Auto flag cyclists in run segments

Hi, would it be possible to automatically flag people who cycle on run segments. Anyone moving at world record mile pace or above usually gives it away

  • I'm totally annoyed to see running challenges leaders which are clearly cyclists, when do you plan this to be done???

  • I recently moved to a new area and had to flag dozens of activities to get rid of the cyclists. It was pretty obvious, because it's a trail run with a steep 1/2 mile downhill at the end where the "runners" were reaching and exceeding 30mph.

As a Strava premium member, why won't customer support or someone from the Strava team at least respond to why they don't think this (very easy to solve) issue is worth their effort?

  • I'm seeing run times on segments in my local park that would have broken the world record for that distance. If there's a flag system in place, surely it would catch times that are faster than Hicham El Guerrouj (world record holder of the mile, 1500m, 2000m)?

  • I spend my life flagging car rides and bike rides on running segments. There’s no way Strava’s auto-flagging system has any sort of intelligence built into it, because some of these may be under 1 minute/mile on very long distances.

Just yesterday I flagged three “running” activities that were each over 300 MILES long, under 1 minute per mile for every “split,” yet were allowed to take CR’s on a bunch of segments. These were in no way accidental. The users had hopped into their car, started Strava, driven across the country, then stopped Strava. At no point did their speed/pace decrease to anything remotely resembling a human physical activity.

The worst part is that these are almost always repeat offenders. You flag their CR, refresh the leaderboard, and another one of their activities takes the CR. You flag… and so on, until you get banned from the system for abusing flags.

There is one guy SKATES the trail I used to run on EVERY DAY, SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. He clearly titled his activities “Evening Skate” then added “Skating” in the description, yet persisted in tagging those activities as runs. He’d go 10 or even 15 miles at times, going under 5 minutes per mile for the entire duration. No auto-flagging going on.

This is beyond idiotic and makes leaderboards a complete joke, especially for runners since we have to deal not only with blatant cheaters like this, but with cyclists/triathletes who don’t bother to change their activity type.

  • I came to make a thread along these lines, this is sorely needed.  As a runner using strava in an area with tons of cyclists, it's testing my patience.  I have to flag cycling activities that break my running KOMs 2-5 times per week.  Frankly, I'm about ready to switch to another platform, it seems pretty clear the focus is on cyclists and runners are a second thought, which is fine, but doesn't encourage me to continue using it.

I think an autoflag feature for an entire activity could help with this issue as well.  If an activity contains a world record or something along those lines the whole thing should eb flagged, this would prevent people from having to individually flag numerous segments.

  • Unfortunately don't think Strava is listening to the requests.
As a premium/summit user, it is extremely frustrating to have to flag a cyclist on my segments nearly every week. I know ex-CR holders on popular bike routes who gave up their segment due to having to flag a cyclist daily...
Anything exceeding world record pace should automatically be flagged. It's really not that difficult.

  • Here’s a good example of Strava’s automatic flagging hard at work:

    https://www.strava.com/activities/259789356/segments/60032954846

This segment is part of a 5k that’s run on an airport runway, but people evidently start Strava while on an actual airplane. Strava happily obliges, granting them a course record for “running” at a casual pace of 33s/mi.

  • Another exemple : https://www.strava.com/segments/4325661?filter=overall

The first 4 champions don't run but do biking ... and if they were running they have beat the world record for marathon ...

    Please fix this !
