Strava keeps crashing on Oneplus 3

Oneplus 3, Android 8.0.0, Oxygen 5.0.1

Strava runs OK for a few minutes (just tested and got just over 8 mins) and then shuts down. On a restart I get informed it's recovered from an error. It happens every time. As far as I can see all the background power saving settings are disabled.

Not much use and I'm not getting my money's-worth from Premium either!!

  • I'm on a Pixel 2 running pure Android from Google.

This has been a constant issue for three weeks now, and I tweeted Strava, and got no response.  :(

  • I click finish ride, and the following screen that says "upload activity" is completely frozen.  I can't place a cursor, I can't identify if the ride was a commute or private, or change bike, and then Android warns me that Strava is eating my battery.

It has to be a direct conflict with Android 8 itself.  Pixel 2's don't have the carrier specific limitations to Android that all the other phones have, so it's definitely not phone specific.

Really surprised that no one from Strava is responding on this topic.  :/

I really don't want to go back to Runkeeper.

  • I'm on a OnePlus 6 (8gb ram, 128gb storage version) Strava gives me a message everytime I use it "Strava has recovered from a problem". Very frustrating and annoying

  • I have the same issue. If I start only the strava app it crashs maybe 90% of time I use it.

I don`t know the little lock symbol and will try it.

Last time I used strava and komoot at the same time. When I navigate with komoot in the background the recording of strava works fine. Nokia 7+

  • OnePlus 6 user here, came from a faultless Galaxy S5. Did a 19mile ride on Saturday and it failed to record 9 of the miles. I've tried everything suggested here, and it's not helping. Do we know if Strava, OnePlus and Android are working on this? Feel like I've wasted my money on a new phone, but obviously changing app for gps recording is much cheaper than changing my phone. Could be bye bye Strava for me.

  • I have a Nokia 6.1 with the same problem and don't have the lock item on the Strava app so I can't try that. I have done all the other suggested things with power saving. Strava worked fine on my Samsung J3 though although it was always running out of memory, thus the "upgrade" to the Nokia.

Please do and update fix Strava!

  • The issue is related to all Nokia Phones with Android 8.x.

    Here is reported the issue:

I will try to deactivate the following services and give it a try:

  • I got a Huawei android 8.0 and it is the same story. Works a couple of minutes and then silent crash.
Will try the lock app next time I run. Hopefully it will work!

  • Strava still crashes for me (OnePlus 3), even when locked. Though it does at least seem a bit less frequent now, but that could just be chance.

I'm not sure it's safe to assume what works for you will work for everyone else.

  • Same issue here. I can't do a single activity without it crashing silently. I'll try locking the tab, but, I also went to battery>battery optimization and turned that off for Strava as it restricts background usage.

Hopefully this does the trick !

  • I was facing the exact same issue on my OnePlus 3T phone. I was able to finally resolve the issue and have written a blog post on how to do it. Check it out here http://codingfundas.com/how-to-fix-the-strava-crashing-issue-on-oneplus-3t/index.html

  • Since a few weeks Strava keep crashing on my phone midst activities.

It's not an ONeplus 3 but an Iphone hence I do not know if the issue is exactly the same but the outcome is unfortunately the same.

I do use Endomondo for the recording as Strava constantly lets me down.  Most of them I put both of them at the same time on and then I see that Strava crashed during the ride but Endomondo worked out well.

I can only recommend everyone to do the same. You record with Endomondo and then upload the .gpx file from Endomondo in Strava.

Only solution for me. Strava does not seem to care about our problems...

  • I have the issue on a Huawei, my 'solution' is to never let the screen sleep...

  • I'm having the same issue on my OP3 as well. I'll try the lock thing on my next run and see how it goes.

I'm also using the Couch to 5K app and that sometimes does the same as well.

Just read about turning the battery optimisation off for the app. I'll give that ago as well.

  • Sorry guys. Google Fit upgraded and is fully stable with my phone and OSwear. Strava's been deleted. Thanks for listening, Strava.... :/

  • Well it looks like the battery optimisation fix has worked for me. I've managed to record my last 3 runs without a hitch, never managed that before.

    Thanks for the help.

  • I use  One Plus 3t(Android 8.0.0 Oxygen OS 5.0.5, Strava ver. 65.0.0)

I've faced the following problem with STRAVA mobile application:

When I'm logging for a few minutes I am waiting for my training results, but I get "the data could be not synchronized".

If I delete the application and install it again, the first time everything works. But if I close it  and log in - the problem is the same.

I can log in my account via WEB.
I tried to install this application in other smartphones with previous 5.1Android version - it functions there.
Are there any ideas how to solve this problem?

  • I had high hopes that the android upgrade from Oreo to Pie (9.0) on the Nokia 6.1 would solve this issue, but unfortunately that's not the case.

So kind people at Strava, what are you going to do about this; will you finally offer a solution or should I just look for an alternative service to track rides?

    Kind regards,

    Nigel

  • Same issue with Samsung Galaxy S9 android version 9. Error appears right when going to record activity mode. Wife has same phone and her's still works. My phone has many more apps installed than hers but where do I start deleting apps? I've tried killing running apps but no help.

  • Just found what may be a workaround from Strava support. An app called Wahoo can link to you Strava account and it uploads your ride automatically to your Strava account.

  • I just fixed my Strava (I think). There is a thing with this Andriod phone and OS level that gives permissions to each app that use location services. It was turned off for Strava. I did 21 miles this morning and it worked.
Sure it was not a fault with the Strava app BUT if the error code given was a little more descriptive, I would have found the permissions problem much faster. I never saw such a permissions list on older versions. None of the help offered mentions location permissions.

  • I fixed mine, did a 45 km ride yesterday and it didn't crash at all, you just have to lock Strava in the recent apps function by clicking on the 3 dot icon.

OnePlus 3 with latest Android and Oxygen OS updates
