Mountain Bike as separate activity type or tag

Please add mountain biking to the list of activities in the app because the cals vs speed are very different from road riding. Also a count down to workout start would be a good feature.

  • Come on Strava, please give us MTB category.  Screw the previous KOMs,  Trails and conditioons change daily in the UK!

  • Impressive that this has not been happening for 8 years...

  • Come on Strava, still nothing sorted. I have cancelled my Summit membership because of this issue and will use Garmin for my data now. You will lose out to other Apps

  • I didn’t quit my “Summit” membership over this particular issue. I quit because of a growing handful of issues which led me to believe Strava as a company has pivoted away from a focus on end users. I’ll stick with giving my money to companies who see me as the customer and not the product.

  • Time for the semi-annual baffled head-shake at why this still isn't a thing.

Newest frustration: Groups <-- They become all but useless when you have a mix of primarily MTB riders to primarily road riders. I mean it's fun to see John (not his real name) gallop to the top of the leaderboard with hundreds of miles per week... but I'm more impressed with Sally (is her real name) slamming down 75 hard-earned MTB miles.

I upped my paid subscription when you brought the chronological feed back (like I said I would -- even though it's still kinda broken), but I may have to cancel again.

  • Well, it's 2020.  This thread is over 7 years old.  They asked us to fill out a survey 3 years ago on how to create a new activity type for MTB, and still nothing.  And they have the nerve to get rid of leaderboards for non-paying members saying they've brought us tons of improvements this year?  MTBers have been asking for this one key improvement for countless years.  I've bought a membership in the past, hoping this would drive them to pay more attention to MTBers.  Nope.  Now they're taking features away?  One thing that bothered me in buying a membership was that many of the features you got as a subscriber was for roadies.  Simply put, Strava is for runners and roadies.  Everything else in an afterthought.  Sorry, but I'm out.  I'm not going to share my data with an app that doesn't give me back anything I want.

The question now is what app is going to replace Strava for MTBers?

For me it's going to be combo of Trailforks and Garmin for now, unless something better comes along.  Any other suggestion?

  • I agree. If someone from strava doesn’t give a definitive answer in 2 weeks, I’m not going to re subscribe either.

    Please don’t ignore us

  • Unfortunately the situation after 7 years of this request outlines its true strava nature: it is an application for riders and runners and not for MTB.

I won't be switching to the paid version either.

  • Hi, new user here who is absolutely flabbergasted that this is not an option for an app as mature as Strava.

  • Emily, I certainly hope you discovered this incredible oversight before you may have decided to give them your hard earned money. I vowed 7 years ago in this forum that I wouldn’t pay them a dime until they properly separate mountain and road cycling and am still holding strong.

  • Is there any push to revisit this?

  • I think this is what we need:  https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360023835812-MTB-Bike-as-a-default-bike-for-mountain-biking-activity-transferred-from-Garmin-Connect

According to Elle's comment in this thread, Strava *thinks* they are distinguishing between the two. However, when mountain biking activities are transferred over, there is an impedance mismatch between the services and it is lost. The result, we all still have to go into Strava to change the bike if our road bike is the default and we did a mountain biking activity. Sad.

  • Still hope to this feature, please Strava. I want to compare my times with bikes which are using an MTB, obviously i can't do it since there are many people with road bike. We need this one ASAP.

  • I've read through most of the comments, now that strava is essentially a paid vs nothing service can we please have this added?

I haven't seen anyone from product management on here articulate why this can't be added as an activity. The rational from past posts by support is a head scratcher... You have a distinction between skiing and snowboarding which relies on the same lifts, trails, and underlying technology for either piece of equipment.

I hope the difference between MTB and road in terms of skill set and effort per mile has been made sufficiently clear over the 8 years this thread has existed.

  • I’m just coming up to subscription renewal and won’t be doing it until MTB has its own categories and algorithms.

Why doesn’t any of the strava team post anything on here? It doesn’t feel good to be ignored. In fact it’s very arrogant of them!

  • Premium does not seem worth it as an mtber without a simpel mtb category.
