feedback in these forums...

  • Elle -

Couple of reactions to your article "Tell us what you think"... to which you have seem to have responded, "You can STFU now."

What is perhaps most important, what seems most apparent to everyone outside of your team, is that the Strava devs did very little meaningful research prior to rolling out this release.

If the black on white feature had been well researched, your customer use case scenarios would have told you that people use their devices in a variety of light conditions, not exclusively at high-noon in equatorial regions.

Your research also seems to have avoided any direct customer input. Had you polled your users, you would have likely encountered the 99% negative feedback during R&D. Perhaps this info would have prompted you to think twice before pushing out an universally despised update, simultaneously killing a feature your customers valued greatly.

Adding insult to injury, in making your claims that black on white is indisputably easier to read, you demonstrate little awareness of the actual science related to legibility. It is as if your team's research went no further than glancing at the inverted text that you blithely present as "proof" in your breezy blog post.

Additionally, your researchers seem willfully unaware of the existence of, or rational behind, purpose-built reading devices like the Kindle which feature white text on black interfaces -- in the interest of legibility. Perhaps it did it not occur to your team to ask why Amazon, one of the savviest UX companies on the planet, does not force consistency of interface between the Kindle and the Amazon browser interfaces.

Looking ahead, I'm not sure how others will respond, but your willingness to solicit feedback then tell your users to pound sand is disappointing, dishonest, rude. That said, I'm grateful to you. A heady dose of disrespect is a good reminder that it is healthy to look at competitive brands. It helps me to rethink the money I spend on a premium Strava subscription and whether that continues to offer meaningful value vs. the free Strava product or other products in the market.

To enable a better comparison during my "adjustment period" I am switching from my premium subscription to a free subscription. I'm thankful to your dev team for making this a very user-friendly process. Perhaps your researchers will soon be focusing their talents on this feature.

    From the Strava mobile app:
More > Settings > Manage Subscription. Toggle off Auto-Renew.

Lastly, I should mention that choosing to shift to your free product is not a knee-jerk reaction. In 2016 Strava has cranked out one half-baked update after another. Live Segments is a poorly integrated product. Beacons are minimally meaningful. The white/black interface debacle, accompanied by your tone-deaf response, is simply another signal that Strava is slipping in its ability to serve its core customers. While the lights are indeed on, no-one seems to be home.

  • Please allow for a toggle for light and dark in next update. It's just too bright in certain situations. I review my stats in bed at night and it's too bright.

  • This white screen is so bad on all levels , Handsdown ! Looks cheap, and it if anything hurts your eyes !!!!!

Bring back the Black screen or give us an option to change the screen colours within in setting options. #bringbacktheblack

Instead of wasting time and recourses such as "Turning on the lights - Changing the screen to White" or "Which city is faster", hows about focus more on building a more structured training section for premium members. Rant Over \m/

  • Dear Strava, If you would like to introduce a new color, why not leave it up to the user to choose?

I.e. introduce a button for black or white background, not make that decision for the user (not stating if and maybe for the future, future selling kills trust!).

So my reply is: No I don`t like it.

  • Did u guys consider battery life when choosing super bright white? It's the highest battery consumption colour u could have picked. Along with the fact it's a GPS based app and the new white colour theme I'd imagine that my battery will be done before even the shortest activity that requires me to use the app on screen. Get it back to black ASAP.... Oops my battery's died :0(

  • Not my choice of colours. How is white on light grey supposed to be easier to see? Downloaded the update and regretting it now. Please let me have the old scheme. Or better still, give us an option to customise to suit.

  • Hate it. Deleted the app and restored to the previous version from backup. Please enable a toggle between white & black in futures releases.

  • Terrible new white theme!!!!!! This kills the app and my eyes!!!!!! Give me back the black UI!!!! Why you can't make it an option to choose which UI to use? Strava was so cool and different from all other apps by its cool dark theme. Now its gone!!!!!!

  • Its HARDER TO READ, NOT EASIER!!!!!!

And for those who use OLED screen, this white screen kills your battery!!!! (I'm using iPhone)

  • Undo undo undo! Please go back to dark background until you bring the update for background preference option in setting.
Obviously most riders look at strava data at home, not on the road except maybe for the map which is the same in both versions. But dark background at home is much better because of higher contrast.

  • My eyes really hurt looking at the White, it's one of the worst thought out changes by any company in recent years. I know loads of people, including me, that are cancelling premium until it changes back or gives an option too.

  • Hi,
Is it possible to add an option to settings dialog to set users preferred color theme? Another idea make it like tweetbot app for iOS and switch the theme by daytime.
I loved the dark one!!!! That would be great.

    Cheers,
    Marco

  • Well that's one premium user who has cancelled their subscription. If this is the kind of 'development' my fees are going towards I'd rather drink an overpriced cup of coffee.

  • Yeah, I know that changes always make people complain (!), but the new white background is not a good update from my perspective. It's very intense and much more difficult to scan for me, and I find it gives me a headache to look at. It's much less visible than the previous version - it's not really clear what the problem was that this was intended to solve.

For runners like me, Strava is not something used in broad daylight anyway (most about post-run review and discussion) so the blog comments about cycling in bright light is not relevant.

Please change it back - or at least have an option to toggle to the previous version!

  • Appears like everybody (or almost) want to back to dark background, as per post seen here and blog. At least, give us the option to change into both backgrounds adding option at configuration panel. For me, the dark was perfect and save battery also. Regards.

  • White! Don't like it. Think it looks kind of cheap. Might technically be better for your eyes but I'm not convinced! Is it just me?

  • I Hate It! I guess if someone were tracking a ride in bright sunlight, and staring at the screen instead of the road it might make sense, but for sitting back at night and reviewing and commenting it's a disaster. Anyone serious about their runs or rides is likely using a watch or computer. This is just way to bright, and loses definition between items in my feed. Please give us a choice in the apps preferences, or return it to its old look!
